I really want to be happier for Scottie as he’s obviously a great guy but he’s just so relentlessly dull! 😴

He's dull for sure. Just look at the power of marketing and branding to see how mediocre players can draw big bucks, and top players can command mega bucks. Don't want the extra cash, or don't want the celeb spotlight?, that's a personal choice.

Aside from your oversimplification of things, it’s not always what you say, but how you say it.  Ya know?

Welcome to the forum.

As such, my grad school rhetoric class continues to serve me well all these years later.

Be nice to see a little excitement or emotion considering what he’s achieving, no?

I actually really respect his comments about his family being more important to him than his sporting success but a little more energy and excitement would be nice, just my humble opinion.

You right…but having lived through the Tiger era of Chinese trick shots over 18 holes was EXHAUSTING🤪

I've been a volunteer a couple times at the US Open. Not only don't you get paid, you have to pay them.

And it is totally worth it.

Before arriving there is a free volunteer party often w raffles. Don’t forget the free training, quick tour and introduction to your leaders/capt.

You typically pay $200-1000usd to get a vol pkg. 2025 Ryder is 1000. Majors/FedEx playoffs are higher.

2018 Shinnecock was $350+ but rose quite a bit more than inflation for 2026.

You get high end clothing specific to that tournament in special colors different than a mfgr in merch tent. Usually 1or2 polo and light rain resistant out wear. Lately reusable water bottle sometimes cheap but can be Hydro flask/Artic. Post 9/11, a clear carry bag is included to get through security and manage the day moving from parking to vol tent check-in to working shift.

Worth it, all depends what your function is, if you like doing it and when.

Some positions you see ZERO golf. Some duties are done before and/or after the tournament. Other positions you will interact with pros/team members/vips.

More common are only golf at one position for entire shift half day (morning vs afternoon) or might be rotated every 30min-2hr.

Get to course early before play/practice/pro-am starts and some form of breakfast, usually continental, is in the vol tent. Do refill water bottle, grab whatever free drinks are available (bottled water, sodas, sometimes juice) before leaving for shift.

Remember esp. for non-majors, tournament is a fundraiser for local charities. Usually 2+million is raised yearly.

Gotta say as someone who once found Scheff really borrrinnng

He ain’t boring no more!

Guy is kicking the crap out of everything in his way like TW and Jack.

Wanna see if he keeps running this hot for another year and then what happens next.

Even TW and Jack had periods of off years so that would be expected. But SS so good that if he just keeps up his practice regiment, his game is such that there should be a lot more to come over the long haul.

All of those points are your opinion and I respectfully disagree.

He comes over as merely ticking PR tick boxes with zero emotion or gravitas.

My biggest issue is his total lack of any engagement with the gallery watching him. He never acknowledges their cheers, applause or congratulations whatsoever or even smiles.

He lacks warmth and isn’t in the least bit relatable in my view.

And to be honest I found his remarks this week about how just how unfulfilling his golf career or success is to him rather unsavoury and dismissive.

Many of those characteristics are on the spectrum issues so I wonder…As an older dude I should know having lived it. However the family stuff and Jesus aren’t characteristic unless family is seen by him as his “safe place”.

I just don’t know how you can be a golf person and not find the way Scottie works the ball to be mesmerizing. In a world of bomb and gougers, Scottie is hitting slingshot draws, power cuts that start OB and somehow end up in perfect position, and flighted wedges to pinpoint precision. And he’s doing this under the most immense pressure imaginable. Yesterday he hit a 7 iron on a par 3 with a 4 iron trajectory. Why? Because he has that shot.

Can't remember what hole it was, but him swapping out clubs and moving to the other side of the tee box today after his initial read was Peak Scottie.

There are stupid people getting out of bed every morning. You just have to find them!

You have to view it as, are you already going to the tournament? If yes, this is a way cheaper method to go.

Get selected to the right position, you’ll see way more, get inside access/news, what isnt being said in the news/social media/golfwrx and avoid most of the crowds.

A few positions have contact w pros. Do act right and I’ve seen others and gotten plenty of autographs, signed balls, tour towels, other one off swag, etc.

I’ve gotten and given away a lifetime of tournament/tour/pro stuff that make for unbelievable gifts.

Have experience or leader who trust you then you can be inside the ropes, see witb for yourself, do actual the scoring, and/or walk all 18 w an assigned group.

Would you have liked to walked Royal Portrush today w Scottie/Li and have been w/in 50ft the entire round? You hear basically everything the group is saying from strategy to chit chat. Want to be in know BEFORE tv for every shot and anytime rules officials are called over?

In some positions, TV/PGA radio/etc. are asking you for information that is relayed onward. Every tournament, volunteers are doing it every round.

Definitely memories for a lifetime. Almost all you can’t see on TV or maybe it’s your only time you are on tv, so I’ve told or shown pics later.

It's called bartering. In turn for volunteering ~20 hours at next year's US Open the volunteers get a ticket package worth about $1,200. That's $60/hour. I wouldn't do it but I can see how it's a good value proposition for many.

You actually get your id which gets an entire week of free parking. USGA doesn’t usually separate Vols from public.

Free grounds and volunteer tent access for week. In 2018 Shinnecock tickets ranged from $100+ to $400/day before nys 8% taxes +parking usually 20-50/daily.

You usually have to commit to working at least 4 4or8hr shifts. For some positions we are all day shifts.

When you work, you get a free meal, in vol tent or at concessions, typical value is $25-35. Vol tent meals are catered and commonly what tour staff/vips get to eat. Usually worth it if your shift hrs are compatible or are close to vol tent, most aren’t.

All free drinks, breakfast, snacks and other special unannounced deals.

If I volunteered, I'd be stuck in the parking lot.

There is no vol in the parking lot thats a contracted outside agency.

The basic equivalent is working the merchandise tent. You only see golf on tv but you are in AC and get deals on merchandise.

Got to meet Phil’s father, Tiger’s mom, multiple announcers like Jim & Gary and other celebs.

Or be at entrance/exit or information booths. No golf and no tv. At least you know where to go and have the map and/or pairing sheets
