Qi35 Core 9 wood - Any intel?

Recommended Posts

Any word or hunch on whether this might be a special release later this year? Or a Core 7 wood with the FCT?

Spent a Saturday afternoon trying to gap my Stealth 2+ 5 wood and 5 iron, something to swap with my 4h when higher launch is called for.

Was already difficult trying to find someone with an 8x shaft to demo with a high lofted wood, but pieced together a Qi35 Tour 7 Wood with a Velocore+ 8x at stock TaylorMade 5w length (42.25”) at a local store. Sole weight all the way back on both clubs.

To my surprise, GC monitor showed identical carry, total, spin, and ball speed between my 5w and Qi35 Tour 7w. 7w had slightly more moonball launch, peak, descent. Not eager to replace 5w though.

When set to “HIGHER” and choking to 41-ish playing length, the Qi35 hit my desired gapping with commensurate changes in monitor numbers. So ostensibly the Qi35 turned into a 9w loft and length with 4 deg closed face angle.

Dispersion good, but not super excited to play a draw-biased 7w on top of my stock baby draw. Hence the interest in a core model Qi35 9w that gets paraded about lately but is not available to the plebians.

What say you, WRXers?..
Thanks in advance.

The Qi35 core 9 wood is a tour only club. You could look for a QI10 core 9 wood. That was a retail product last year.

Not sure why TM didn’t release the 9 metal especially with the popularity of these clubs now.  I bet we see one in the TM next line if they don’t release a LE of this sooner.

Probably keeping it in their back pocket for a later release

Thanks, y’all!

@Bskib very cool, thanks for introducing me to Peoples Golf 🙈

@bird_4_3 just wish I could demo with a relevant shaft! I tried a g440 9 wood since posting—hard for me to trust the numbers with a 60g stiff stock 5w shaft.

Hoping for the special release later this year. Or maybe mess around with a GT1 9w at a local Titleist fitting since shaft catalog is deeper than what I’m finding for TM in these local stores.

All the hype around the high lofted fairway woods on tour, in the hands of the best players and specs that are so custom has created quite the fitting issue.

What fitters have heavy weight X-flex shafts in a 9wd length and even -1”?

I’ve started with a G430 5hybrid, Ventus Black 10X. I think it’s got a lot of potential, I’m not quite set on the distance. Could be a 5 iron or a 4 iron equivalent, seems like I can throw it up in the air and play to a 5 iron number with great stopping power. Or I can flight it down and it plays more like a 4-iron.

The 4-hybrid (G440) has been less consistent. Much more prone to a big miss left.

So that makes me very curious about a 7 or 9 wood that might fit the bill. It’ll be 75% tee usage. Could it be a 7 wood with a shorter shaft, a 9 wood, maybe even a 9 wood under length. I don’t know of any place that can handle those types of fitting variables.

Yeah I always think thats the issue in getting fit for a 7/9w, the shafts you'd actually want to play in them are only available custom, plus the headweight on them are probably really off making a really light SW.  I tried some 7w but ended up with a 100g shaft in my TS 4h down a degree and its deadly and easy to hit from 190-215.  It feels like rebar but I love it.

Anybody else just find Taylormade choices for high lofted woods and hybrids appalling. They want to be known for their woods but a lot of high lofted stuff is either bonded or not available for lefties. Your company is named Taylormade yet ping and titleist are kicking your butt getting people fit in these categories

This will change next year as demand increases for 9 woods across the board I think. Big miss.

Shaft brands need to come to the party with heavier wood shafts too.

Very much appreciate the commiseration haha. Every variable to dial in a high loft FW seems lacking in this “get fit!” era.

Even beyond TaylorMade:

1. G440 Max 9w fitter head I came across was built with a lighter screw.

2. Tried a GT1 23 deg hybrid because they didn’t have the 24 deg FW head. At least with SureFit hybrid hosel, I could put in a Tensei 1K Black 85 hybrid shaft and get in the ballpark.

Anyway, here’s to hoping these gaps get filled as the WITB pics nudge the market.

Yeah like I think that the benefit of a 9w would basically be a sledgehammer you just hammer directly down behind the ball and having it shoot straight up.  But you can't do that with a 65g high launch shaft and light head.  Our retail 7/9 woods are not remotely what we'd want to play, especially for better golfers.

Maybe try the TSr1 5 Hybrid, overall profile is more of a "wood" look from address with the deep face of a hybrid. Also, the SureFit hosel will accommodate .335 wood shafts.

A buddy of mine has two, one for a 7W & 9W alternatives. Both fairway length and shaft profile he prefers in his fairways.

My Sonartec 7W is 23*. I just noticed this is at 24* - kind of funny how they keep juicing the loft. A 9w should be more like 27+ loft.

The stated loft is 24°. The measured loft is 23. Haven’t been able to hit it yet to provide proper feedback other than it looks awesome and easy to hit.

The toughest part for a lot of better players is the fit and build part of the equation.  I am in love with my current G440 Max 7w.  I had it built from Ping at 41”, Ventus 8X, tipped 1.5”.  It’s likely going to take some guesswork to get it right for people, but I think the payoff is there.

As a no cost option for a bunch of brands, I think that Tensei Black 85 S tipped 1.5” built at 41” is probably a good baseline to start figuring out where to go.
