RIP Lamkin OG Grips

To the bolded….which really bites because a SS support online told me the new Crossline/REVL was just +2. At that I was thinking I could just stretch a bit and it would feel like my current +1 wrap.  I stashed enough for a couple sets of irons but will begin the search of a new favorite.

After seeing the new SuperStroke grips today and the changes, I’m very disappointed in the options.

I’ll be switching to the Tour Velvet Cords at some point in the future when it’s time for new grips. I don’t like it near as much as the Crossline Cords, but it’s not as harsh as the Z Cords.

Stopped at a local GG today and they had all of the new line in at least one color minus the Crossline 2.0 cord. Here are my impressions:

Crossline 2.0 - the standard size felt similar to the cobra arcos crossline 360 with slightly less taper in the lower half, but also felt like the upper half was a bit thinner. The reduced taper in the lower hand was very noticeable on the midsize and jumbo. Very strange decision to go +4 with this one but none of the others (+2 would have been a better choice). Overall a step backwards from the classic crossline IMHO.

REVL Player - very similar to the UT+ but with a rougher texture (which is welcome). This one felt the best out of the new offerings to me.

REVL Element - upper hand was similar to the UTX, lower hand felt a bit undersized and walls at the opening looked thin. Wouldn’t be surprised if this one flopped.

REVL Comfort - less tacky and different texture than the sonar wrap (but similar size). I am not a wrap fan so I am probably not the best judge, but sonar wrap users will likely be fine with these.

I just tried to order my new irons with the Sonar + and was told it was unavailable

Went with the Sonar wrap

I read that the next generation of Lamkin family did not want to continue to run the family business and they sold out to SuperStroke

That is a real bummer because the Sonar + were the best grips I have ever used

The grips have lasted for 3 years and I play in the heat and humidity of the south

I am in total agreement with everyone that SS should just slap their logo on the Lamkin grips and leave everything else alone

Don't take this the wrong way, but a few weeks of inventory shortages are really meaningless by itself as any predictor of long term availability, especially with the current state of import economic instability.    I'm not saying it's not true, just that there could be a lot of other reasons.   Is there any other source of corroboration for your concerns or long term predictions?    Official news releases from Lamkin or SS, insider leaks, etc.. ?

Seems like others have answered but I have 100% confirmed prior lamkin accounts cannot order new grips from the old catalogue. Even Golfworks has stated this and they are likely the largest US distributor.

Lamkin is done. Retailers can't order them anymore. Distributors have told accounts they can't order them anymore and all SKUs were discontinued. It's been that way for at least the last 3 months. (source: I work in the industry)

Thanks for confirming with direct industry knowledge.

what a way to celebrate 100 years of lamkin grips.. lol!

Got to see the Crossline 2.0 in person today. It's soft. Softer than the Tour Velvet and the OG Crossline. Tack is there. The +4 taper is definitely pronounced. People who don't like the reduced taper are definitely going to prefer the REVL Player instead.

The SuperStroke logo is also on one side only, so logo down users rejoice.

Agree with these sentiments. To me they feel a lot like the crossline plus grips which are/were a Golfworks exclusive. Softer compound and reduced taper from an OG crossline

The UTX non-cord felt pretty good. The element which is a competitor to the golf pride MCC felt good. The crossline felt cheap soft and terrible.

That might be the case but I like the tackiness and firm cord feel of the UTX Cord.  Not a fan of the MCC (or any attempted clone) because to me the bottom hand feels squishy.

Regardless I think the Superstroke logo and cap looks cheap and will never even give these new grips a shot.  UTX Cord, Crossline Cord were amazing grips and can't fathom why they would even mess with those models much less discontinue those grips.

Like I mentioned before, stocking up on "legacy" Lamkin UTX Cord Grey grips and will take my business to Golf Pride when my back stock is exhausted.

yeah, it’s a shame. There’s really nothing for the people who like a firm cord in the new line. Also, I agree the branding is atrocious. I don’t understand why they couldn’t have had a normal group cap and just a super stroke logo instead of the full script.

I’m gonna try a couple of the UTX non-cord but gonna put them on upside down.

My guess is they are streamlining the line to cut costs, gonna use cost savings to pay some tour players and the new branding is to capture eyes on TV.

lol this will be remembered as a classic example of "don't reinvent the wheel." Don't change the design...just take the Lamkin name off it and put SuperStroke...

Should have never even changed the Lamkin cursive logo.  It was a classic, like the Titleist cursive

This is good to know because the UT+ is my jam. I figured this out just in time to have Lamkin bite the dust. 😐

I'm sure given they use old Lamkin materials some of the grips will be fine but not sure they could have made a more confusing line-up if they had intentionally tried. It's as if they've tried to streamline but cover all the bases at the same time and in doing so messed them all up. Mixing materials, tapers and cord/non cord with no obvious progression of naming, colouring or style. They've even used different materials for the two crossline grips .....why do they have the same name then?!

The UTX style non cord grip will likely be decent, but to do it without cord given how successfully the UTX cord has been seems like madness and the wrap one will likely be a solid alternative to the Golf Pride options. The MCC style one might actually be better than the GP MCC (can't for the life of me understand why people use this other than the colour options, feels cheap and wears out so fast to me) but Superstroke will have zero chance of toppling it given the marketing the MCC has had over the years.

Don't get me started on the grips caps...... big and ugly.

I also saw the new grips except for the 2.0 cord. The crossline 2.0(no cord) is a standard taper and feels great. The crossline 2.0 cord is a standard+4 and looking to be the the only option for that cord model, which is odd. The player is a half cord the also looks and feels alright.

The player is also another good feeling grip I could probably play. The genesis material lamkin is really good stuff imo. I currently use the genesis cords now which have been the best cord grip I've ever tried. Thankfully all logos can be flipped around for a clean look.

SuperStroke could have just killed off everything and took the patents, materials to rebuild their own grips. Glad their continuing the brand at all to be honest.

The non-cord Crossline 2.0 is a +4 reduced taper design as well. Big step backwards IMHO.

As for the bolded statement, this is basically what they did minus a token Lamkin on the butt (which I am sure will be gone in a few years).

I have.  Used those before I pivoted to UTX.  The Z cords get hard and slick pretty quickly which to me makes them slippery.  The UTX get more tacky as they age.

So by accident I ended up with a REVL Element instead of the Crossline 2.0 I ordered from Carl's, but color me impressed.  I'm one of those that prefer a larger lower hand, which peaked my interest in the 2.0.  However, to me the taper on the Element is less severe than say an MCC or Z grip, and just a bit less than a UTx (took a gamble not building up the lower hand before install).  I've been testing a lot of grips lately and almost settled on the UTx with two extra wraps on the lower hand, but the full cord really does a number on my right hand.  The Element is surprisingly ticking all of the boxes at first use.  I'll play a couple rounds with it on my 7 iron just to be sure, but I really like it.
