He couldn’t even stay in Portrush Sunday night and have a party

Guess he had to go back to Dallas on a private jet so he doesn’t miss out on the notorious short Texas Summer and the 98 degree humid weather

Hold the plane and maybe enjoy the pubs in Belfast and leave at 3am from the airport at the very least

Why wouldn’t he want to stay a couple of days in the one of the greatest areas on Planet Earth and have some fun savouring the victory and exploring the area and relaxing away from the course

The Antrim Coast is up there with the great spots such as :

The walk from Bondi to Coogee Beach

The coastline and drive or water taxi to Portofino

The area around Portrush either direction is just as cool as 17 mile drive  with nice some nice beach towns, sightseeing and pubs along the way

No offence but unless he is going to Hooters in Dallas 🙂 and I suspect he isn’t - that city is far behind other places in Texas such as San Antonio, Austin and Fort Worth

anyone acting like Fort Worth and San Antonio are great cities doesn't know what they're talking about lol

Very, very true.

The typical neoteric, content-consuming younger "my life is fueled by social media" golf fan wants to see a bombastic winner.  They simply can't process watching a player methodically execute a final round.

Oh, dear @Ferguson, we're always learning something with you.  Neoteric-neoteric-neoteric-neoteric.  Trying lo learn it by heart for a future post.

Don’t tell tiger that.

He never liked his swing, it was the reason for constant swing changes and regular swing coach changes.

He would be the first to tell you he kept “getting stuck” as Haney detailed in the big miss.

Tiger changed his swing many times prior to Hank Haney…

but it was never about aesthetics… it was about performance or injury/physical limitations.

for example after the 1997 masters he said this:

“One night, a week or so later, after the elation had started to die down, I decided to sit down and watch a tape of the entire tournament. I was by myself, so I was really able to concentrate on critiquing my full swing to see if there was some flaw I might be able to work on. I didn’t see one flaw. I saw about 10.”

His explanation was simple but profound: “I needed to tighten my swing if I was going to have a chance of winning them [other majors]. Timing took me a long way at Augusta, but I couldn’t rely on such timing week in and week out.”

But every version of Tigers swing “looked” better than Scottie’s in my opinion.

im just saying if we have to watch a guy hit 20-30 shots on TV, ill take the prettier looking swing.

except maybe Tigers swing under Sean Foley—- I still grimace at that.

lol a dozen? You mean 1,200?

I’m talking about the dozen of so epic shots that make the highlights every time.  Tiger didn’t hit shots like those during every tournament.  He was long, straight, and putted great during his best years.  Just like Scotty.  And he said even less, way less, in his interviews than Scotty did.  Once Tiger hit the jackpot, his interviews were like listening to a corporate PR man respond to questions about a product defect he didn’t want to discuss.

You may not see any value in it - but being insulting only makes you look foolish.

I've not only paid to volunteer, I'm also a Patron level member of the USGA, a strong supporter of what they do for the game. Also? Over the years I've hosted guys playing on the KF Tour (though at the time it was called the Nationwide), LPGA pros, and even guys playing amateur college events. All of it cost me money - but I don't just play golf now and then, I love the sport, and support it.

And BTW? I got to meet a lot of other volunteers at the US Opens I worked. Almost to the person, they were pretty fanatic golfers (weekenders, casual golfers generally don't volunteer, in fact a lot of them probably wouldn't even know that you can volunteer). Serious golfers actually understand the value. It is about the experience. You can watch golf on TV. You can even get tickets to go see a tourney live as a spectator. Being a volunteer, however, is different. Yeah, you get some cool swag and perks, and open access to the tourney when you aren't working (in terms of just money, it is well worth it) but there is something much bigger than that. it is being part of a tournament. And that is an almost inexpressible feeling - most especially at a major.

BTW, you are unlikely to understand it, but the volunteer positions for next year's US Open are already filled - a year ahead of time. All that is left is a waitlist. If you do not grasp why so many serious golfers act that "stupid", you are saying a lot more about yourself than you are about the volunteers.

I volunteered for the 1972 Canadian Open.  It was a great experience.  Watching Lee Trevino and Sam Snead stand out, as was the round where I was assigned to marshal for Arnold.  Watched Lanny Wadkins and Ray Floyd in a practice round.  Priceless.

On the Tiger wasn't boring front, seems time makes people forget reality. Tiger was only "exciting" because a endless hype machine was built around him and because a lot of foolishness endeared people to him.

If you go back and watch interviews and pressers he was boring, period. Starting with "Hello, world." it was clear he wasn't conditioned to be in front of the camera, he was conditioned to win at golf. Go back and watch his last two US Ams or even 1997. He wasn't exciting or flashy, he was just Tiger, and the biggest thing that boosted the aura around him was the media aggrandizing the power he put on display during his wins, hitting shots in his youth than many fully grown men wouldn't dare to take on, whether that was going 300 off the tee or gouging it out of fescue and mattresses of whatever that could lead to injury.

Then Nike got into the works, making sure to make spectacle or note of just how good he was while writing bits of humor to show that Tiger did have personality, he just didn't let it out on the course. Their "Golf's Not Hard with Tiger Woods" spots and things like the one take ball bounced on the wedge until he hit it highlighted and hinted at both how good Tiger was and turned a guy who couldn't care less about entertaining into a global entertainer.

