2 man, 3 club scramble

My club has a 2 man scramble. Each player gets 3 clubs only. Players don’t have to have the same clubs.

thoughts on how to break this up between the two? I think at least one should have a driver and one a putter. Beyond that thoughts?

Can you share clubs? If so you basically have close to a minimalist bag between you. If not you need to choose clubs to your strengths. A driver may not be necessary if one of you hits a long 3W. A putter is a must, and probably a hybrid mid iron and wedge.

Most scrambles are won by proximity to the hole on approach shots and a hot putter.

Good question on sharing clubs. I’ll ask. I’m guessing no because it would defeat the purpose of the 3 club rules.

I played in a 2 man best ball with 5 clubs (but no sharing), which I think is pretty close to many minimalist setups.

so with no sharing depends on each others strengths.

I'd for sure have both your putters so down to 4 clubs. Around the greens is it conducive to bump and run and you need pitches over rough? If you can bump and run the remaining 4 clubs IMO would be something like PW 8i hybrid and either a driver or 3W.

If you need a wedge for pitching up SW, 8i, 5i/h and driver or 3wood

i'm a better driver...our distances are the same but i'm generally a lot straighter.

I'd probably go driver, have him carry a 3 wood or hybrid as a backup. I can practice driver off the deck.

Was thinking I'd carry a wedge and 7 iron, he could carry a putter and 6 or 7 iron.

That would leave us a driver, a putter, some sort of fairway or longer metal, an approach club each and a greenside wedge. He could maybe carry a wedge as well and scrap the 6 or 7 iron since he may have a hybrid.

I'd consider no putters.

D, 7i, W for both.

I'd rather have 2 tries to get it close from the fairway or a bunker than 2 putts with putters. You can putt with any club. Driver probably the best bet of those 3.

Now, the better you are, the more variety makes sense. If you have 6 clubs between you, it's basically alternate shot. If you're 5hc or less, do that. If you're 15s, best have some reundancy and risk mitigation i would think.

You are wasting a spot if you choose a putter. I putt with a 8 or 9 iron with a non-sharp edge. Spend 15-20 minutes on this and you will be surprised how well that you can do.

I play these things with 3 wood, 8 iron and a 52 degree wedge. Might take a 9 iron if the course is short.
