... My experience is very similar to yours. Having played P790's in Chicago with soft greens, then moving to Phoenix with hard fast greens I just could't hold them with mid/long irons. I can't say anything negative about my 3DP's (other than the price). Plenty of height and spin to hit and hold hard, fast desert greens and a little more accurate than my King Tours. For me at least, I would never consider them low spin and definitely not comparable to P790's.

The closest conditions I have played to what you have in Phoenix would be St George UT. I was seeing about 2-3 yards of rollout with the 5 and 6 irons there.

So probaly about 125 ish.  My hypothesis is that about the limit before they get dicey on playability.

Wouldn’t faster swing speeds lead to more height and spin? I play with a guy that is very fast but he hit pitching wedge where I’m pulling 7 iron probably not a good comparison.

What year/version of the p790s where you playing?  The 2025 version and even the previous version spun more for me than the 3dp.  They also apexed a touch lower.

the 2019 790 were rocket ships and much more like the 3dp for launch and spin, although 3dp was more (much more) consistent/repeatable.

basically if I played a 7200 yard course with no wind ever and greens that stimped less than 6 I would game the 3dp.

... The thing about anecdotal experience is it's anecdotal. Swing speed, AOA, shaft lean and several other factors can have the same irons performing quite differently for different players. I played the 2019 and the 2021 P790's.  I normally shoot around par or under and carry my 7 iron 160. I have not used my LM but I don't see much spin difference if any compared to my King Tours. I like my irons to hit, hop once and trickle a foot or so. That is exactly what I get with my 3DP's. I am not fan of comments like "They don't spin" and prefer "They don't spin for me". I don't question yours or Morry's comments about spin for you guys, but my experience is obviously very different. If they didn't spin enough for my game, I would go right back to my King Tours and sell the 3DP's.

Not always.  I think most that have speed have had to learn to deloft the club a bit.  I’m not a low spin player, but I could t spin the 3dp much over 5k with a 7 iron.  It also apexed at about 135 or so feet and and was about 140 ish ballspeed.

For comparison that’s my 5 iron normal, but still a touch less spin with 15-20 more feet of higher

Totally agree.  I think they are probably a fantastic iron if you either have higher dyanmic loft.  They can also work for folks that don’t have higher ball speeds as they do launch way up in the air and have enough height to stop on most greens as long as your not coming in hot (hence my 125 ish comment for 7 iron)

I still occasionally play my  MP-33's  and came to LIMIT3D's off ZX5/ZX7's.  I'm frankly not having spin problems with the LIMIT3D's.  Maybe it's the shafts or my swing speed being slower than some of you folks.  My 7 iron gets a good high arc and about 155 to 165.  Had a 162 yesterday into an extremely hard & dense 9 month old Mini Verde green and it rolled out 4 feet.  Mini Verde greens are so dense that there is little use for divot repairs as they only have very slight ball touchdown dents.  Even with my MP-33's the average rollout is about the same, 4-8 feet.  On softer greens I don't get a 2 or 3 foot spin back with the 9 iron but it is hop & stop.

Maybe if I was getting 175+ yards the spin would be more of an issue?   I also just read an entire 3DP thread with 79 posts and only one guy mentioned low spin.  The high forgiveness and very consistent distance of the 3DP/LIMIT3D's kinda offsets any spin issues for me and I would hazard most other users.

if you read the entire thread, you would see low spin mentioned multiple times

it made me weary before I got mine, but decided to ignore it

it's so pronounced, you cannot ignore it - sorry my man

your last line is likely VERY True for a lot or maybe 'most' as you say

Just not people like me who naturally have a lower spin swing or maybe those that prefer softer balls that spin less

If history is any indication, prices will eventually come down.
Weren’t CD 💿 players initially like $1k+!! 😜

Down the road when other oems start flooding the market with similar stuff, prices will normalize I’m sure.  I don’t see the MBs being cheaper than the current 3DP line if they are coming out within the next couple weeks as reported.

