Ventus TR Blue vs HZRDUS Black 70

Recommended Posts

On my driver I currently have the Ventus TR Blue 5S shaft. At 58g I feel that this is too light more me and I am struggling with feels so have considered trying a heavier shaft.

I do not want to spend a ton of money just to try something out but I found a HZRDUS Black Gen 4 70 shaft (6.0 flex) on Ebay for a pretty good deal. I see that this shaft is a low launch/low spin shaft but other than that, how would it compare flex wise to my Ventus TR Blue 5S shaft?

Would this be a similar performance shaft to what I currently have? I am a 12 HCP and driver is by far my worst club so I am not good enough to notice tiny differences, but I thought for trying something at a heavier weight it was worth the price.

HZRDUS Black 70 is a beast, even in 6.0 flex. It will feel significantly heavier and stiffer, very hard to load. It may feel extremely stable depending on your swing, but my immediate concern would be distance loss. Inability to load/unload shaft and the extra weight coupled with extremely stiff tip section sounds to me like you're going to lose yards.

If you think the Blue is way too soft and way too light maybe the Black can work. IMO, you're jumping a bit too far up the stout scale. Maybe try a Ventus Black 6S before a Hzrdus 7S.

I have both shafts, but played Ventus TR Blue 5S for a few years.  What's unique is Black Gen 4 6.0 bend profile is more suited to my fast tempo only my best strikes, didn't like how it felt, so it didn't get much play.

The thing about TR Blue is its butt and ultra-stiff tip design allowed me to get past its softer butt section.  IME TR Blue and HZ-Black, even if similar weights, bend wise, are designed for different users.  Heavier may in theory work better, but the bend is a notable difference.  I say that having lightweight shafts and my ole favorite = Fujikura Fuel Tour Spec 60S, 65g.  Had it for out for 18 recently, boy, could I tell the difference by the end of the round?   I could still hit it 250+ but wasn't as effective around 15 on the back.  That's probably my #1 shaft since mid 2k.

Not a similar shaft to the Ventus TR Blue. I understand the wanting to try something a bit heavier (in the 60’s weight range), but the overall bend profiles are different and feel different. Honestly, you should go to ur local golf store (big box or otherwise) and search through the used drivers, or see if they will let you hit a few balls with whatever setup you want. Will allow you to find out if you like something a bit heavier.

I have played both shafts but in different weight/flex combos than the ones you mentioned. I think the Hzrdus Black Gen 4 is a solid shaft for the price, and for being a low/low profile it is relatively smooth. With that said, the Ventus TR is simply different. If weight is the variable you are focused on, I would either get crafty with some lead tape or look for a blue TR 6S in the classifieds/eBay. Trying to assess results strictly due to weight while comparing across shafts that have different bend profiles will introduce more variables. For what its worth, I transitioned from the 60ish gram range and bought a heavier (79g) blue TR and have gotten much better results. It may be worth splurging on the heavier shaft (like a blue TR 6S) and selling your 5S to offset the cost but everybody's experiences will vary!

Yeah this is what I am leaning towards. I do like the feel and bend profile of the TR it just feels much too light. Was trying to find a way around paying the $350 for it but it’s looking like that may be the case. Time to say goodbye to my old Taylormade M4s to cover the cost…

With the disclaimer that I don’t generally like the feel of Ventus shafts except for the Red, — and for my money I’d take the older Speeder TR over a Ventus TR — I’d say look at Mitsubishi and something like a Diamana TB 70.

Blueboard profile, heavier than what you have but very smooth, easy to load. Was a $350 shaft upon release and it is still very popular with players who know it, but can be found for decent prices if you look around.

Denali Black is a much closer to match to TR Blue. I would give that a try before Hzrdus Black.

One thing you could try with your TR blue before moving on is adding 10 grams of lead tape to the underside of the shaft at the 14” fulcrum just below the grip (might not even need that or may feel like you need more - good opportunity to test). Will keep the swing weight the same for the test. I’ve also seen people add it at the point of the shaft where the club balances on your finger or in rings below the grip and/or just above the hosel. Those positions would have a swing weight effect in addition to static shaft weight increase and would be a good second, separate test after making a determination on final best weight.

I’ve found this is a great way to test using the same shaft profile that you like before making another random change. I currently have an additional 10 grams on my 3 wood shaft and use black mechanical tape to cover it to prevent any issue with bag chatter or pulling off. Legal to play with as long as you don’t alter it during play, similar to hosel adjustments.
