I love the ts2 in the 21.

My concern with a hybrid at 24 is it getting spinny. That's why I'd go tsr3 there...

Makes sense. How do your numbers look with the TSR3?

For me hybrids are better than irons. I use ping g30 4, 5 & 6 hybrids and I can't think of an instance where an iron would be better.

Nice. I think my only worry is that left miss that can creep in with hybrids, or that if during winter I would prefer to be able to hit it lower off the tee to keep it out of the wind, but I think the forgiveness and consistency gains more than make up for this. I can always keep my 4i around as required too.

Hep, 5 hybrid to the 6 iron.

Nice. My initial 5 brid testing gaps more to my 4 iron, so will slot in a bit higher for me.

I have a mini driver too that I carry 🙂

driver

mini (13.5*)

5 wood

4 iron

26* hybrid

6-PW

LW

Putter

it works for me! Mini is 245-280. 4 iron is for when there’s trouble starting at 250.

Nice, makes sense. You don't find yourself ever with a gap that requires you to hit 4 off the deck?

Good data to read. My 7i is 118.2, 5847 spin not sure on height but would guess a little low. I definitely need to get in the lab and on the monitor and get some numbers.

On point 1, totally agree. I have never gotten on with Fairway Woods and have only recently become a hybrid guy after putting the Qi35 in the bag. I have always played a GI - ish 4 iron which doesn't match my set just to give me some extra juice, so the hybrid probably isn't that big of a jump.

Point 2 - great exercise and definitely something I've done previously when looking at the 3 iron slot for the 4 hybrid that went in the bag. Same looks for clubs is so important to me and would definitely match the other one in my bag. Time to hit the course!

5800 is reasonable for a modern lofted 7i. As long as your peak height is >90, you have plenty of stopping power.

I love the workability of hybrids too. I can hit a draw and add half a club, hit a cut and reduce half a club on each hybrid.

I’m a huge fan of the Titleist hybrids. The “3” line is extremely iron like and adjustable to whatever your miss is with the weight port in the front.

Another reason why I like the TSR3 hybrid. Titleist’s surefit + weight port means you can make it extremely fade biased if you want to. I go:

TSR2 3H (17*) - 225-235

TSR3 4H (21*) - 205-210

TSR3 5H (25*) - 190-195

No woods in the bag as driver is 260-275 and my chances of hitting a green at 240 as a 10 handicap are slim as it is. I’d rather have tight yardage gaps down the bag. Just a personal opinion, but I am not a fan of 5-6* gaps down the bag, so I use the extra club to go with 4 degree gaps in all irons and wedges.

Yeah for sure. Appreciate the insight my friend and definitely need to start experimenting with hitting some different shapes with my hybrid.

I can hit a slightly choked down cut with a driver and it will go 240. Probably should hit it more since my handicap is basically all made up by losing balls off the tee.

Currently undergoing another experiment to play a mini driver shaft in driver and add some head weight. In general, I have a problem with playing really long shafts. For example, my TSR 3H cut down goes a similar distance to my previous Paradym Triple Diamond 3W at full length. Swing speed is down, but efficiency is up.

I picked up a cheap RBZ 5 hybrid off marketplace about a month ago, stock shaft, not my preferred grip, but man it has become a favorite almost instantly. Long par 3s, par 5 second shots to a wedge number, it really is point and shoot.

If you have the swing speed/angle of attack for it, the one length hybrids are cheat codes compared to irons. I go from 6i to OL 5h & if I could find one that would gap right, I would do away with the 6i.

Not for me, but definitely an interesting concept. I am surprised that OL hasn't been more popular with newer golfers, seems an easy way to get into the game.

I'm weird, but I carry:

- 5w

- 4 iron (23* 500u Titleist)

- 6 Hybrid (26*, Titleist Tsi1)

- 6 iron (29*)

I'm 112ss. Here's the reasoning. I hit the ball low. The 4 iron is for off the tee (220-240). I often have 185-210 into greens. Whether it's on a par 5 after a good drive. A long par 4, or a par 4 after a bad drive into the rough, or a long par 3. That 185-210 range comes up often for me and I want to ensure I can get the ball up, and a mishit ends up somewhere close to pin high in the rough. That's where the 26* hybrid comes in. Much more accurate than the 5 iron coming into a green. Just my .02!

Josh

Does it work? Yes? Not weird!

I’ve found that if just depends on conditions. Never carry traditional 4 iron anymore. Generally 4h at 22-23 degree. Also long since carried 5h (26) but alternate with 5 Crossover (24) when it’s very windy. Likewise alternate between 6h and 6i depending on the wind because my 6h probably flies twice as high.