If Jack or Scottie had the same hype machine behind them they'd probably be thought of as exciting and entertaining as well the way Tiger and Arnie are, but Arnie is probably the only golfer who really fits into that category. Golf is a niche sport that rewards keeping a reign on one's emotions until the last putt drops. The guys who let it all hang out don't last long.

On the foolishness that endeared Tiger to people, he had to deal with a lot being the first golfer of his heritage to show such ability. Starting with death threats for daring to play certain courses, commentary about what certain races just aren't built to do, jokes by professionals who should have known better, and anything else I'm forgetting, Tiger dealt with a lot just to tee it up. Most of it at some point or another was reported on, and knowing someone wants their goals badly enough to push through that is going to win them respect and likability in the eyes on most people. Not something he chose at all, but it helped him highlight him as a true example of "sports overcomes all" and win him even more fans who cared nothing for golf beforehand.

One last thing is that Tiger was loved for "playing to the crowd", but if you go back and watch most of his big celebrations started and mostly stayed as something for himself or between himself and his caddie. It wasn't until he'd been out there quite a while that he'd really try and share the moment with the fans, and even then most of the fist pumps and walking the ball down was for him so that he could feed off what he'd just done or take a jab at his opponents.

Tiger was his authentic self out there, just as Scottie is. Tiger was just less reserved in his flashes of energy and wowed everyone a lot more because he hit errant shots that called for recoveries that would have been impossible for anyone else.

I don't know if Scheffler could hit that shot or many of Tiger's others, but the reality is he'd likely never have to because most of his misses are more conservative. Still, how much of that great shot's "energy" was due to all the anticipation built up because bad shots followed by splendor were the expectation of the day for Tiger?

Scottie and Tiger look no differently in or after those two instances, both just the best at what they do going about their work. Most of the hype and energy of the moment is from the announcers building it all up and getting excited as it all comes together with Tiger like they were calling the final lap of an F1 race. With Scheffler there's mostly calm admiration from the crew, and that seems to translate into how audiences take to him. There's a reason artists hype up the crowd before starting a performance if they want a high energy show. Scottie simply doesn't want and doesn't have the same hype machine behind him.

Like Jack, Scottie probably won't be fully appreciated for what he's doing until late in his career. In the moment many seem more focused on who they want him to be rather than being able to enjoy him being who he is and playing some of the most absurd golf anyone not named Tiger, Jack, or @PedronNiall will ever bring to the game.

Most people who come over the top can't play a lick of golf.  But Scottie does it and hits his soft fade into the fairway so often that it gets boring.  Guess lots of golf fans can't buy into boring soft fades.  If you know, you know.

TW didn’t need no hype, everyone was just in awe…

“This guy is it. He is I-T. He is No. 1. Nicklaus was my man. I always loved Nicklaus' game. But Tiger, man, I can't wait to turn the tube on. I study him. I love the way he plays. The way he carries himself.”

-Lee Trevino

https://www.espn.com/golf/columns/story?columnist=diaz_jaime&id=4667861

TW days were crazy….

Tailing Tiger at Augusta

“As fast as the fairway crosswalk ropes open and close, word has spread over club grounds: "He's on the driving range!"

The number of spectators in the practice area triples. Children are ushered to the rope, shorter spouses step in front of taller ones, roast-beef-faced old men squint, and bachelors with full beers flex onto their tiptoes.

The merchandise center actually structures its restocking and employee-break schedules around Tiger. "When Tiger's on the course, it's dead, but when he makes the turn or leaves for the day, it gets real busy," says one employee who has worked at the merchandise center for more than a decade.

As the gallery compresses and bodies jostle, much muttering begins. Each comment is anonymous, because to scan for the source is to risk toppling over.

"There he is."

"Man, is he ripped."

"He didn't even look at my kid."

"What's the big deal? Not like he's going to turn water into wine."

The last only underscores what this really is: a communal religious experience.

There he is.”

I'm probably one of the dullest people alive, and I generally watch a lot of dull TV, and I play very dull golf where I lay up instead of going for hero shots.  So I'm not sure exactly why, but when Scotty has a 5 stroke lead on Sunday, I'm just not interested.  I think it was also because we've had some absolute barn burner Sundays this year in Majors, making that final hour of Sunday coverage some of the best TV I've watched.

I turned off the TV when Scottie was on the 5th hole, and went out in the garage.  Instead of having the Sky stream on the TV, I watched a bit of YT, then listened to music.  Put some grips on some Royal Collection irons, measured out some shafts for some MP14s, mowed the lawn, picked some grapes, and hung out with my cat.  Came inside after a few hours to find the event ended, and Scottie giving the dullest trophy acceptance speech ever.  Been a long time since I didn't watch the back 9 of a major.

He is absolutely the best golfer in the world right now.  But I just don't care to watch I guess if he has a dominating lead.

I had planned to brew a batch of beer yesterday. As is typical, I was procrastinating and watching golf--I'm US West Coast so it was still fairly early in the morning.

Eventually I got bored watching Scottie just decimate the field that I set it up to record, went out to the garage, and did my brew day.

After I was done, I went to go watch the end. Normally my wife knows not to tell me spoilers for a sporting event that's time-shifted, but I told her "I'm going to watch the end even though I know Scottie won. I mean, I don't actually have any third-party information telling me that he won. But I know he won."

I like Scottie, but him with a commanding lead going into a Sunday is a bit anticlimactic. By the time he recovered from his double with that birdie on 10, and none of the chasers seeming to be going low, I knew it was over.