Yeah, just kidding around. It will obvi take a while.
Based on the ‘spin drama’, one should be able to pick up a used set of the current iteration for a song! 🎶

Lots of sets on eBay.  Cobra resale values are never strong, so lots of great deals out there on used sticks.

Has this review by Matty been discussed previously? Peak height is high but wouldn't say spin is low at ~6,100 and that’s while hitting a draw. AoA is not steep either at ~3.2.

Edit.  His dynamic loft is decent.  I’m usually around 22 with a 32 degree club.

hes higher now, around 26-27 ish with the same club

Combo set in the making👍

Yup.  The 4 iron in the 3dp is playable.  I would have to think the MBs are similar to the ones that are being used on tour so spin isn’t a problem (although non of the tour players are exactly poster child’s for great iron play relative to their peers right now)

We've got 3 or 4 folks on here very definitively and very loudly declaring at the top of their lung power that "3DP's DON'T SPIN!!!" And, "SORRY PAL, COBRA 3DP's DON'T SPIN!!"

The vast majority of users seem to have no such problems, especially in light of the high degree of controllability and very consistent 3DP distance and rollout.

High spin and spin back is a fun thing, even a very cool thing to see.  But,  the extent to which it is consistently more precise than a consistent "hop & stop" is questionable at best.

Which is why we saw a number of pros last week get into a number of serious spin back disasters because they didn't control and reign in their high spin contact abilities.  None of them have high spin grooves, they just know how to hit very high spin shots when needed.   It's a skill.

I also remember 60 & 62 deg copper alloy wedges with sharper leading edges in the late 90's that had virtually no grooves getting very consistent spin back.  Spin back is as much or more a matter of precise contact and compression than simply "higher spin grooves".

I also remember and have the 2000 era Tour Issue TM RAC Box Cutter wedges that literally shredded the ball and finally caused USGA and R&A to significantly outlaw all of those sharp wedge and iron grooves to reign in the big driver bombers of that era  who were landing in wet rough with impunity and hitting super spin wedge shots to the pin.

So, as someone else recently commented, there is nothing wrong with saying, "These 3DP irons simply don't provide the spin assistance that my swing needs"  as opposed to the inaccurate and highly personalized declarations that, "These 3DP irons DON'T SPIN!"

lol

how about this.  They spin enough for you and some others based on how you want to play the game, they don’t spin enough for me and others based on how we play the game?

It’s helpful not to minimize people’s feedback to suit your narrative.

I’ve said this about 5 times but I will repeat it.  I think these will feel like the clubs lots of people have been searching for and be great clubs for them.  They don’t fit everyone universally.  They don’t spin enough for me, and spin less than similar clubs like the p790  (the 3dp are more consistent in what they do) when adjusted for loft.

Practically no difference in terms of spin between 790 and 3dp according to a robot with more consistency. Different strokes. If you don’t like them you do you.

Look similar at 80 mph for a robot.

as you point out.  Humans aren’t robots so it’s highly likely one club with suit a person better than another 😀

They are just stronger lofted. I think loft to loft they are right there.

I noticed that too but does Cobra usually release a new line of irons this time each year?

It’s been like for the past month.  Things will be fully stocked for a few days and then low stock, then fully stocked again.

wilson and Srixon have similar issues at times

It is interesting/encouraging 3DP users in here haven't cited spin issues. I am a low spin player whose home course is borderline trampoline style hard bermuda greens, and I was eagerly waiting the release of these, but after comments in the original thread + youtube reviews on the lower spin I figured they'd be a non-starter for me. Below is a chart from AskGolfNut, who is maybe my favorite YouTube gear reviewer (not all irons are shown, only the top 6 in that snippet). His conclusions were while they are his top rated players distance iron of 2024, they were similar in spin to the Ping i530 and less than the ZX5 MKii, both of which are known as low spin heads. I held off my fitting thinking they'd be too low spin for me and figured i'd wait for the new Ping i240s and Titleist offerings, but I am encouraged by the amount of people in here who haven't found it to be an issue. I'd love to be able to play a set of these with the level of forgiveness they offer.
