Which wedges? Lefties

ZAP

Recommended Posts

Currently I am playing Cobra wedges but I am getting the itch to try something new.  For reference I play Srixon ZXi irons 5/7 combo.  Project X 6.5 shafts.  4-AW.

As a lefty I have trie the Cleveland wedges which would seem like a good match up but I just didnt like them for some reason.

What are my fellow lefties playing and why do you like them?   Most places have demo wedges but hitting in the simulator does not always tell the story fully.

Just looking for ideas.

Haywood Signature, and PXG Sugar Daddy's. But for some reason I have really been liking my fake Miura's. Maybe it's because they are black and look good with my black irons. 🤣

Maybe it's because they were $60 each.

Haywood 1 with Fake Ventus Black 6S

Haywood 3W

Haywood 18* driving iron

Vato Skull MB irons 4-PW

KBS PGI 80g iron shafts

Mirua 51/10 and 55/12 wedges

Haywood mid mallet putter

Golf Pride Concept Helix grips

I wish I knew. Modern wedges are quite bad. Just got my Vokey finetuned with 15 grams of weight added inside the S400 shaft and 13 layers of lead tape added to the clubhead. The overall weight of the club is still too low, even though it reached the desired E8 swing weight. Really hard to use on short shots as the club does not penetrate grass bumps well.

Would prefer a sharp leading edge and a much heavier club head. Don’t think that any brand makes such wedges anymore. Also hard to find older leftie models in ok shape.

I like the SM10 Vokeys.  I just bought a 60* with an M sole and love it.  It spins great and feels great as well.

Finally wore thru 3 sets of SM 5 so new wedges for me in 2025 since those 5s came out.

Opus Platinum 54 s bent to 53 - modus 115w

Opus w or SM 10d 58 bent to 57 - modus 115w or modus 125r

Sm10 60t bent to 61.5 - s200

The 53 and 61.5 are firmly in the bag. Love them .  Still working thru the 57. I'm a sweeper and shallow so lower bounce works better for me it seems. That t grind around the green is nothing short of amazing. The S works for longer pitches and anything out to 85yds for those smooth 3/4 lower flt high spin shots.

I've been trying everything and anything really. Started the process last August lol. Very picky about my wedges.

AI Smoke Max 9* - Ventus Blue+ 2024 6s // Elyte Ti 3w - Atmos Blue TS 7s // Mizuno HMP 4i - Modus 115s // Srixon 565/765 Combo 5-PW - Project X 5.5 // HMP 50 - Modus 115s // SM 10 D 53 (wedgeworks smooth grind) - SM 200 // SM10 S 57 (wedgeworks smooth grind) - S200 // SM10 T 61 - S200 // Odyssey Microhinge 2025 // 2024 TP5

Vokey and Ping have the most lefty options. If you're into a more basic grind/bounce that opens up to pretty much every other brands.

I currently use SM9s which I'm happy with, when these wear out I'll do a fitting but kinda leaning to Ping for their wet performance.

The new Ping wedges are really good, and everything is available in left hand. Even typical non-Ping guys seem to like these wedges. Could be worth a look.

Second this.  S159 is a shockingly good wedge.  I just recently picked up a 50/54/58 S grind after a full bag Ping fitting and could not be happier.  The S grind may be the best all-purpose wedge I have ever used.  Very friendly bounce on fuller shots and when needed around the greens, but also easy to open up and very playable out of bunkers.  Highly recommend this one.

Currently in the bag are a 50 degree Mizuno T-1 (flows nicely w/ my S-3 irons, 5-PW), a 56 degree PXG SDIII and a Bettinardi 60 degree C Grind. Liking the set up this year. I have been playing Vokey's for most of the past 25 years, but never really loved any of their wedges. I think their retail versions are playable, but not awe inspiring.

I was in between the SM10 and S159 and chose the Vokey because I've played them so long. Wondering if I should have went PING. Only reason being I think the extra grooves in PING wedges probably means that they probably maintain their spin rates better after the face milling gets worn. Biggest pet peeve of wedges is that even though visually they may look to be in great condition, the launch/spin deteriorates pretty quickly within the 1st year of play.

I just didnt care for the Ping look at address.  Now, having said that I fully disclose all of their stuff look off to me from D down to wedge.  Im not sure what it is TBH.  I know their stuff is good - heck, I loved my i25 driver with those stupid race stripes.  The G25 hybrid and FWY were awesome.  But other than that I just cant get past the look.  The 159 wedge looks off to me - I dont like the leading edge at all.  Maybe I will actually hit one and see....

Vokey for me. I really liked my Ping i159 wedges but i was used to the swing weight of the vokeys... after adding lead tape i kept hitting on the toe too frequently and moved back to the vokey. Out of the rough or wet conditions i prefer the pings though. Another dorky irritation is that that ping has more and smaller grooves, depending on the size of your tee it doesnt fit between to clean.

I’m usually pretty picky about rounded leading edges but haven’t noticed it on the Ping.  Also never looked at a better set of irons than my Blueprint S.  Guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Yes, I’m sure your club-builder didn’t immediately roll their eyes on your weight request.

Hideki and Scottie do just fine with their D swing weight wedges.

Modern golf is what it is. Just because the current pros do something does not mean that the legends were wrong. The club builder understood it. After all, players like Hogan had such specs.

The overall weight is much more important than swing weight. It’s really hard to get the total weight up while maintaining a desired swing weight.

I bought a ZXi7/ZXi5 combo and went for the RTZ in the wedges. Took me three range sessions to get used to them (specifically the leading edge), but I’m def becoming a believer.

In general, the answer to all questions for lefties is Ping or Titleist. I went Cleveland only so I could get axiom shafts without a v expensive custom order, and I don’t love vokey sand wedge grinds. There is something to be said of the consistency you get year over year with them though.

No, ordered through wedge works with hand ground options. What's silly is the K* grind which is trailing edge, heel relief and pre-worn leading edge isn't available in lefty, but you can modify a regular low bounce K in wedge works for an additional $75.

You able to load up a picture of the wedge?  Im intrigued.  I thought Vokey had a hand ground option, but my rudimentary internet skills have me unable to locate it.  EDIT:  Found it.

What added grinds did you do to the K?  Each add-on is $75.

You get 2 hand ground choices for $75. I don't have a picture yet, wedge is in route will be here later this week/early next. I chose heel relief and trailing edge relief. I wanted the club to lay flatter when opening the face, the wide sole of the k grind feels bulky on the ground when opening the face. $300 is tough to swallow for a wedge (raw finish) Luckily I have a lot of book money at my club so, I optioned everything I wanted.
