Building my dream combo-set, P7TW-P7MC-P770? Can clubs be bent to actually fit?

Hello.

 

Im thinking of buying myself something of a dream set but I will need to combo it with their more forgiving brothers in the longer irons. The problems that arrives comes with loft if you actually want to play "Tiger loft" and since I actually think that will blunt the leading edge a tiny bit and make them even more playable in the short irons, thats what I want to do but, can they actually be bent that much (3,5 degree for most of them)?

 

Considering the lofts we have

4i - pref P770 bent 3,5 which IS a 5i in the family

5i - pref P770 3,5 weak, 6i is the same loft

6i - P7MC bent 3,5 weak

7i - P7MC bent 3 weak

 

In another perfect world, I would weld and restamp the soles of the other irons and I dont have to worry about bending them, but considering what this is going to cost in the end I would prefer it to be as perfect as possible, including visuals.

 

Could I probably not bend them as much and it would make it easier? Probably, but in a world of trying to make things perfect, I would ask this first.

Could you do it?  Yes

the mcs are ill probaly be okay.  They will have zero offset maybe even onset.

 

the p770 are hollow and already launch high.  Bending them weak like that might make they flight too high unless you are a very low dynamic loft pkayer

Thats a bummer. 

 

So for this to work, I would have to either play the "wrong irons P770" or go MC all the way down and preferably stop at 2 degrees weak for MCs?

Simple answer is yes. Honest answer is every time i see someone do a frankenstein set they complain about continuity in:  turf interaction, flight windows, club weight feels, etc. then they go for sale like 2 months after build.

Would you say this is the case if I skipped the P770 part as well? 

 

I kinda missed out on the P7MC lofts tho, I expected them to be the same as the CBs but are more traditional with 34* 7 iron so lofts would be 2+ if thats the case. I know the MCs are kinda heavy heads if I remember correctly, not sure how P7TWs are.

At base level. Yes, im pretty sure taylormade if you ask them will say changing loft 3 degrees will completely change sole geometry which will affect strike location then ball flight etc  etc etc.

Not saying you are wrong but on Taylormades own charts from say a P770-P790 combo, the 6i-7i are bent 2 degrees weak. However, they are probably more interested in pushing gear than anything else. Still, it would make the long irons more playable in MCs than TWs...

My buddy tried to frankenstein 3 models of mizunos 2 years ago. Went custom fit and had it all weighed measured etc etc. lasted 2 rounds and parted them out for sale.

Can it be done? Sure, VJ does that with his Mizuno irons. However, it will add quite a bit of bounce.

Here’s a suggestion….get the irons….hit all of them to find out what exactly the carry distances are for each iron.  THEN adjust lofts appropriately.  But yes…you may find yourself with, for example, two 6 irons in the bag.  But if that is what gives you the best gapping for YOUR game…who cares?

Consider less bending and more changes in length.  And, carrying 2 of the same numbered iron.
