Scotty Scheffler boring to watch?

An amazing run of form, but in the nicest possible way, it doesn't feel like it did when Woods was at his best.

 

I don't feel like I'm genuinely watching something historic, or a man who transcends the sport.

I agree.  He is clearly the best player in the world but the lack of emotion, especially on the big par saves, is hard to watch.  I fully understand he's not an emotional player and he needs to do what he needs to do to win but lets not forget this is entertainment.  He just seems bored out there.  It also stinks the tour is split with LIV.  Hard to gauge how good Scotty is actually playing with 3-4 top players not on tour week to week.

I'm ok with him just playing great golf - I don't need more.  Would it be more fun if he had some extra flair?  Maybe.  But in this day and age where you have many gifted athletes who grandstand and emote, I don't need it.  He's being himself and that's spectacular on many levels

The Tour isn’t missing 3-4 top players and easy to gauge how good he is whether regular Tour events or majors where additional players are in the field. 
 

He’s really good - not sure why a referendum on his charisma level - depends on what somebody thinks really great golf looks like - that’s what he plays.

Watching a winner like Scotty never gets boring.  He doesn’t seem to have a weakness in any parts of his game at the moment.

If he had the personality of Tyrrell Hatton he might be the next Tiger, something the PGAT desperately needs. He’ll make some great, against the odds putt for birdie and the crowd goes wild, meantime he stands there looking like someone waiting in line at the DMV. It’s hard to watch because it just sucks the energy out of the room. My wife, who only watches golf when I have it on and she has nothing better to do, once commented “does he ever smile?” and I said “I don’t know honey, I just don’t know.”

He plays a lot like Nicklaus did in his prime. Steady, unspectacular golf and let the other guys make the big mistakes. It's also how Hogan approached the game. Fairways, greens, hit your approach shots pin high and on the correct side of the hole. You can make lots of pars, quite a few birdies and not many big mistakes playing like that. It's not very spectacular but it gets the job done.

when he has +4 birdies in a round its not to bad a watch yes its always alot of missed putts with not many rescue/recovery shots but birdies usually have a good shot or 2 to them.

however scottie can win with 2 rounds that are just absolute snooze shows to watch as long as he has a solid saturday no one i've seen has enough dog in them to catch him on sunday.

Begs the question; do you watch golf for the quality of the golf itself or for theatrics and fist pumps?

There really has only been 1 great player in the history of golf that provided theatrics, and that was Tiger(Mickelson maybe?). Duval during his run and Vijay during his were both arguably more boring than Scheffler.

genuinely interested in knowing where that perspective is coming from ... he "seems" bored because? ... he's not talking to his caddie the way spieth does? ... he doesn't have an "aw, shucks" head move like rory? ... pro golfers in the hunt are probably concentrating as hard as they can at any moment, are they not? ...

What the hell do some watch sports for?  I’m guessing it’s like those that only watch nascar for the crashes.

 

On a golf course that had a setup that was brutal Scottie had just one bogey over the weekend. What can possibly be more entertaining than that?  For the life of me I don’t understand how a sublime performance like that can be criticized.🤦🏼

When I watch Scheffler, I get very similar vibes to a late 80s/early 90s Faldo. 

 

Scheffler is more dominant than Faldo was; he wins/has won more often, and has strung together an unbroken run that wasn't interrupted by purple patches from Norman, Woosie and Seve. The overall feel is very Faldo-like, however. Slow and steady wins the race - albeit some of Scheffler's play has been stellar - rather than crash bang wallop, what-a-picture histrionics and flamboyance. I don't think he's boring to watch. Good golf is good golf, and the golf that Scheffler plays is definitely that. It just isn't... well, it isn't the sort of stuff that takes your breath away. I'd tune in to watch every shot when Woods was winning by a street. As soon as it's obvious Scheffler's going to win, I've more than once switched off. He's not boring, but for me he's not exciting either.

 

I remember Peter Alliss quipping, during Woods' first Masters win, that it was like watching a man playing against boys. That was apt, I thought, to describe the gulf between the golf he played and the rest of the field, and what he was capable of doing, on demand, that the rest couldn't. With Scheffler it's like watching a big kid playing with smaller kids of the same age. He's certainly going to be your winner more often than not, but he isn't in a different league entirely.

 

Full disclosure: I'm not even really a massive Tiger Woods fan. But I'm using him as a barometer - fairly or not - because that's what you have to compare Scheffler to, given his current stellar form.

Nope, gonna have to wrap his marriage/family life around a light pole by running through a bunch of Perkins waitresses before the WWE crowd will appreciate what they're watching. Guy even got himself arrested and it still wasn't enough to satisfy the "ENTERTAIN ME!!!" crowd.

Scotty makes some of the best up and downs for par.  I wish he would show some fire when that happens.  Obviously, that's what I want and probably not what's best for him (I fully understand that) but as a fan I like emotion.  I also think the Tour would benefit from it's top player being firey.

This is cope. Tiger's personal issues were a huge story because Tiger was captivating, not the other way around.
