i230 Short Irons

Holy Moses

Recommended Posts

After playing Ping i20s for 12 years, I went to i230s with the same PX 6.0 shafts. I hit my 3-5 irons really well, but the 6-PW short are very spinny and short. I’m backing balls up on dry greens, I’m losing a ton of distance into the wind, and I’ve lost at least half a club of distance total. Has anyone else experienced this? My i230s are accurate, but the short irons are spin machines for me.

I played 210s and now 230s.  I don’t notice any big difference between my long and short irons in the 230s.  I have consistent gaps from the 4 iron through the gap wedge.  Where I do have a big gap is between the i230 gap wedge and my Glide Forged Pro 56 degree.  Both my 56 and 60 degree wedges do exactly what you describe.  Fly high and short.  I’m dead accurate with them and really love using them, but I have a 20 yard gap between my gap wedge and my 56.

I have DG105 R300s in all my irons and wedges, so they all launch pretty high.

Started with I 230 4-gw had same issues short irons weren't doing me any favors. Went to blue print s 7-pw and got the s159 wedges. Now I play the i230 4 iron and the rest blue print s and have no regrets. Project x 6.5 shafts. I'm honestly not seeing that bif of a difference in forgiveness and the feel is far better.

Why would Ping make short irons so short and spinny? It’s clearly due to the extra grooves. Just seems like they got bored and wanted to try something new and it backfired.

Lots of players need additional spin - i think there was a stat somewhere that Ping referenced in one of their pod casts (Proving Grounds) that an average golfer spins a 7 at 4700 or something like that

I have the same issue with the i230's thou. 5 and 6 iron are great for me, 7, 8, 9 spin too much and don't go the distance I'd expect as a result. The advantage is that even on mishits, spin is high enough to hold for me 😉 I ended up strengthening 8, 9 and PW 1*

But i230s are decent players irons, so I wouldn’t think they’d need more spin

I just bought i210s. From what I gather, they are better irons for me and not as spinny.

I didn’t find any difference in spin or yardages between my 210s and my 230s.  Played identically, though I much preferred the weighting on the 230s once I got used to them.

I’m hoping they play different for me. I’m really surprised your spin numbers with the i230s aren’t crazy high.

Many of the modern tour level balls are designed to spin less off the driver and longer irons and spin more off the wedges. Can always experiment with different balls and see what suits you better. I also play the i230's but didn't notice any yardage difference when I switched. I started playing the newer TP5 ball a couple weeks ago and it seems to be about half a club longer with my irons than a ProV1, don't really notice any difference with the driver and fairway woods. The drawback is I don't seem to get as much spin around the greens with the TP5.

I would count that as a possibility if I didn’t see my same short iron situation come up in a few threads and after I tried it with a few different balls. There’s something going on with the i230 extra grooves for players that have power. The extra grooves aren’t in the i240s and there’s gotta be a reason for that.

They may be, as I have a very high ball flight, though I also have mid/high launch shafts.  I’m not a long hitter at my age, but I also swing my irons smoothly and rarely attack the ball like some people do.  I just don’t see any difference between the long and short irons.  I basically have a 10 yard gap between every club, 4 iron to gap wedge.  As I’ve aged, and gone from i3’s to i210s to i230s, my yardages have gone done, but consistently across the bag.  I haven’t noticed any large gap anywhere in the bag, until I get to the 56.

Got new irons last year and it came down to the Titleist 150’s and the i230’s.

I went with power spec’d i230’s with hard stepped Modus 105’s.

I230’s were the same distance as the 150’s including the short irons. The i230’s were significantly more forgiving and consistent throughout the set- 5 thru UW.

i230’s are a great set of irons and I couldn’t be more happy with them

Currently gaming mp 243s bent 2* weak with C taper 130. Great irons when centered, good turf interaction and great feel. Picked up a minty set of i230s with TI x100s hoping for more consistency throughout the set. I’m 91-93 mph 7i typically -4 AOA.

With all the comments about i230s spinning too much and ballooning, do I need to look at going power spec in these or go BP S in 8-P?

As a point of reference, I normally hit my PW 125-130 with an average attack angle. My driver clubhead speed is 110. I’m going to test my i210s against my i230s, but I bet the i230 short irons spin 1,000 RPMs more.

I think you’ll be happy with i230s. Their front to back consistency is incredible, even if your strike ventures around the face a little. If you’ve bent the Mizzys 2 weak and been happy, I’d try the i230s straight up before you make any big decisions.

I find mine to be fine spin wise but I have a weird distance drop off between the 8 and 9, i can’t work out why. My iron gapping is generally 10m but between 8 to 9 i’m 15m. Who knows,..

Lots of high end players love the high spin. Both the i210 and i230 are on the higher end of spin for irons in this category. The i230 are amongst the most played irons on the LPGA tour, they are very, very good. That said, I also had problems with spinning i210's and i230's a little too much. I probably should have kept the i230's but my ego got the best of me, you know, just have to hit that 7i about 170, heaven forbid it's 160 with a club with 3 degrees less loft. From what I recall, doing my research before buying the i230's, if anything the i230's spin a fraction less than the i210's. Not more.

I haven’t, it has crossed my mind but figured ping should be as good as any for spec accuracy.

For over a year, I had both the i210s and still have the i230s. Both in standard spec. The latter spins way more for me. I can spin a 7-iron back with the i230s, whereas I needed at least a 9i in the i210s.

Frequently, I'm short about 6-10 yards compared to the i210s (or the ZXi7s I replaced the i210s with recently). But I really like my dispersion with the i230s. FBLR! But I don't like having to use a 6i for my usual 7i distances.

I'm considering on getting the lofts adjusted to what would be Powerspec (2* strong).

I was just on GC Quad and took the clubs to a Top Tracer Range. Averaged 9500 spin with my i230 PW, but only 8700 with my i210 PW. A little higher launch with the i230 also. But I also felt like I would hit a pushy high spinner with my i230s occasionally that I did not hit with my i210s. I just like the look of the i210s too at address. I prefer what looks to be some more offset.

This makes a lot of sense stumbling across this thread.... switched from i210s in retro spec to i230s in standard spec and didn't notice much on course difference, not any real change in yardage. For me, they launch a bit lower (makes sense) but I still have ample stopping power. One hop and stop throughout the set. PW is 125ish, 7 160ish, for reference. Zero complaints paired with my Modus 120X shafts. But yeah, this thread made something click.
