Scheffler’s Caddy Bucket Hat

Recommended Posts

A word of caution here.

The purpose of any wide brim is sun protection, and if a wide brim doesn’t advertise as SPF/UPF 50+, then it either isn’t, or the company didn’t want to spend the money to have the hat rated.

In this particular case, I wore that hat for a couple of summers and loved it.  But I ended up having multiple treatments for precancerous spots on my scalp, and was told that I was lucky to avoid MOHS.

Since then, I’ve ONLY worn SPF 50+ wide brims, and I’ve had no repeat of the scalp issues.  Make of that what you will.

You wore the wide brim or the smaller version?

You do know that the precancerous spots that people have today were from sun exposure years ago(10 years or more).

This is true for some common types of precancerous spots, but not all.  And even for the ones that take decades to show up, the progression accelerates when they become cancerous.

There is NO upside to wearing a wide brim hat that is NOT SPF rated vs one that is SPF rated, since the clock on skin cancer is always ticking.  There are plenty of really good wide brim SPF options.

I started wearing wide brim hats last year to help with potential sun damage and I guess I just assumed all would be relatively the same as long as it shaded my face and neck. I agree with you that if I'm purchasing one I'd like to know that it is protecting me as much as possible. I will be going shopping for new hats that are SPF rated. Thanks for the heads up.

Take a look at Shelta hats. I found about them a few years ago (from someone on this forum, actually) and they are amazing. All hats are UPF 50+, comfortable, and easy to throw in the wash, if needed.

Nike Apex? https://www.nike.com/t/apex-dri-fit-bucket-hat-q8DmMg/HJ7158-100

I have one in black and like it.

edit: they have a smaller brim version as well also called apex

I did some searching after this post. I believe it is the Nike Core. If anyone has one, what is the ventilation like? It looks good but gives me some pause since it is twill.

Agree, but everyone should still use sunscreen when using a rated or non rated wide brim hat.
