Non-Tour Players with a Circle T

When you see a non-tour player with a circle T, do you think Naff, or do you think Cool?

I personally love it when I see these being gamed, but after chatting with a few guys at the club I'm not sure the viewpoint is shared by everyone.

For me it depends, if it’s someone that’s a good putter then usually I respect that and it’s cool in my opinion. If it’s someone that’s a poor putter doing it to “look good” then I think naff. This is regardless of handicap as well.

Played with a guy a couple of years ago in Florida that had a circle T and was possibly the best player I’ve played with, full bag of Titleist clubs. Was more impressed with his playing than his putter.

Was it a Newport 2 CT with a site dot on the topline instead of a line on the flange?

IYKYK. I have a Circle T 009-M as a mid-capper. I am not some chump golfer, but no superstar. When I game my Circle T, people who know what it is will bring it up.  It is not a clout thing—as a practical matter, it is an exceptional putter and I do putt very well with it.

End of the day, it is just a putter. Love having it in the stable. YMMV.

Same here, love seeing them on the course, and I'm not going to judge a guy for gaming one, do what makes you happy. I'm not a collector of anything for the sake of hanging it on a wall and staring at it. Have a half dozen or so putters, but they all get used.

Truthfully, when I see a Circle T out on the course, most are pretty ho hum generic, basically the same as retail, but with the tour cherry bomb stamping. Seems like a pretty lazy way for Cameron to uncharge basically what is a stock putter for $3k. I prefer seeing the small batch Toulons or one off boutique putters out in the wild more than the Circle Ts.

Hard to know how a person got one without asking. Could have gotten one from a friend or family member who was good enough to get a few, maybe it was a dream putter and they saved up for it, or they have insane amounts of money so a CT is nothing for them financially.

As for seeing them on course it's good to see, they're meant to be played but I totally understand why someone may not want to bring a CT to a course.

I don’t think much about it unless the player is going on and on about this putter.

its kinda of like endo forging, fonts on irons, crossfit, or paleo, or vegan, or gluten free.  No issues with the thing itself, but sometimes the insufferable conversation around it is annoying.

Never really cared what anyone else has in their bag.

I bought a tour rat from our Titleist rep in college for 600 bucks in 2006.  Sold it 3 years back and bought a car 🤣

Never had anyone question me about the putter when I played it.

This. If I see a player playing well I may then be interested to see his technique and gear. Otherwise don’t really pay attention to what’s in the bag

Wasn’t it Gary Player that bought a putter at a garage sale for about $5 and went on to win a handful of tournaments (including majors) with it? As the old saying goes “it’s the artist, not the brush”.

Jim Furyk did it with a Yes Sophie bought in MA.

There are a lot of ways to get a circle t whether it be that you are top amateur golfer, are friends with a tour pro or a member of the Scotty Cameron fitting/sales team, or even got lucky enough to find one at a Play It Again Sports (yes, this has really happened). If this is the case, why not game it? I played with a guy at a public course gaming a circle T Phantom 5.5 that looked exactly like the JT putter from back in the day. The guy was a casual golfer (probably a 15 handicap) and had no idea what the putter was. Ended up that it was a retirement gift from a family friend that played on the asian tour. Why fault the guy for having a cool friend and a cool putter?! For what it's worth, I rolled a few and it was no different than a stock model aside from some cool stamping and a sweet headcover.

There are also folks who shell out $3k-$4k to buy one from a retailer. While this doesn't bother me at all (no different than ponying up for a luxury watch) I suppose I can see how some may gripe at this.

The reality is that Scotty Cameron has been around for a long time and there are a lot of circle ts on the market. As the years go by, it will become more and more likely you'll see these in the hands of us average joes.

My gripe isn’t people buying them or using them, it’s when someone has to brag they have one and they’re a poor putter. They’ve bought it to pose not actually for their game. The old “all the gear and no idea”.

I have Circle T timeless and game it weekly. The way I justified it was I could go buy an OTR which would probably lose half its value in 5 years but  the circle T has almost certainly gone up in the same amount of time. Hasn't really cost me any money. Like buying a good stock. Only going to go up. Just one opinion.

Should anyone be troubled over what clubs someone else has in their golf bag?  Bothered because a 20 HDCP Japanese executive has a $45,000 set of golf clubs?  Bothered because someone has a $100,000 or $200,000 sports car but can't double clutch using heel & toe or clip the apex in turn 9?   Bothered because someone has a $20,000 painting in their entryway but doesn't  know how to paint or draw?   OK to have a $600,000 yacht and have to hire a Captain to sail it yet he's a putz because he has a Circle T?

If you're a og wrx'r you were geeking to have any real prototype or tour issued clubs. I was 18 in 2006 and its all i wanted. Played a 970 3 wood and tour issued 905r in a first tee pebble beach qualifier Lol. ended up grabbing a circle t on ebay a few years ago under 2k. It was always talks amongst our friends that we'd own one. It was very nostalgic to play with it and to fulfill a dream. Wouldn't ever own one if it wasn't for golfWRX and stumbling across one on ebay. Its a Rolex of putters, it tells time like any other watch. But its a flex for the IYKYK players.

Love em or hate em, if you’re smart about, it’s one of the few pieces of equipment in golf you can use and still sell down the road for a profit or break even. Market is changing, but I’m not sure there is much else out there in golf equipment that has been as reliable over time.

Yup.

I think that’s starting to change since there are so many circle ts out there now.  They used to be snatched up pretty quick for asking prices.  Now they go for significantly less than listed prices in most cases.

I rarely saw one in the wild up until about 2020 ish, now I see them once a month maybe and my golf demographic hasn’t changed
