New TaylorMade TP 5, TP5X

Did anyone else get the new TP5s or 5X to test from TaylorMade? Word on the street is that these are 1/2 club longer. I'll do a little testing and keep the group updated.

Really hope they didn’t change much. Last year’s TP5x is by far the best ball I’ve ever played.

Hopefully they have improved. The 2019 tp5x was a great ball. The last generation was not as good, I had to switch back to Titleist. Might have to give these a shot again.

The 2019 seems unanimously hated while the current model is fantastic for me and converted me from titleist. Funny how that works lol 

 

Edit I mixed up the 2019 with the prior generation. Forgot what year it was for a minute lol

I did order a bunch of current gen TP5X just in case I dont like the new ones. 

 

They promised 1/2 club longer last gen too, which would mean this gen would be full club longer than two generations ago?? 

 

The 2019 were either loved or hated, depending on preference in how firm or soft an X ball should be. I thought they were clicky and too hard, but some liked it for that reason.

Just got my 4 TP5 today. Will give them a try tomorrow on the SIM vs. current V1x, as looks like storms here in DFW.

Are you sure that these are a new ball?The box and the tp5x stamping are identical to the two dozen I picked up last September. The only difference is the new alignment aid and I haven’t seen TM shouting about a new ball anywhere.

Fair enough. Didn’t think a new ball was due until next year.

I found the email where I signed up to test the "new ball" after taking a survey. I'll see if I can find a difference between the current ball and the four they sent me. The survey let you choose whether to test the TP5 or the TP5x.  🤷‍♂️

Who knows??? It could be a fun little experiment to see if I can figure this out.

 

I like how Titleist does it with the plain white boxes.

 

I'm also glad we are past TM changing the ball's name every year, keeping in line with the TP/x line with minor changes each iteration.

Got my 4 pack last night and played them today. I play the Pro V1. These are great golf balls and I feel like, when I connected with them on my approach shots, they were a bit longer like others have said, maybe half a club. They feel really solid off all clubs and really popped off the driver for me as well. Greenside they were pretty similar to the Pro V1 for me. Good durability considering I hit a couple tree limbs and scurried across a couple cart paths. 
 

Curious to get a couple more rounds with them and be able to compare it side by side with my gamer, but first impressions were very good.

I think this is just testing the newest released version, which is current in the retail stores.  
 

normally the protos are plain sleeves.

Those have the same side seam marking as the 2024 version.  The USGA uses the markings on the ball as a way of keeping track of different versions.  Thus, I assume, it would be a big no-no for TM to change anything about the construction of the ball while keeping all of the markings the same as a previously approved version.  With that in mind I think it is safe to say this is the '24 version and TM is trying to drum up some interest by passing out these "new" trial packs.

This was my thought as the box is identical to my 2024 as is the side stamp. Think they’re just trying to get people interested in the new alignment aid.

 Exact marking box graphics are the same.

I'm almost positive it is the 2024 ball.
IMO the best TM Balls were the 2016 Tour Preferred X (Last ball before the gang left for snell) & The 2024 TP5x.

TM did not release a new ball as far as formula is concerned......only the new stripes.....

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask, but seems like we've got the TM ball experts here... Would you describe the TP5 as a cross between a Prov1x and Prov1?

 

I typically play a Prov1x and hit it a little too high, and maybe should switch to a Prov1 but it feels too soft to me and seems like I lose distance with it. I tried the TP5x before and got max distance out of it, but it went even higher and didn't have enough short game spin. Then recently I found a few TP5's and it seemed like a happy medium: prov1x feel, prov1 height, good distance, good short game spin... does that sound about right?

Roughly:

TP5 - softer and high spin

TP5x - firmer and mid spin

PV1 - softer and mid spin

PV1x - firmer and high spin

 

The independent testing I've seen shows the TP5 flying higher than the Prov1. TP5 has slightly lower compression than Prov1 as well, so I don't see it playing any shorter than the TP5. 

 

A lot of golf ball testing just has to be what you experience on the course. Compression and spin are easily quantifiable, but aerodynamics are pretty tough to gauge. I don't think it's something you can determine on an LM as well. Dimple pattern and structure have a non zero effect that goes beyond launch and spin rates. This is the reason I stopped playing DTC brands, no matter how 'cheap' they appear on paper. Outside of Snell, the DTC brands can make a ball that hits the right LM #'s, but on the course balloon into the wind like an old Balata. Long story short, use compression, spin, height as reported by the OEM's as a baseline, then use what gives you the best real results.

For my game, the tp5 feels like a higher spinning pro v1 whilst the tp5x is a lower spinning pro v1x. As someone that used to love the older pro v1x the tp5x was a seamless transition to me.

 

The only downside was the ‘23 pro v1/x models seemed to be more durable. Having tested the ‘25 pro v1 that advantage seems to have gone and the durability is now similar from my experience.

I'll need to try again the TP5 ......sounds like what I'm looking for .....more spin than v1; softer than v1x 

Any dealings with the new kids on the block? Vice pro,  mizuno pro or maxfli tour x ?
