Gt2 driver - lowering spin with hotmelt?

Recommended Posts

Anyone had any success lowering the spin a couple hundred revs on the gt2 via hotmelt?   The gt2 was much more stable than the gt3 for me, just sat about 2-300 revs too high.  Lofting down brought launch too low.

@Valtiel - seems like this might be something your expertise and experience could be helpful on?

It would be worth checking out this Cool Clubs video, they tested swapping front/back weights on the ZXi LS and Wilson LS drivers and saw maybe a couple hundred revs difference. I think they are both about 6g difference in position which would be about what you could take out of the back of the GT2 with a stock 9g weight installed.

I did this with my TSR2 where I simply dropped the rear weight by 5g and added that back via hotmelt lower and more forward in the head. I didn't have a measured spin number I was looking to change though, I was merely eyeballing it knowing that it definitely wasn't spinning too little and I wanted the feel/sound of hotmelt. Knowing the approximate MOI of the TSR2 I knew that amount of weight movement wouldn't push anything into a weird place. If I could change anything though I might cheat the hotmelt a little more towards the toe due to my strike pattern.

But yeah, that is what i'd recommend and you can try it with lead tape first.

Johnny Wunder from the Fully Equipped Podcast mentioned just this on one of his most recent podcast/ videos about how the pros who are using the GT2 do certain "things" to reduce its spin.

Those certain "things" are adding weight to the front of the head (and bias it toe, heel or neutral).  So yes, add hotmelt to the front, while reducing the back weight.  I would start with the following:

1. Get your preferred Swing weight with just the back weight installed.

2. Lets say the back weight is 10g and your Swing Weight is spot on, reduce the weight by half and re add it with hotmelt in the front of the head.

3.  Test the new 50/50 setup and see what it does for your numbers.

4. keep reducing and adding as necessary.

Just know, you will hit a point if you add to much weight to the front you will see a decrease in MOI or forgiveness of the GT2 and heading into the GT3 territory.

You can also test this with Lead tape, although its ugly and wasteful, it still works as a test.

For what its worth, I am putting a GT2 in the bag this week, and may very well be in the same boat as you.. Ill report back with what I find I needed to do if anything.  I am coming from the QI10LS which is a bomber, but just a hair to unforgiving for my off days.

Keep us posted.  I have a head and haven’t done anything with it for various reasons.  I was thinking 5 grams front and mid to mid toe side.

Just a word of caution.   Moving weight around is fine to play with but you don't want to change the total head weight just for the sake of tweaking spin.    Total head weight should be fit for feel, dispersion, face impact consistency, face control and other timing issues - not launch and spin.

Another thing to try is playing with tee height since impact location on the face has the biggest influence on spin.  You only need something like ~3/16" (+/- 1/8") of movement higher on the face to get what you want.

Agree.  I’m not adding total weight, just moving some of total weight forward and potentially toe side.

So 9 holes in the bag so far with the GT2 9* - Although Ive been building and repairing clubs since 1996, I am not a launch Monitor kinda guy.. Plus I don't fit people nor do work for anyone unless I know them well.  Im old school feel player, and know what I want to see.

With that out of the way here is where I am at.

60 gram Evenflow Riptide LX Proto shaft, no tipping, playing at 45" to EOG (I play a 44.5" driver, so I left wiggle up top so I can tip it if needed)

After a short driving range session followed by 9 holes, I am at D4 SW with 3 grams of led tape near the front toe just under the Titleist logo.  B1 setting, as I like to see a flat lie angle.  Im catching the ball center-heal about 1/4" high off dead center (not CG center)

The flight is in my window that I like to see, approximately 115 feet peak with penetrating angle of decent (not dropping out of the sky). I play Central East coast courses that are not maintained well, so roll out is minimal (always), unless I play a course that cost $100 a round, a round here.

Forgiveness is night and day compared to my previous gamer, QI10 LS 9*, and my 5 year love affair with the one before Cobra F8+ 9*.  I can miss this a driver about 1/2 laterally and the end result is very similar.

I was worried, because I tested a TSR3 early this year and hated the way it felt although it produced some great drives.

I think I play it for several more rounds and see what needs to be changed.. At this point, possibly tipping a .5" based on feel and timing.. These Evenflow Riptides are great, but feel a little loose compared to my OG PX HZRDUS shafts which Ive gamed for a log time.

This probably doesn't help anyone, but I did promise to follow up 🙂

EDIT: Forgot to mention, it was windy'ish today, steady 10 mph, with gust above that.  Lots of shots into crosswinds and into the wind.  So I had a good opportunity to see what the ball does in non optimal conditions.  The ball heals its line very well.  My preferred shape is a fall over baby fade (10 yards), and even with a left to right wind I was able to keep it in play.

Putting hot melt up near the face and then using a lighter back weight should definitely lower spin. That’s the secret formula for the Qi10/Qi35 Dot drivers.

I had a GT2 but ultimately moved on from it for the same reason.
