Callaway Ai 150 irons vs Ai 200

Had a chance ot hit them yesterday side by side with the Ai 200.  Same iron in a much smaller package with slightly more loft per iron.  With a seven iron, i generated simlar spin and descent angle and about 5 yard less yardage with the 150 compared to the 200.

If you like a smaller head and that's what is preventing you from trying these hollow body irons, the 150 may work for you.  That said, I had similar numbers except for distance increase of about 5 yards with the Ai 200, so I am leaning toward that model.  Also, I tend to start the ball left more with the Ai150.  Could be because the shaft was heavier by about 10 grams in the 150.  Not sure...

The Callaway fitter was trying to convince me to wait for the 150's to come out before deciding.  Said will be 4 to 6 weeks.  It will be a test of my maturity, lol.

Was the apex 150 the same size as the apex pro? I wanted to game the apex pro, but it was just too big

Any fresh updates? How are they in terms of consistency on distance?

Definitely a bit less drop off in distance compared to my T100S on slight mishits and haven’t had anything “hot” that has flown an extra 1/2 club.

I am definitely looking forward to getting some more rounds in, pretty happy so far.

The pro is discounted so it sounds like a cleanup on the line. Apex Pro=Ai150.

That makes sense because when I see the Apex Pro and Ai200 side by side, they look so similar. Wonder what the difference is. So I would expect the Ai150 has to look sleeker than the Apex Pro. Lots of mixed reviews on the Pro.

i am sure the Ai150 will look good. This series is attractive IMO, nice looking heads. But I really like the proportions on the Ai200. Blade length is in my ideal range, the soles are nice and I like how it looks from address.

Any reviews out there on how well these stop? I hit the Ai200 7 iron again on an indoor sim and at stock loft I was getting 4800 spin. Granted, I was purposely hitting draws and that cuts spin. When I hit fades it jumped to 5500. Descent angle was 46 degrees, so good on that. Swings were at 84 mph, shaft was DG Mid 115 s300.

I would likely go with Project X shafts and order these 1 or 2 degrees weak if I get them, but I would love any reviews on how well these are stopping on greens in play. I do enjoy the feel of these irons and the easy distance.

Is there still an embargo on info for the Ai 150? would just like to know if it has a pre worn leading edge?. Kind of holding out to see them before jumping around to JDM

I will say that for me, I’ve always had a bit too much spin and very little roll out in previous iron sets. According to my fitting that landed me in AI200, my flight and spin are now more optimal.

So they do roll out more for me, but that was a good thing and definitely not to the point of being an issue. Just adjusting to them.

The Apex Pros are a very unique club. Traditional lofts but a forged hollow body. It's one of the only clubs I can think of that combines the Player's Distance and Player's Performance categories like this.

Are they going to keep traditional lofts with the Ai 150? or Will they match the Ai 200 to aim for combo sets?

I received the Ai150 from my Callaway Rep yesterday. They are I pure. I currently play the Apex Pro. Club profiles are similar with the Ai150 having slightly less offset. The Ai150 is 2 degrees stronger per club except 4i. Pro and Ai 4i have the same loft. The shafts are being swapped from the stock DG 115 for DG 120 S300. That said, prior to swap change I waa getting 10-12 yards more carry per club and about 4 mph more ball speed in side by side comparison to the Apex Pro. I don't think you can go wrong even with the Ai200 but for better players the smaller profile of the Ai150 will be more desirable.

That would put lofts in line with ai200 in a smaller package. I believe apex pro did not have cup face from 6 iron through wedges. Wonder if this holds true with ai150.

How is the AI 150 offset compared to the AI 200?

Liked the overall look of the AI 200 but it had more offset than what I recall in the older versions of the standard Apex so I passed. Maybe the 150 would be a better option.

No that anyone cares but I still think the Apex '16 was the best combination of head shape/offset of these modern Apex lineup. Hit some of the best long and mid irons of my life with that set. But they did have the occasional low spin rocket that would leave me scratching my head on how I missed my yardage by 15 yards with a 7 iron??

We’re all waiting to see the ai150. Supposed to be sleeker than the ai200 but similar. Also supposed to have less offset.

The offset on the ai200 is similar to Srixons. Ai200 has less offset than Zxi5 and slightly more than Zxi7.

