Please accept that to some people these things matter. To be honest you’re likely in the minority here. The fact that someone from the design school from the 90s at ping could be costing them a lot of money is troubling.

I do.  It is just marketing, and people were vigorously complaining about the Mizuno font a couple releases ago.  OEMs also have design themes that align with their product launches.  A font or badge is not going to make or break Ping. 

 

The argument that they are going to lose money with this release is laughable.  The few new Ping converts who recently bought 210s or 230s going to a different iron because of aesthetics are not going to cause sales to tank.  I am sure Ping will gladly sell these irons to someone else if you or others don't like it. 

 

What is wrong with more options for consumers?  Don't like the look of something, look elsewhere.  Variety is the spice of life, and not everyone wants a monotonous club design.  Very Camry-esque and boring to have the same looking club, right? 

 

What vehicle do you drive by the way?  The 240s are looking more like a Porsche.  Not everyone's cup of tea, yet people like them and they perform (plus carbon fiber).

These irons will be around for at least 2 years. Honestly, probably longer looking at the i2xx lineup. It needs to be way more timeless.

The G440/i240 combo make me think that Ping have handed the design reins over to some testosterone addled teenager whose ideal car is a 90's McClaren F1...

 

 

I was hoping these would be performance-enhanced i230s with the look of the Blueprint S, but the carbon fibre/red accent isn't doing it for me...

 

I'll likely give them a hit at some point this summer, but unless the performance is night and day I don't think I'll be upgrading my i230s. I tend to get a lot of stopping power with the i230s, so the new grooves are the biggest cause for concern - I don't want to lose that from the fairway or rough, and I've also always found the i230s pretty forgiving on thin shots.

Some of the complainers will buy too.      

 

 I could be one of them if they perform.   For example I still play a G400LST.   When it came out, I'd acclimated to turbulators, but I did not like the dragonfly stuff on the crown and wondered why that had to be exposed and the structure couldn't be internal.   

 

But I couldn't ignore the way the club performs, and that nothing I tried has been able to unseat it.  I stopped noticing those ribs a long time ago.

Oh yeah, this is me. I think they're really ugly. I very much wish they'd gone with something cleaner looking, and would accept a performance tradeoff in order to achieve those looks. But I'm definitely gonna buy them anyway. There's just nothing else on the market *quite* like the Ping i2XX series.

Because some of us are fans of Ping and want them to do better. Didn’t say Ping will lose money on the release in general but the design team is costing them money in that they should have sold more. These clubs will be very functional clubs that perform well.

I suspect that's what might be lost here.   Most of the comments aren't coming from Ping haters.   It's people anxiously awaiting the next i2xx and ready to sign on if the current aesthetic was preserved/enhance, especially after seeing i530, blueprint S, and even g440.

 

I think the lesson to be learned might be that if you're going to make a departure, lift the tech story NDA (or at least a few hints) at the same time you do it on the pics.

This 100%, most of my bag is ping I was really waiting on the next gen i series…

As an admitted Ping apologist, I don’t get this.  The badge is adding maybe some acoustic elements at best, so this was just intentional and not really any more functional than any other design treatment they would add to that little piece of plastic.  This is an absolute weird and wild miss for the intended audience (golfer) who’s in the market for these types of irons.  I get it, grey and silver puts you in a crowd but this isn’t the way to stand out in a market where the target is so aesthetically triggered.  Odd, and just bad, this isn’t the typical, getting used to and later liking, it is awful and puzzling.

I'd take my iE1 back in a minute.  The i210 were a weird set for me.  I bought the modus 105 S.  But after a bad illness I needed a softer shaft.  Made a bad reshaft choice with KBS.  Short story, I never fell in love with the i210.  I'm in the i230 now at the end of their run with a modus 105 R.  Swingweight is DO to D1 and overall they are lighter and easier to hit.  So far they are promising.  I could see the i240 in my bag, maybe a swap of both i210 and i230 to get a set. It depends on the shaft offering and if they are better.  I like the carbon.  I think they look sharp.

Any idea when we'll start to see reviews drop? If these are slated for late June I'm guessing the next couple of weeks?
