Lido Green Speeds

Can’t wait to get another crack at this course. However, I was watching some old Bobby Locke and Bobby Jones footage, heck even footage of Nicklaus holing out on 16 in 1975, and I can’t get over how slow green speeds were in the past. 
 

This gets me to my point: is the Lido playing true to its original state when the greens are so fast and firm? I can’t imagine even Bobby holding his 140 yd mashie (5-iron) on the current Lido greens…and low shots like that seem to be the bread and butter of iron play when courses like the original Lido were around.
 

Wondering what you all think and whether anyone’s heard talk of keeping Lido greens a bit scruffy. Would make an  unparalleled course even that much more of a time portal. 
 

PS if anyone can post this in a thread in Golf Club Atlas, I would be much appreciative.

Golfers these days would flip a gasket if they kept greens at the same level they did in the 70's.   From people I know who have been up to Sand Valley, they keep both Sand and Mammoth pretty firm and fast, I would expect Lido would not be any different.

so last year, Lido greens were not in the best shape but there wasn't much they could do ...

 

the winter had very little snow, if any, but had high winds and ice ... which caused a lot irregular growth patterns on the green

Course is very difficult to top dress or re seed section due to the high winds out there, so they are tough to fix if things go wrong

They where about an 11 last year

 

I agree with you take that some of the slops would be different if we were playing back in 1920s versus today in 2020s 

Holes that would play different

Hole 3 - would be able to hold the back of the green

Hole 5 - would be able to go at the green from the left side of the fairway with a wedge (only can do that now if its into the wind)

Hole 9 - similar to hole 5

Hole 16 - the run up would hold golf balls and instead of sending over the edge on the right

Hole 17 - easier to hold the green that slopes away from you

Hole 18 - green is pretty difficult to hold if the pin is in the back left or right

 

I don't think the course would play better though if the grass was the touch longer or if the greens were a touch slower

 

I played on closing last year and the greens were just scalped the afternoon before .. they were rolling at close to a 15 (not joking) and if a touch windy ... we played the championship tees at 7500 yards, it was one the toughest golf courses I have ever played

 

I do think Sedge would be better though If they had the fairways a little longer in height ... its already a short golf course, it would help people be more confident with their wedges into the green rather than the tight lies every where else. They could do a tee box cut, then a fairway cut, then a approach cut (3- to 50 yards in to run up shots) and then a green cut. I would be more interested in seeing this. 

 

If you have the right caddie at Lido though, you shouldn't be missing long more than once a round, unless you thin/blade a shot