It’s right in my wheelhouse. Modest to medium offset. Irons with no offset are a no go for me. They look weird and are harder to launch, especially in the long irons.

Demoed Ai200 and Ai150 today. 150 a bit softer and a few meters shorter than 200, but felt brilliant. Fitter said loft is 1* weaker compared to 200.
now just wait for titleist demo next week before deciding.
150 should be a direct competitor to T150 according to him.

Very interested to see the ai150. The ai200 5 iron is so easy to play it feels like you’re swinging a 9 iron. Only thing I did not like is unnecessarily strong lofts. Order those in long irons 1-2 degrees weak to blend with the ai150 and that could be quite a set.

Agreed on the looks of the AI200.  Now if Callaway can only cut their iron lengths to spec we might be in business.  Every time I have ever ordered Callaway irons and had them spec'd out by a club maker/builder they are always off, and I mean always!  Lofts and lies are one thing (this can usually be fixed), but the club lengths are always suspect to say the least....really pathetic to be honest.

I don't know the ins and outs of Callaway's Apex series, but to me, the Ai150 and Ai200 looked really similar, maybe a few millimeters shorter blade length and thinner top line on the Ai150. Unless I had them side by side, I would not tell the difference either on face or back.

Watching this closely as well.  As a current Apex Pro 23 player - lots of the comments above about what the Apex 150 are sound to be exactly what the Pro is (seems loft may be a degree stronger).  Seems like we should know more tomorrow.

I believe it is meant to replace the Apex Pro. The one improvement I expect is that they’ve made changes to improve performance on thin strikes. In some reviews (Ask Golf Nut is one) the Pro does not test as well as some others on low mishits. I don’t know as I haven’t played it extensively. I have hit shots with the Pro and didn’t notice that. And I can hit it thin with the best of them!

That has been a knock on hollow irons in general, I guess a tradeoff for all the effort to improve mishits across the face and increase perimeter weighting. But they’re all getting better. TM p770 is excellent on thin hits and so is the ai200. The ai200 has outstanding forgiveness. It’s a little chunky to some but man, it feels really nice at impact, beats the 770 and 790 on feel IMO. I am a fan of the adjustable weight on the back.

So I think Callaway is happy with how the ai200 is doing with golfers and the ai150 is just a smaller version. If they’ve streamlined it and it’s just as easy to hit, it will attract a lot of interest.

I am all in to see the changes.  As a player of the 21 and 23 Pro - I have played some great golf with both sets.  The 21 feel wasn't great, but a long blade length with thin top line produced and looked great by the ball.  Took some time to get used to the 23, but the 4 and 5 iron with the cup face are absolute weapons and despite a thicker top line - the feel is better and my handicap is showing the results.  I am somewhat enamored with a 4,5 in the 23 Pro and 6-W in the new Xforged - but I am wondering if that would make the game tougher than it needs to be?

I wonder the same thing. The X Forged are very pretty but they’re also a 1020 carbon steel forged iron with a sharp leading edge. They call it a tri-sole but it looks like a turf-carving leading edge. No tungsten in the toe, a simple forged iron. It’s a cavity back but it’s still a shotmakers club. In theory, I love it. In reality, it is very likely to be less forgiving than Apex TCB and even clubs like the TaylorMade P7CB, which has the ceramic in the head to save weight for tungsten in the low toe. It will certainly be less forgiving than the ai150. Now, does that matter in the short irons? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the player.

I’m putting together a second set but the New Level 702CB+ I am playing meet my forgiveness needs: a mid-sized face and thin top line with a fairly low CG, a tungsten plug in the low toe and a beveled leading edge. Better than a v-sole for me.

The NLs have proven worthy on the course and they feel sweet. I do like the feel of a 1020 forged iron. That’s what makes the X Forged tempting. Don’t know if I want less forgiving than what I have. I was pondering an ai200/150 combo, an ai200 or 150 in a combo with the TCB or a straight set of ai150s. It’s hard to know. I do think the ai200 has gotten slept on, they are really good irons. Only change is I would go 1 or possibly 2 degrees weak in the 200. They’ll still go plenty far. iMO, they are more forgiving than the p770 and I have played both. It’s almost hard to miss them. They deliver with any decent strike. How the ai150 compares is what I want to see.
