Tiger Woods 1998 Scotty Cameron Putter? Cisco & Disney

Wanted to share something that may interest the Tiger gearheads. While reviewing photos from the 1998 Cisco World Match Play and the National Car Rental Classic at Disney, I noticed Tiger using a Scotty Cameron Newport II-style putter that doesn’t match any of the commonly documented models from that era. It appears to be a carbon steel Pro Platinum prototype with a slightly different neck position, flat-faced hosel cup, and deeper shoulder drop—characteristics that align with Tiger’s preferences but not with his more widely known GSS gamer or TeI3. The shape and finish are consistent in both events, suggesting it was in the bag for a stretch that fall.

This could be one of the final iterations before he committed to the GSS gamer in 1999. Given how much Tiger experimented with his putter in 1998, especially on Bermuda greens, this model may have been a transitional piece that hasn’t been publicly documented. If anyone has more insight, additional photos, or has seen a similar model surface in a collection, I’d be interested in connecting the dots.

Rocking that same blacked out Ping grip on my Betti. Don’t think I’ll ever change away from it.

That summer he borrowed O'Meara's back-up Anser 2, so it may have been something made to be even more Anser 2-ey than a regular Newport 2 in order to satisfy his sponsors.

Appreciate the feedback - after digging a bit more, it looks like this may actually be the same putter that Golden Age sold last month.

The TIGER stamping, neck shape, and overall finish look identical. Definitely seems like one of the transitional prototypes from late ’98 before Tiger fully committed to the GSS gamer. Curious if anyone knows the backstory on how that example made it to auction.

It was Mark O’Meara’s backup. I watched a doc where O’Meara told Tiger something along the lines of, Go get one for yourself.. this is a backup for a reason.

Edit: Didn’t think he borrows O’Meara’s Ping, thought it was a Scotty Cameron.

I went to the Open that year and saw it up close.

I don't think O'Meara used it often, as it still had the Ping shaft band and even the original stencilling on the shaft.

Yeah, he used an Anser 2-style at times in ’98. I think this Scotty was built to mimic that shape probably made for him during all the testing he was doing that year.
