Modus 120 S weight after trimming?

Recommended Posts

So I'm considering Axiom shafts as a replacement for my Nippon Modus 120 S in my Titleist T-150/T-200 combo set. I'm wondering about the difference in weight and I can't find good info on what weight the Modus would be after trimming for "standard" length irons. I know they are 114g untrimmed but how much would that get reduced?

The Axiom 105 might be the closest match for me, but I'm curious just how much lighter they would be vs the Modus. Higher shaft weight has typically helped me find the face a little more reliably, so I don't want to go too light. On the other hand I'm starting to have recurring back issues that I'm hoping the Axiom might help alleviate a little...

Someone smarter than I will surely come along with the correct answer, but I believe the 114gr is based off a 39" 3 iron shaft which works out to 2.9grams per inch. So take the shaft length×gram per inch to determine cut weight.

Thank you! That should get me close enough for a fair comparison.

Comparing the uncut weights is really just as effective as comparing the cut weights.   The axiom's are only a half inch longer for the uncut lengths than the Modus - but that's only a gram or two difference.  Not enough to worry about.

The Modus 120 S are at 114 gm  - so  they are almost exactly in the middle between the Axiom 105's and 125's.   So it's not a question of which is closest - it's more a question as to whether it's best for you to adjust lower in weight or higher in weight.    That's the question you have to ask your self - it's not something anyone here can answer for you.

But then the fact that the 125's are only available in X flex might make the decision easier to go with the 105's.

I have both shafts in irons at home and just from my own experiences:

the Modus 120s is comming in long raw length 38.5" or 39" for the 6i and are surprisignly light in cut length.

And to mention this also, the Modus 120s is from feel a full flex softer than the AXIOM 105s

from my set:

standard Srixon length 6 iron Modus 120s is 106gramm (!)

fun fact: Nippon NS Pro 1050 GH in 6i standard length 106g

Axiom 105s 4i shaft after cut to 6i length 99g (because of the stiffness of the AXIOM I did order the 4i AXIOM for my 6i and so I have to cut more material and it is soft step 2x)

with the AXIOM I tend to hit the mid irons a bit thin, I may need to play around with the swing weight a bit.

Thanks Stuart. The comparison I was making was vs the pre-cut tapered versions. Fujikura shares the specs on their site:

https://fujikuragolf.com/irons/axiom/#specs

Those range from 102.5g to 103.5g from W to 6, which seems like it will not be much lighter than the trimmed Modus 120 S. I have played the Modus 105 in the past but found them too light so I switched back to the 120. The Axiom 105s might be close enough that I don't notice much difference. Obviously I still need to go test, but now I have less concern about the 105 weights.

Thanks so much for this. I would never have guessed a 106g weight on the 6 iron! Happily that means my existing setup is much closer to the Axiom 105 than I expected. Very interesting too about the flex comparison. I have always loved the Modus 120 due to how it feels as it loads. I think a mid bend point just suits my timing. Do you think the Axiom 105 S feels similar, just a little stiffer?

Yes, I saw the specs.   You'd still be dropping about 11-12 gm.   For some that might be significant - for other's it might be no problem.  You just never know until it's time to test.       When uncertain, it's always best (safest on the wallet) to get a single shaft and test it out before committing to buying a complete set of shafts.

No, not at all, the Axiom is different, I would not discribe the feeling as bad or boardy, but far away from the smoothness of a Modus 120s. And if you do not soft step the Axiom the stiffness difference will be terrific.
If I load the Modus shaft a bit to quick, the results are ugly. The same thing with the Axiom and the results are absolutely ok.
