Versatile vokey that doesn’t dig. What grind?

Looking for some help - need a 60 degree that offers some protection on short chips/pitches in soft conditions that also play well in firm sand?

for reference my winter wedge is a d grind and I love it.  My summer wedges when things get really firm is a k* and it’s almost perfect, but gets diggy when it’s soft.  Is there something that plays more like a d, but can open up and sit low to get under the ball in firm wet bunkers? A+ or v?

It's not a 60 degree, but I agree with Aaron Dill's answer to a similar question; "If you had to pick one wedge to use after the pitching wedge, what would it be and why?": (Vokey 56-14F) – “I think it’s plenty of loft for anyone but not too much where you’re disconnected from the PW. The F style of sole tends to be forgiving yet subtly versatile in most situations.”   https://www.golfwrx.com/642471/golf-101-if-you-could-only-pick-one-wedge-loft-to-use-what-would-it-be/

I have a 50 and 56, both in f grind that I like.

Is the 56 a 14 degree bounce?  The 14F is something special for soft conditions.

That being said, I have switched to The 56 Cleveland CBX Zipcore for soft conditions, it is amazing (has 12 degree bounce).

It may or may not be a good fit for you, but I have had pretty good luck with the S grind for lob wedge. It doesn’t dig much on me and I can use it fine in bunkers with firm sand.

V could be an option. I have always been intrigued but have never taken the leap.

I have always used the 60S for this reason - doesn’t dig but is ok for use in bunkers.

I think S is the sweetspot in that sense.

I use F in my 48 which doesnt dig even at full shots but opening the face is no bueno.

Next up is 54S which I think is perfect. For me it gets in and out quickly, never had a shot out of ”water damaged fairway” that digs to the point it sticks to the ground. Its also nice in soft bunkers  and those with a little sand over a hard bottom.

60M is my emergency wedge. It works great on really tight lies where it bites down to give a good strike location. Its also my go to when Im in a very hard bunker, it just cuts straight thru the hard layer. (Water packed). However, it can be penalizing in lush rough, this is again where the 54S shines.

I chose between S and D for my sand wedge and landed on S. Gets thru softer sand more easily than D and still doing a good job in firm ones.

Everyone swings the club differently, but for me personally I am very happy with my new 60* V grind. I'm making good contact with it on all sorts of shots. I've had the D grind, but was always worried about skulling it, so I tended to de-loft it and hit lower shots than I prefer in many situations. Have played an M grind for years which is fine, but it is more temperamental than the V. The V is just easy for me.

S grind gets overlooked because it's boring, but can be played pretty much in any condition. Mid bounce is a swiss army knife, and trailing edge relief adds trajectory in firmer conditions. Sometimes you might notice the 56F trail edge grab when it gets firm and you get that "drop kick" kind of chip. S grind doesn't have that issue.

I agree with this.  V grind has been amazing for me.  60 degree went from a get of jail club to a do everything around the green club.  Doesn't dig and I have no problem off tight lies yet has forgiving bounce

A+ should play like the M but slightly faster through the ground. If you like the D the M or A+ seems like the logical lower bounce progression, the V would dig less but the grind is different than what you've been playing, it is a great higher bounce grind though so it could work great for you.

I had a 54 D and 58 D, but just got a 58 K*

I go to the 54D when in deep rough, wet fairways, or soft sand.  K* for everything else around the greens.  Might want to look at how you mix and match your SW and LW grinds to give you the versaility that you need.

I’d add a vote for V grind - I added leading edge relief and smoothed out the grind lines. Upside is it’s incredibly versatile and doesn’t dig. Compared to a stock D grind, the forward bounce area is narrower so it’s much easier to open. I found the D to just bounce off of firm sand, whereas V doesn’t skid as much.

Downside to V is that much camber and the smoothed sole feels slow through the turf on longer shots. Maybe less a problem in wet conditions - now that I’m (back) in AZ, it has a difficult time with our firm turf, so I’m actually moving to K* 😅

You could take my approach and have the best of both worlds - a 60.12D AND and a 60.06K 😉

Seriously, I realized that the top of my bag didn't need so many options so I freed up a slot and added a 2nd 60. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet but I think the theory is sound enough. The 60.06K will handle tight/firm conditions and wet/firm sand, and the 60.12D will take care of the rest. More versatility around the green should be a good deal more valuable than having another option at the top of the bag, where I rarely hit a green from outside 200 anyway.

I doubt you can find a single 60 that will cover the range of shots you are trying to address, without compromising effectiveness in some important area. Generally I think most people tend to go with a higher bounce 56 and a lower bounce 60 and then just choose from those two depending on conditions. That could be a good approach if you don't have the space for another wedge. I tend to use my 56 most of the time but when the 60 becomes necessary I'm usually in trouble of some sort, so it's good to have another answer in the bag for those occasions.

V grind would be what I would try.  S is often overlooked as well because its, as mentioned, sorta boring.  All it does is work just about everywhere and in any situation you might face.  I love my 54s.

The V has great forward bounce at 10, but a polished relief so you can manipulate the face.  Its the higher bounce (friendlier for steeper swings) than T.  Im a sweeper so T is loads of fun for me but you might be a V player.

And really, any vokey (or other model) will dig if its not the right grind/bounce for you - you really just gotta try them and listen to the feedback.  Couple fitters told me in wedge fitting, they 100% listen to the strike and turf interaction sounds in fittings.

I had these same thoughts and the V has been amazing. great on tight lies, good enough in the sand, enough bounce to protect in some wet/soft spots. I like to open it up a ton and it works great

This recent post discusses a few of the vokey lob wedge grinds.  The V is probably a good one for the OP to try.  Enough bounce to be reasonably forgiving from soft surfaces when played square, but the leading edge stays pretty low when laid open, so its playable from firm surfaces.  I wish the V was easier to find.

Love the discussion.

I don’t use the 60 much past 50-60 yards as id much prefer to bring a 56 in low and spinny past that.

Im the same way - much prefer to use my 57* to do the same thing.  Heck I will even grab the 53* and try to pull off the ultimate cheddar shot.  Im crazy like that.  And I am leaving for vacation in NC where I get to play on Bermuda compared to bent I usually play on in Ohio so I will either be laughing or crying next week as I try to spin em close. Damn Bermuda.

Been playing a 60 M grind for years. I call it the swiss army knife wedge, it does everything I ask it to do. It may not be optimum for all conditions, but I can either open it, square it , etc. to get it to do what I want. It's used from flop shots and/or bunkers around the green, to full shots of 85 yds. It's been a $$$ maker.

I think it’s going to be the v or m grind.  I’ve never tried an m for fear of getting diggy around the greens when it’s soft.  That’s my main issue with the k*

however I really need a hard/wet packed bunker club for the 9 months of the year we have those in the PNW.  The d and f grinds struggle to get into the sand or under the ball, and the too much undulation in the surface to pick them with a square face.

V may be a good option, however when you open it there is no “help” from the trailing edge because it has so much trailing edge relief. The K* you have has a wide sole and a blunted leading but is very low bounce. Since your digging it has to be because the sole is effectively too narrow. A wider sole is going to help, so I would recommend either the K low bounce which has a couple degrees more bounce and a wider effective sole width. That will stop you from digging as much but still give you the option to open the face.

The annoying answer is a wedge works 60K with leading/trailing edge.  It’s the same grind but with a slightly higher peak bounce.
