What are the next two clubs in your bag?  I’m my current set up is

8* GT2

13* GT280

18* Adam’s Idea Pro hybrid (circa 2008)

4 iron - PW (P770/P7CB combo)

I’m considering making some adjustments to this, and my Idea Pro could probably use an upgrade. The 5 and 4 iron are somewhat redundant. It would also be nice to have a higher launch option into par 5’s.

Considering a 5 wood (never played one) and utility 3 iron set up instead.

Wanted to get some thoughts from people in the same boat.

Mine is:

Callaway Elyte TD max 9.0

Callaway Elyte 13.5 mini.  for tight holes or a hole that is 350 yards or less

Callaway TD 5 and 7 woods.  215 and 200 yard clubs.

The 5 wood is for a little extra off the deck on par 5's.  It may come out of the bag in exchange for a 60* wedge when needed.

Hi

if you look at my signature you’ll see I’m a person literally playing out your scenario.

if I know the course will require 200-220 yard approaches I swap the 5w in. Usually it is in place of the 3h but my driver game is getting to the point where I may drop the mini. I’m better at keeping the ball low with the 3h off the tee.

I sometimes drop the 5i when it’s not going well and I know I’d never be able to hold the green with it but I am improving my 5i at the moment.

so yeah in summary my 5w is on the bench ready to jump in as it’s trajectory is much higher than the 3h.

Not sure what your swing speed is but I LOVE my 7 Wood. I carries about 225-230 and lands very soft. So the top of my bag looks like this:

PXG 0311 Tour -1 10* - Carry 270 yd, 290 total
PXG Secret Weapon 13* - Carry 255, 270 total (this is so good I have started leaving my driver at home)
PXG Black Ops 7 Wood 21* - Carry 225, 240 total

I have a 4W but I don't really need it. The course I play is 6,100 yds so reaching par 5s is not typically an issue. Really just need something to launch high and stop and the 7W is just the ticket.

I was Cally Mini 13.5 but it was kind of a one trick tee box only pony.  That wasn't a bad thing, but I found I sometimes needed more help at the top in the fairways beyond my 5W/7W.

When I found the Ping 440 MAX 4W, it solved those issues with better multi role flexibility.  With the slightly deeper face and 3W shaft length, it is very accurate and forgiving from both tee & fairway.  Also, with the adjustable tip I can leave it at 5W and crank it back to 4W if the course dictates more length.  It's so easy to hit that I added the 440 7W & 9W which take forgiveness and stability to amazing levels.  The Mini was good but is no longer needed.

How many scoring clubs, i.e. wedges, do you play? The only reason I ever played a mini driver was to add another club at the low end of my bag by removing my normal driver and 3 wood. When I played it, I played Mini, 2 hybrid, 4i-XW, Putter. I wouldn't consider using a mini driver any other way...well, unless I just kept all 17 clubs in the bag and didn't care, which I definitely did sometimes.

@Johnny Biarritz not sure who this question is directed to but I will bite. I have  50*, 54* and 58* and only carry 12 clubs total (mini driver included). Could probably shoot the same score and drop the 54*.

Mini, 7W, 5i - PW, 50, 54, 58, Putter.

After my 46 PW I go 50-54-60. Pretty happy with that set up. I feel like my 4 iron is redundant. I hit my 5 iron nearly as far.

4 wedges is good, my set gets weird because I play 5. I've seen guys though with 3 wedges, 48-54-60, then have a ton of stuff at the top end. I knew a guy once who had a 6 iron, then his 5 was a degree or two strong lofted with a 4 iron length shaft so there was less gap at the top end.

Driver: Elyte 9*

AI Smoke Mini 11.5*

Elyte 4 wood 16.5*

Mizuno Fli-Hi 3 iron 19*

4 Iron 22*

6 iron 26*

then 7-GW

The 4 wood is a great gap between the mini driver and irons.  It has enough distance off the deck to get me close on 95% of par 5's with a decent drive.

Also I ended up taking the 5 iron out as there wasn't a big enough gap between it and the 4/6 iron.  That gave me an extra spot to drop the driving iron in the bag which I absolutely love.

Hope this helps!

Then I roll into a combination of irons and hybrids.  I am currently playing 3 wedges.  I use my mini as an alternate tee club and for "inbetween" long shots where I value distance over accuracy.  My 7W is the longest club that I can trust for an approach shot to a green.  I have 3W's and 5W's but I am not skilled enough with them to make it worth being in the bag.  Recently I have thought about getting a Callaway UW or "super hybrid" to potentially fill the role of being longer than my 7W.

What distance do you hit a cut driver? Just curious as to me, a cut driver would likely go the same/similar distance as your draw thriver, and the UW would be within 5 off the tee of your cut thriver.

I have the R7 mini.  I CAN hit it off the deck with a good lie, but I rarely need to.

My next club is a 17 - 4 wood and then a 21 - 7 wood.  I cut the shaft down a smidge on the 7 wood and added a little weight to get my carry distance where I wanted it.

Then 5 iron.   The 17* 4 wood gives me an easy off the deck option that still goes a good distance with height, and the 7 wood is now 15 yards longer than my 5 iron.

TBH unless you are a top ranked am or on tour, none of those three (4w, 7w, 5i) clubs should you think about hitting close to the flag, it is a hit the green or close to the green, sure everyone once in awhile the stars align and you hit a shot inside of 20-25 feet, but it should never be expected.
