Moving away from the ProV

I agree with your sentiment early.  There are lots of reason a person may not want to play 40-60 dollars per dozen balls.  Sure losing balls may be one of them, but it’s certainly not the only reason

Yeah losing balls isn't a huge factor. Average 2-3 per round. Its more that if I can get 90% performance of a ProV1 from a different ball that is half the price, why not?

I'm a 9.4hcp, so while better than average, I'm not good enough to notice that 10% loss of performance between a ProV1 and Vice Pro/Maxfli Tour. So factoring cost just makes sense (for me)

More money to spend then on hotdogs at the turn 😂 $30 savings $4 per hotdog 🟰 7.5 more hotdogs per box of balls. 5 boxes/yr ✖️ 7.5 hotdogs per box 🟰 37.5 hotdogs per year!

Maxfli Tours are the real deal. The price and the quality are unbeatable.

I agree. I think they’ve long been considered a second rate ball, but these are legit. I think it may take a while to shake the old reputation.

  • 4 weeks later...

I switched from the Pro V1X to the Srixon Z Star. As the OP mentioned price, it’s somewhat difficult to justify the Pro V1X price especially if you’re playing quite a lot.
In 2023, I had a lesson and we looked at just golf balls and how they performed.
I generally need more spin as I don’t produce the optimal RPM. We looked at the Pro V1, Pro V1X, TP5, TP5x, Z Star, Z Star Diamond, Chrome Tour and Chrome Soft.

The Z Star and the Pro V1X were the 2 best performing and were producing virtually identical numbers and the Chrome Soft was pretty close too.
I discarded the Chrome Soft because I didn’t like the mushy feeling from that ball when putting. The Z Star are better valuable, more durable and I never liked how quickly the Pro V1’s discolour. After a few holes, you can easily identify a Pro V1 from 20 yards or so yards away as it loses its “new” whiteness colour quite quickly. I have no such issues with the Z Star.

I've played maxflis for the past few years. I bought each a box of the Mizzy Pro S and X. I love the S more than the X and have been playing them for the past couple months.

I also bought a box of new ProV1xs this week, had a round monday afternoon where out a greenside bunker on the 5th hole the cover got shredded enough to take the ball out of play. Next hole, another greenside bunker, even more of a shredded cover. $10 on 2 holes is not worth it. Sure, miss the bunkers. 😉

I haven't had that happen with Maxflis or Mizuno Pros, or Snells.

A quick story:

Some years ago, I was playing a round of golf and picked up a proV1. I had never played one before, so I was happy to find it and put it in the bag.

After hacking it up for 11 holes, I decided it was time to try out this new baby. Absolutely destroyed the last eight holes! After I putted out on 18, I tossed the ball to my playing partner and I said "this will be my ball for the rest of my life."

He looked at it and said "they do not make this DT Wound 90 anymore."

I had reached into the bag and took what I thought was the proV1, but took an older Titleist by mistake.......

Interestingly, I now play the pro V1 as my regular ball, but I'm sure that any of the similar balls would just work fine for my game.

If it is only a cost thing, then buy 4a or 5a perfect/mint used ones (not refinished) and play the ball still.  I do this for non-peak season... about $1.50 a ball and perform just as well.

I use the buy 3 get 1 free deal for the new balls.

If you plan ahead a bit, there is no reason to pay retail for golf balls.

I also appreciate that Titleist makes balls in the US, but they are not the only ones.

Wilson Staff is excellent, but at that price and without any specials, it costs more than Pro V1.

I like the PXG Extreme balls - they made the Golf Digest Gold List and offer them for $27.99 per dozen.  They have a Tour Ball and an X version to compete with Pro V1 and Pro V1X at about 1/2 the price.  I play the regular Extreme ball and love it.  It feels good, spins good on the greens, and doesn't scuff too easily.  They're worth a shot if you can't justify spending $55 a dozen.

My HDCP fluctuates between 17 and 20, so a Pro V1 isn't going to help me that much and I've played AVX, which is a great ball but costs as much as a Pro V1.  For the money, the PXG Extreme is a no-brainer.

Honestly, I'm 100% in on PXG - I love their fitting system and customer service.  Plus, they have the Hero's Program for Military Veterans and First Responders.  Excellent discounts and top quality equipment.  I'm on my second set.  Here's my setup:

Don't laugh at me here, but I found a Bridgestone Tour B-XS Mindset ball on my local course and put it into play. I use the ball for 3 rounds before I hooking it OB. Once I used up the 12 to 15 dozen balls I have left, this will be my new ball of choice.

Having said that, I have been playing the TP5 for about 6 months, although I get better numbers with the TP5x.  I prefer the feel  of the TP5.

Before the TP5, I was playing the Vice Pro. I now play them when I need help with my alignment or I want a little more height on my ball flight...I still have 4 or 5 dozen

PXG balls are really good too. I received a dozen after a fitting, used them for 3 rounds and preformed really well with them. I have 3 sleeves left.

For the price of ProV1s, there isn't everything that warrants me playing them. There are too many companies out there that produce similar results for a fraction of the price in my opinion.

4A Quality off of lostgolfballs is my go to for casual rounds.

I’m considering coming back to pro v1 as I know I’ll get the same performance off every ball in a sleeve. Been playing tp5x for a year or so now and I get the odd ball that just reacts differently for some reason. Today I played a club comp, new ball, suddenly I was struggling and I’ve been playing well last few weeks. Switched to a tp5x I’ve used twice recently from a different sleeve and my usual game was back.

All I’ve done was change the ball, same brand and same dozen. I made no swing changes. I seem to find this with Taylormade balls, the odd one just doesn’t behave right.