I haven’t found much difference between iron and equivalent hybrid, but the consistency is massive. Most important the gap between best and worse is vastly different with hybrid.

in the past I have gone D, 17.5 FW, 20H and found room for Rapture DI at 18 degree for specialist shots.

I made the move to a 5 hybrid last year. When I got my new Mizuno 925 forged, I started at 6 iron. Much more consistent with the hybrid than I was with my 5 iron. I go Driver 5 wood turned down to play like a 4 wood and 4/5 hybrids

Did the same, had a 4H already but needed more consistency and separation from 6i to 5i, so went with 5H.
Unfortunately, I fight serious hooks with the hybrid, especially the 5H. I now ordered 21° and 24° utility irons to find out if that works better.
I strongly suggest considering this factor.

I've been peering down this path lately too.

Coming from a slightly different world, I am looking at a GT3 24deg to replace my 5i 23 deg in my single length Avoda set. I'm fortunate enough to have the speed to be able to gap the 5i and 6i at 37" well enough, but I will still only see about 80 feet apex out of the 5i. I've used a 23deg Utility Iron in that spot before and it worked very well, with the exception of off the turf. A hybrid head will be more versatile there.

I want to try:

6i-LW Single length

GT3 5h 24deg

7w

5w

Mini

Driver

I'm looking at the GT3 because of it's iron-like feel with the ease of a hybrid. Are there other models with the smaller head like the GT3?

Though I do have to say, five headcovers is a bit much. The hybrid may have to sit naked in my bag.

Just wondering if anyone has much experience dropping the 4 iron, and whether you liked the move? I've currently got a P770 in the 4 iron slot and often wonder if moving to a hybrid would be that much of a difference anyway.

Circa 2018, I had a bag "anchored in 4." I carried a 4W, a 4H and a 4i; 7W was also in the long-end mix. I only had three wedges.

The irons were Tour Edge CB Pro Tungstens. The 4i was a bit iffy, so I had it refit with a lighter hybrid shaft and gained an excellent driving iron, and an off-the-fairway club for shots into the wind.

Circa 2022, I got Mavrik Max irons (see sig line), and picked up a half-club distance over CBs. Also I learned to hit a stinger with a 4H, so I decided to not carry a 4i. With Max irons carrying longer, a 4i would have come fairly close to 4H yardage.

In your case, you might consider soft-stepping the 4i, or going with a lighter shaft. This would smooth out your swing, and improve launch. And, a 4i would likely keep your ball lower than a 5H.

For me the bruising of my ego went away when I started making much better contact and hitting the ball longer with more consistency.  I replaced the 5 iron with a 5 hybrid  and now am thinking of replacing that with a 9 wood.  At 68 I have come to the conclusion that the more brains than balls approach serves me well.

Who makes a small head 5 hybrid?

I went with the PXG version 6 and absolutely love them.   I went into the fitting saying I want a 210-215 club (4 HY) and a 190-205 club.   We worked for 1.5 hours trying to find the right shaft that produces the height, spin and distance.   Once you find that combo it is outstanding.    My hybrids have become my favorite weapons and there is no way I am as consistent with irons.   I have the speed but just decided to make my long game easier.    I am debating on a 6 iron next since it is so easy.

Best thing I found was identify the gap I need and go get fit to that number.   Plus, PXG hybrids are adjustable so you can tweak slightly to lower the traj on windy days.   I have two settings that I use dependent on weather conditions.

I run 4 and 5 hybrid, and they're actually some of my favorite clubs in the bag. Super easy to hit and consistent on flight and distance.

Me too. My game from 185-215 (at sea level) has improved 1000% since dropping the 4 and 5 iron.

Just dropped a 4i and replaced it with a 5 hyb this season and it’s been an incredible change for me.  Never have been a hybrid fan, historically loved long irons.  Just decided to put the ego aside and force myself to learn to play a hybrid effectively and it has made that part of the bag so much easier.

Use what works for you, no pictures or videos on the scorecard.

I’m giving myself another 3-4 months of practice with the 5 iron and if my consistency doesn’t improve I’m going 5h too.

I'm not really near the speed of OP. Heck, his 4i is a slow driver swing for me. I have had a 5hy in the bag for a long time now.

I had a 5 iron built to match my irons that I got previously, but I just get better results with the 5hy. Plus, like others have mentioned, it has a pretty large yardage range with good flight. I can use a smoother swing with it and it's 150 carry and step on it to get to 170 or a little more. It's probably the closest thing to a favorite club for me.
