Lead shoulder separating from the chin

I've seen this idea referenced quite a few times on here, notably by @MonteScheinblum. I'm not sure I totally understand what it means on a practical level. It's definitely something that would be visible on video, though. Here's a somewhat recent example where Monte mentioned it:

 

 

So I'm curious: what's the mechanism? I.e., what body movement actually creates that separation? And what does that do for the swing motion overall?

the lowering of the arms in transition is what allows this to happen (cast A from NTC). It’s also part of the comment about moving the arms faster for most people.

 

its a shallowing move nd prevents the hips from moving towards the ball.

Monte had it in his post you quoted, stay in left tilt longer. Though I'd add that it's really a bit of an increase in left side tilt in that transition movement, which is what creates that lowering. A video from Tyler Ferrell on the subject.

I could never get it until I saw this

 

Something to try:

lower the arms without twisting open the upper body and let the feet drive the rotation, while trying to keep your left ear pointing down the target line.

I see elements of all three of these explanations when I look at this (mostly) synchronized video I made of Adam Scott a while back:

 

 

1. Lowering arms

2. Keeping/adding left tilt

3. Keeping left ear to the target

 

It looks like the greatest magnitude of shoulder movement away from chin comes between P5 and P6. 

 

An interesting thing about Adam Scott is how he stabilizes his neck relative to his body.

It's actually kind of odd looking when you focus on Adam Scott's neck.

 

 

If his torso is going left, then his neck has to be protracting (moving forward) to be able to keep his head the same distance from the ball. If it maintained the same angle as at address, his head would move away from the ball. It's also moving downward.
