Amazing how quick people are to predict someone's fall from grace.  I do NOT believe Scotty is anywhere near done.

He actually gained a little over .63 strokes on the field in this years US Open versus losing 1.47 strokes in last years event....so you could say he's actually putting better in this event. 

 

This was also his 8th top 10 in a row.  I think he'll be just fine going forward. If he can keep his driver in the fairway next year he'll be in contention at Shinnecock.

If they both went all out, I don't think so. I get the impression that Spieth is swinging 100% a lot of the time to make up for his perceived lack of distance, whereas Scheffler is swinging 85% in control, focusing on more fairways than distance as a strategy. Scheffler was longer 4 years ago when he came out on tour, if you watch him, it's not like he's lost speed or hits the ball worse than then. A conscious decision.

YJS had 'unsustainably' high stats in putting and recovery

SS has 'unsustainably' high stats in approach and recovery

question isnt if he slows down its when and why. causes could be anything from a change in focus to injuries or just getting older while the avg. competition stays the same age or gets younger.

Approach and recovery are much less variable than putting. Morikawa has had great approach his whole career, Tiger had "unsustainable" approach and recovery his whole career. He's just good at it.

I don't really think this is pot stirring or anything controversial. Spieth is kind of the normal career for great players. Players for the most part have a short window where they are on fire and then tend to fade. The true greats are the ones that can get two of those periods in their career. If Scheffler goes on to win two tournaments a year and throws in another major or two it will be a great career.

 

People don't do what Tiger did.

tiger is great example he stopped being as good on approach and didnt win a major from 2009 - 2019 due to injuries and life

I'm obviously reacting a little early, but he's already shown a need to "fix" putting woes by going to a mallet, and now attempting the claw. It doesn't take too many blown shorties to shake a guy to his core and completely melt down putting-wise. I could totally see a DF3 in his near future, or possibly a broom.

Now there is the total opposite.

Tiger was cheating so much it was common knowledge on tour and media. However, he only copying what his dad did.

As a massive Adam Scott fan I can tell you that this is the exact reason he doesn't have at least 5 Majors right now haha

 

He had the swing to win a bunch of them. Just couldn't ever get that putter rolling well consistently.

 

When you see them break out the broomsticks, the arm locks, and the claw grip variations you know they're desperate.

I was going to beg to differ, but looked each up.  This year my guys, Spieth and Thomas are a few yards longer than Scottie.  Using charting, Spieth 57th vs Scottie is 73rd, but in most other stats, Scottie leads this year.

Dont understand why Scottie's a bad short putter and has to use a different grip too lol

 

Sure he has a green at home that he can practice short ones for an hour a day.... putting takes no toll on body either like fulls swings do

 

Put on some chill music grab a lemonade and kill an hour easy... very relaxing like a meditation

All of Scottie's stats were in the green for the tournament while having his B game. He gained more than half a stroke on the rest of the field putting (and 3 strokes on the field total) while on a course that was literally designed to break people. I think he *might* be just fine considering he's had five other rounds this year with poorer putting stats relative to the field.

I took one 'real' golf lesson in my life when I was 40 (a present from my wife).

 

I was a 6 at the time and not a terrible player, but I knew there was something missing.

 

After the pro saw me swing a bunch and video-taped everything, he proceeded to give his conclusion.

 

"Congratulations. You've mastered the art of not turning." : )

 

In other words, I had a very flawed swing that was holding me back, but I had done it so often I was able to make it work (sort of)...
