Cobra 3DP Tour vs Titleist T150

I too have converted from 23’ T200/T150 to cobra limit3d (non limited release). I had both sets shafted with DG mid 115 x100.   Same grip same B&BF ferrule. I love my T150 but always felt the peak apex was higher than it should be. Especially with my ball of choice ProV1x. It made me second guess if I was getting “flipy” with my hands. I loved how the T150’s got through the turf, something the cobras can’t replicate. For being an iron modeled after a blade, the cobra has a thicker sole to the eye. However, the the insanely soft feeling, physics bending forgiveness (seriously, it’s really hard to not make these go straight), and it’s very piercing flight trajectory is what sealed the deal for me.

There's a big thread on here about measuring and comparing between the units. I wrote up a side by side with Trackman in the same bay showing some really consistent results:

 

On CHS, I do a lot of speed training including using my Garmin G80 with speed stack and would say the Garmin R50 has been very accurate.

 

Between measuring with my fitter on Trackman and/or GC Quad and training on my sim, I'd say the measurements have been pretty spot across the board on with the Garmin R50.

So I've hit both the T150s and 3DPs side by side enough now, they have the same shafts, swing weights, lies, lofts, etc -  the #s are there between both sets.

 

Its really close. To the point that if I had to choose, I'd stick with my T150s because I know them better and am more consistent. I think we've found both sets are great and established that the 3DP heads are very forgiving, perhaps even moreso than the T150s.

 

To dive a little deeper, I think I'm going to head a different direction now and change my approach with the 3DPs into experimental mode. Got a few ideas for how I can maximize this set and will share more soon.

Coming from the T150’s myself, I think the forgiveness is almost incomparable. The distance on mishits with the 3DP is only marginally shorter where the T150 loses a fair distance. I’d also say the spin rates are more consistent on the 3DP’s. I’d actually compare the forgiveness on the 3DP with the T200 utilities. It’s only really high face hits that the 3DP (and almost every other iron) loses substantial amounts of distance.

No disagreement at all.

 

My AoA at 7 iron is about -4 and gradually more flat in the longer irons.

 

Forgiveness:

Heel strikes: T150

Toe strikes: 3DP

Thin: 3DP

Fat: T150

 

My thought process is that I’m striking the T150s super consistent at the moment so I don’t see a need to change.

 

Ironically my miss is thin/toe which might be completely counter intuitive to the above.

 

I hit the 3DPs really well too but don't yet see as many flush strikes compared to the Titleist. Thats what I'm going to try and dial in with the Cobras. I’m going to game the 3DPs a bit more and test that, especially to see if the above holds true and if it translates to more GIR or at least not putting myself occasionally out of position with my irons.

 

I think there’s a lot to this and I don’t think it’s an overstatement that the 3DP heads from a development standpoint might be some of the most innovative/best I’ve ever seen.

Not paint, black oxide (cold/hot bluing) process with Caswell's Stainless Steel solutions. 

 

Took a lot of prep and work to get right.

Just finished putting em back together.

 

Going to experiment with a much lighter but stable graphite shaft and see what that does. Might not last, just had these around and figured it might be worth giving a shot. A buddy of mine had this shaft set and wanted to try the heads out so might as well - may not last long.

 

Paint Fill: Tester's Copper Metallic

Ferrules: BB&F randoms. For some reason I can't stand matching $&#@

Shafts: LAGP A-Series Mid 85-4 (Pured)

Grips: GP Tour Velvet 360s (Black)

SW: D2-D3

Basic removal process. They will turn a goldish hue afterwards.

 

• White vinegar for 20m
• Distilled water with baking soda.
• Muriatic acid (use PPE) for 5-10m.
• Distilled water with baking soda.
• Wash clean.

If you're doing a thorough finish removal, the paint will come off.

 

I removed the paint fill with paint stripper. Removed the anti-corrosion coating with the process above.

Testing over - the 3DPs have been a great new home.

 

The reason for the lighter LA Golf shafts was to customize these around one of my best friends. I had all his measurements and a pretty good idea of what would work for him. He has an I/O delivery, slower swing speed (75mph 7 iron) and needed help getting the ball in the air, more spin, and more consistency.

 

This set checked all of the boxes and basically fit hit to a T. I had the clubs bent to match his specs (closer to standard lie at 1* upright and 1* flat). 

 

He hit them for the first time in the morning, won his match that afternoon. Loved em.

Couple of notes:

• The black oxide increased spin tremendously throughout the set (500 rpm+)
• Lighter shafts on these low CG heads works wonders. 
• I don't know what Cobra we're thinking marrying these to KBS $ Tapers stock. Low all the things.
• A lot players might benefit from lower shaft weight and lower total weight.

My buddy added 3-4 mph per club, gained a number of yards per club, and is striking the ball now better than ever.

• SS Blackener 370
• Sealer 

 

Have you done bluing/chroming/etc before?

Nope but I just bought the kit from Caswell's. Any tips would be appreciated!

My buddy that I built the Cobra 3DPs for and I finally got our first round out together at Chambers Bay.

 

We both shot our personal bests. The 3DPs have helped him gain yardage, get more spin, and hit the ball higher as he's a lower swing/spin player.

 

The test worked and we're both happy 🙂
