While I don’t think Scheffler is suuuper exciting, I wouldn’t use Tiger as an example of excitement.  Outside of the dozen or so epic shots he’s famous for, Tiger won the same way: monotonous, precise execution.  Fairways and greens, deadly putting.  And Tiger was just about the most ‘robotic, phony, corporate speak, don’t say anything of note’ interview after most of his tournaments.  Who cares though.  As a fan, all I care about is the golf.

 

Both of these guys were/are assassins and should be judged on their play on the course.  The rest is just noise.

Scottie bored me into doing afternoon errands. To bad we have to wait until September for additional worthy golf and next year for a major. The PGA last stop in August should come back into rotation.

Youtube gives a better insight into pro golfer personalties than when they are working on Sunday afternoons. I wasn't a fan of several of these guys until watching them off the course.

I enjoyed the World Feed (the combination of Ali Whitaker, Tony Johnstone and Nico Colsaerts worked well together ie entertaining and no quick listening-fatigue)

 

… for folks with access to both NBC/Peacock vs World Feed … would be nice interested to hear your comparison… I just hear complaints re NBC… but they can’t be that bad, no?

I've not only paid to volunteer, I'm also a Patron level member of the USGA, a strong supporter of what they do for the game. Also? Over the years I've hosted guys playing on the KF Tour (though at the time it was called the Nationwide), LPGA pros, and even guys playing amateur college events. All of it cost me money - but I don't just play golf now and then, I love the sport, and support it.

 

And BTW? I got to meet a lot of other volunteers at the US Opens I worked. Almost to the person, they were pretty fanatic golfers (weekenders, casual golfers generally don't volunteer, in fact a lot of them probably wouldn't even know that you can volunteer). Serious golfers actually understand the value. It is about the experience. You can watch golf on TV. You can even get tickets to go see a tourney live as a spectator. Being a volunteer, however, is different. Yeah, you get some cool swag and perks, and open access to the tourney when you aren't working (in terms of just money, it is well worth it) but there is something much bigger than that. it is being part of a tournament. And that is an almost inexpressible feeling - most especially at a major.

 

BTW, you are unlikely to understand it, but the volunteer positions for next year's US Open are already filled - a year ahead of time. All that is left is a waitlist. If you do not grasp why so many serious golfers act that "stupid", you are saying a lot more about yourself than you are about the volunteers.

They tell even tour pro's that they must hit one shot shape and trajectory when the dominant player is doing the opposite (never mind that almost all the great players shaped it both ways even if they had a preferred stock shape e.g. Nicklaus, Woods, Tiger, Phil, Hogan all moved it around).

SS isn’t a bomb n gouger. He’s plenty long enough and swings w/in himself. Typical swing keeps some power in reserve only for special situations.

This adds to his accuracy but keeps up w the longer hitters.

Throw in the shot making and ball flighting, no wonder he’s always top ranked on shots gained approach.

Guess I’ve been volunteering longer or more than you. Most tournaments, I’ve worked had an option to direct your hours to support a named/write-in charity when registering.

As the non-majors are big fundraisers for local/regional charities, raising $2+ to 7million/yr, have met an innumerable # of Vols there to support a charity. Thats how I started volunteering to help a charity.

Have seen many tournaments have rl large groups 100-1000 of Vols come out to support their charity. Sometimes they’re rl easy to spot as they all sit in vol tent or work together.

 

To a volunteer, all have been great to met and work together. The stories and retelling of amazing situations and “war story” occurrences that never make tv, radio or golfwrx.

 

You will likely meet a fascinating array of people from all walks of life. Not all are golfers but all have story to tell and knowledge to pass on. Some Vols who are golfers have become future foursomes and playing partners.

 

Warning if you’re not careful you might end up volunteering or promoted for even more tournaments and or playing courses you never got to play before.
