How should I feel?

Recommended Posts

4 man scramble

mulligan ticket

167 par 3

Second ball in the hole

Walking up to the green and not seeing the ball I was saying “don’t be in there.” But it was…

I don’t have a HIO, but what do I have and how should I feel about it because I have no idea.

When it happened... fist bumps all around and hope it helped you catch a flight.

Now ? Done, can't wait to tee it up next time with my buds. ; )

Actually, you played by the rules for that tournament.  Your second ball was completely within the rules set by the "committee" on that day. Sounds like a hole in one to me. The score on that hole was what? 1  There's no other way to get a 1 unless it's a hole in one.

People will argue either side till the cows come home.  How you view the shot and the outcome is totally up to you.

Well technically, no it is not a HIO as per the formal Rules. Course committees certainly can determine "local rules", but there are very clear limits (in the RoG) to what a committee can do. There is a great deal they cannot do. For instance, a committee couldn't just decide to say "if your ball is in the sand, you can drop outside the sand with no penalty" ... etc., etc. Someone here more knowledgeable than me can chime in if I'm wrong, but I do not think a local committee can permit mulligans.

That said, I've played in plenty of charity events where foursomes could "buy" mulligans (great for fundraising). It is a lot of fun. So then, according to the strict RoG no, you do not have a HIO. But for the purposes of that tourney you do - and (IMO) anytime, under any circumstances, that someone holes out they should feel absolutely great about themselves.

Man that sucks.  Agree not a HIO but a story that can annoy you for years to come!

It kind of will haunt you.  I had what should have been a HOI in the 1980's (my 1st) but someone earlier in the morning had snapped the flag pole and the fiberglass pole filled nearly the entire cup.  It couldn't go in.  It was more than a decade before I got one.  I still think about it nearly 40 yrs later.

Regardless of the HOI issue, I’m pretty sure you got the skin on that one, so I’d feel pretty good about that. 😉

Nope, no HIO.

My second one was in a scramble - no mulligan though (and no "prize" hole - just a league night).

My daughter was at HS golf practice many years ago and to save time on a par 3 she teed up outside the tee markers and . . . . holed it! She was ticked!

You've got a good story to feel good about.

Feel great about it, holing out a 167 yard shot is baller, no matter how you cut it. Guessing you made a MIO? or a Parigun? Either way, makes for a good story. And don't walk to the green saying "don't be in there", the whole point of the game is for it to "be in there". 😀

Where I'm from, we call it par.  😁

Cool shot, but this is one reason why I would never hit a 2nd shot on a par 3, or if for some reason I am, I don't hit it at the pin.  Hopefully you'll get your legit HIO soon!

Ever see those vids on Youtube where a pro gets 500 balls to get a HIO, then goes ballistic if one finally goes in?  If it's good enough for them, it's certainly good enough for you.  Given you weren't re-teeing because of a ball ob, then I'd say it's definitely a Hole-in-one.  But for the purpose of buying drinks, I'd claim it definitely wasn't.

It's one of those things that's all on you and you can look at it however you like. When playing in a scramble the only thing I would count would be a hole in one. That is of course if it was my first shot. That to me is still something that is an individual accomplishment in a team type of format. Anything else I might do in a scramble I don't consider it anything to brag about.

I played in a scramble where we used my drive on a par 4 and I holed from 190 from the fairway for an eagle. I haven't had too many eagles over the years. I don't consider this one an eagle even though it was my drive and my second shot that got us the eagle. Maybe I should question my thinking but that is how I feel about it. At most I have mentioned I holed out from 190 one time.

I think if you’d made six or seven before this one, it’d be no big deal to say oh I’ve made seven or eight now. But for your first one, I think it has to be legit. Also, if they demanded you pay for drinks and even a small part of you argued, then you have your answer.😀

I had to leave immediately after the round to get to work so no, I did not buy drinks, but I would have had I not had to go to work.

If it was one of those "string" rules where it's "in" if you hit it within the length of the string, and you jam it to 6" (inside the string), is that also a HIO?

Damn, you kids got soft winning  all those participation trophies. When I holed out with one swing on a par 3 it was playing a few extra holes after my league nite 9. Under the Rules of Golf at the time, HIO's only counted if scored during an 18 hole round. So no HIO for me. Was too dark to play another 17.

The rule that stated a HIO had to happen in a 18 hole round. That was around the time that the rules were if an amateur  player said they wanted to be a pro someday, they lost their amateur status by saying it. Tough crowd.
