Jumbomax grips: distance loss?

NevinW

Recommended Posts

I put Jumbomax grips on my clubs and I now have about 5 rounds with them.  I really like them and am pleased overall.  I hit 14 greens today on a windy day.  However I seem to have lost about 3-4 mph club head speed and about 10-15 yards with the driver and about 1/2 club with the irons.  Anyone else have this experience?

Did your flight change?  I tried the ultralight XS model, I believe, for a driver a couple years ago.  I have big hands and I thought those were still pretty big.  It seemed like it would be easy to grip the club in your palm with those if you weren't paying attention to your grip.  I did not have the distance loss though....driver only.

if the grip is too large, you cannot release the club properly which slows it down. I have big hands - my palms are big, fingers are not overly long. I've been through seasons using all 3 sizes I'm fairly certain mid-size is right for me. I just installed MCC +4's mids on my clubs we'll see how it goes. I was using CP2's they are too heavy and spongy. Tour Velvet +4 is nice also, I like the reduced taper, some may not.

I just regripped my grandpa's clubs with JMX Ultralites to replace CP2 Pro Jumbos, similar diameter but a significant weight difference. He saw a 5-10% distance improvement with woods & irons. I wonder if your issue is with swing weight/counterbalance rather than actual grip size.

I switched to the JMX Ultralight XL's about 10 years ago and still playing them. At the time I switched I gained about 5 - 8 yards in distance and much better control. For what it's worth I hold the club in the palm of lead hand using an interlock grip.

Also I don't wear a glove, but if I did it would be a large.

Just tried the Ultra Lights about 2 weeks ago.  Went to the webpage for the e-fitting.  It suggested I go with the medium or large, I opted for the medium.  I put them all all of my clubs and will agree that the ball flight is higher.  Lost my baby draw, everything straight as an arrow.  I think slightly longer in distance but not sure I liked the feel with the irons.  Good results but it did not feel like the club was turning over.  I did leave it on the driver and 3 wood but took it off of the other clubs for now. I always hit the driver pretty decent but it seems so easy to hit solid and straight with the Jumbo Max on it.

I was shocked at how light they were. How is control with short wedge shots? I'm a lefty so I can't use my grandpa's clubs but I feel like I'd lose a lot of touch around the green

I would agree with this.    Depending on the JMX line (ultralites/tour/zen lite/etc) and of course the size, it could make a significant difference in not only swing weight but even might make the weight of the club significantly heavier or lighter.   For example the wrap series is pretty heavy.. the tour line isn't as much but much heavier than say the ultralites which are the lightest.    My point is that if you put on grips that are heavier than what you had before, making not only the club heavier, but making the head feel "ligher" (as in swing weight), it could be the reason.    On the other end of the equation if indeed the JMX grip you are using is lighter than what you had before, it would make the club lighter,... so potential for some speed gains there.. BUT.. it will make the head feel "heavier" given the balance point is closer to the head.   So, it might just take time.

My son and I have the same irons (head model and shaft brand model/length/stiffness).   He has tour velvet mids on his and I have JMX zen lite SJ on mine.   Mine are something like 6-8 grams lighter.  His swing weight is D1 mine is D5.

It can affect swing weight some but not as much as you might think. Weight on the grip end tricks the swingweight scale more than anything.

Not so sure I follow.  I mean, it’s just a measure of balance point, right?   Now, some people are more sensitive to that than others but not sure how a balance point measurement can be “tricked”.  Having said that I didn’t expect a 3-4 point swing weight move with a grip difference of 6-8g.

Fan of the Zen Lite grips here.  They feel like a regular grip, making the transition less dramatic.  I feel like the Ultralite gets too slick for my taste.  Jumbomax recommends a large or medium for me.  I have tried both the XL and large and did not experience distance loss.  The XL feels just a touch too big so I am sticking with the large.

Because the swingweight scale is based on a standard grip and the extra weight from a heavier grip will be in your hands versus being distributed throughout the club. I’m not saying it doesn’t change the feel but that’s just something you need to accept. If you go chasing a swingweight based on a heavier grip you will likely regret it.

I played them in my irons for a couple months.  Didn’t lose distance but lost a lot of shots right and made it really hard to hit a draw or hook my irons when stuck in trees.

I think two things happen with changes to Jumbomax.

As stated, if you go with anything other than Ultralites, you will probably experience effects of the heavier grip counterbalancing the head.

The other thing is the effect on impact created by placing the club more in the palms. If the grip is more in the palms the lies of the clubs should need an upright adjustment to compensate. The old "Natural Golf" rule of thumb (pun intended) to compensate for a new palm grip was to bend the clubs two degrees more upright.

For clarification, mine are the Ultralite small grips.  I've tried the mediums before, but I decided to go small this time, partly to ease getting them in and out of the bag.  All my clubs are 1 degree flat including the driver.  I'm happy with the quality of the strikes and the divots don't suggest lie problems.  The only problem is clubhead speed.

The ultralight Extra Large are the same weight as a standard grip , about 55g.

It's all I use. I saw distance gain when I changed to Jumbo Max ultralight XL years ago.  Much better face control and with lighter grip pressure.

This for sure and the same thing I experienced.

No issue at all, for me even better control of the wedges and green side chipping.
