Matt Blois video on reducing turn and speed

Recommended Posts

I thought this was a good watch, from a technical point of view and also how he knows it will take time to change his move. Shows how his old patterns creep in and the results of that.

@MonteScheinblum is he essentially trying to do a no turn thought like you teach?

Personal experience, I've been playing way better golf (hopefully getting to scratch later this year), with what it seems to me like 3/4 swings back and forth (swing thought: Rahm and Fleetwood umbrella) all the way through the bag - used to do it to flight and control wedges, but found out that it helped my driving a lot also. Didn't lose much, if any, distance because of better strikes, path, face - thus smash, and reducing the penalty and recovery shots that can kill a scorecard. I think a lot of amateurs would benefit from this, earlier wrist set (think L shape - arms and club by lead arm parallel on the backswing, and just to transition from there... the sheer momentum of body motion and club will inevitably get you to turn more, and in sync!) --> better strikes all around, more GIR and/or near GIR, index going down

It piqued my interest as I tend to turn back to hard and over rotate hips etc and end up with arm run on and too much slack in the system... I end up losing all structure at the top.

Did you work on any particular feels to help you do this? Even when I think short and feel like i'm hardly turning I can still have loads of hip turn and arm run on. I guess it just takes reps to rewire your feels eh

As mentioned, in my preshot routine I think of 'Rahm and Fleetwood umbrella' when stepping in the shot - just a reminder to keep it 'short and tight', and I've been practicing enough to know my carry distances, so I don't need the feel to 'get into one' with a fuller turn, longer swing - where usually the * hit the fan... overall a lot of better strikes, and you can't go wrong with drives that stay in play and approaches that are pin high - lots of GIR or close by save opportunities

So you feel like your effort to turn / swing back is done by lead arm parallel, and from there you kind of stop turning and start to think downswing? Which maybe ends up with a little extra free turn to a 3/4 backswing with no tension in transition? Rather than a forced 3/4 swing, that ends up full?

This video feels like it's hitting close to home.  I very recently started to do something similar in my swing, where I stopped trying to rotate/open and feel almost as if my lower body doesn't do much at all. Just allow the club to swing back down from the top and let the momentum bring me into my finish.  My lower body is working, I'm just no longer trying to force it.

I think over the past 5+ years or so I fell deep into the "you gotta rotate/get more open" in the swing. (ala Gankas type stuff).  I'm sure if you get lessons in person it's a different story, but I think trying to incorporate that in my living room did more harm than good over the years. I played baseball all my life and can get 110+ mph clubhead on Trackman, so "getting open" really isn't my problem.  My problem is being able to control the golf ball....like what Matt talked about in that video.

Correct, on the first part, that is my feel... and you can see on video (as with most) that body motion and club momentum keep everything turning a tad - but it 'forces' me to set wrists early (as I have a tendency to set them late with a longer swing, think Cam Smith driver swing) - but also, as an aside benefit, it gets me to pressure lead side earlier, since by P3 I'm ready to transition, downswing if that makes sense.

I think several of Matt's videos have been really helpful for me in the past few months, particularly his "you don't need more lag" and the "slice to draw in minutes" videos. Those are both feels and moves that I try to do in my swing but always good to have a reminder and slightly different explanation of it. I have loved his content the last year.

I’ll have to watch later. Based on comments it sounds like what my coach wants me to also work on. Staying connected with arms and not overswinging.

This is really good, thanks for sharing. I share a lot of similarities with Matt, not the same speed, but runoff backswing, holding (versus letting go) of wrist angles, and also issue with wrist/forearm pain. Curious to get Monte's thoughts as well because he's the main person I've seen teach concepts that have allowed me to swing pain-free
