(Unexplainable) Aspects of Golf

I'll start it off:

1) For some reason every golf broadcaster needs to become a metrologist only when speaking about fog. They can't say fog but instead must use the word marine layer. Actually, even meteorologist say fog. WTF.

2) All American golfers must pronounce amateur and renaissance like they're English. You do not need to change the pronunciation of other words, just those two. If you don't, jail is the typical punishment.

I really can’t think of anything that golf commentators do that bother me.

Marine layer and fog are not the same thing.  Sometimes you can have fog along with a marine layer, sometimes not.

The only thing I can think of I don't like is the old timer talk. 

 

"Back in my day we used to hit driver 2 iron on this hole". No one cares what you hit in the 80s

I know they aren't the same thing, but does that really matter for golf commentators? I think the laymen's idea of interchanging them is fine lol. That's what I meant by the metrologist comment.

Use of the word carom.

 

No one other than golf announcers use this word. Normal people say rebounded. Or bounced. Or even ricocheted. But never caromed.

Heaven forbid people be from different places, or be born in a different time.  Golf is something everyone can play, and that's a good thing.

I don't know if this is a recent change or not, but the pronunciation of "6th" is something I've noticed recently.

Ian Baker-Finch avoids this by always going for: "Now on 6 green" or "Here he is on 9 tee". 

 

Something completely different: In the broadcast of the 3rd round of the Travelers one man in the broadacst team insisted that Tommy Fleetwood hit mini driver every time the club, which could be seen wasn't clearly an iron.

Must be a result of people watching too many Rick Shiels videos.
He often announces that he will "play a chippy 8" and the proceeds to make a 120% percent swing, with which he pull-hooks it 15 yards left and 20 yards long.

I get irrationally mad when "people" say fairway metal.

 

They probably think they're being so clever, but it justs end up sounding extremely smug.

Tirico referring to lightning as "electricity" was pretty strange. I had to explain to my wife half listening to the broadcast that no the electricity was not out at the golf course.
