Ping i240 irons - reviews

Noticed the i240 irons are on Ping’s website and fittings have started. They look much better than expected after seeing early bag pics. Will be interested to see what people think once get a chance to hit or after fittings. Surprisingly not many of their players have switched to these which makes me wonder why. Looks like will make good combo with Blueprint S.

  • hackalot changed the title to Ping i240 irons - reviews

Hit the 7i fitting head the other day with a SF 110 stiff, which is the shaft I have been playing most lately.  Head feels good, looks good from address but does it do anything the i230 doesn't do?  IMO, no.  I think it will be a solid club, and I love Ping, but I don't think there' anything groundbreaking here.

Because we are at the most critical point of the PGA and DP Tour seasons.

Check out the coolclubs video on them. Essentially, they are better than i230 on thin shots and they're poor on toe shots.

Probably a bad fit if you hit lots of toes and great if you never hit toe but hit it thin alot.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h3dZ2dJ4jIg

Good video.

Summary:  240 has a lower CG, so more height and spin, and a little shorter distance wise as a result.  A longer blade length, more offset, and thinner top line.  Sounds like Ping is pushing these clubs more towards the masses.  They sell Blueprint for the lower cap crowd, so that seems like a reasonable product strategy.

Feels like a good combination addition to Blueprint S. Probably launch too high to constitute the lower clubs, but as a 4 and 5 in an otherwise Blueprint S or similar set, they seem like they'd be great.

This seems about right.

the toe looks like a blueprint from the back now and the groves visually look the same too.

they will blend better than the i230s as a result.

as a i230 user nothing has jumped out as a reason to change but that can’t be a surprise to anyone. It was the same situation for i210 users last time round. Simple good high performing irons.

They look great. I don't imagine that many will fall into pro bags with their baseline ability to increase launch and spin. Minority of pros want more launch and spin throughout the set. I could be wrong. They'll make their way into hundreds of thousands of bags globally though, they have broad appeal.

Yeah as @wfrogge1 points out, I think this is a low point for tour players testing new clubs. Titleist has said the same thing in recent years when they've rolled out their new irons -- that generally players aren't looking to spend a ton of time testing and making changes right now, but they will in the offseason and that's when more will switch.

What I'll be watching is the LPGA Tour bags on Ping's website, since the i230s and the i2XX line generally has been really popular there (though the Blueprint S has knocked the i230s out of some bags). Ping does a better job than other OEMs at displaying the exact specs of their players' bags, and updating them pretty regularly. I checked yesterday and saw a few references to "prototype" irons in some LPGA bags, especially on the long end ... safe to guess those are i240s and will be updated soon.

Driver: Titleist GT3 10° @10.75° | Fujikura Ventus Red 6X

3W: Titleist GT3 15° | Fujikura Ventus Red 7S

7W: Titleist GT2 21° @ 20.25° | Fujikura Ventus Red 7S

Hybrid: Ping G430 5H @ 25° | VA Slay 85S

Irons: Ping i230 5-UW | Fujikura Axiom 105X

Wedges: Callaway Opus 54°/14W, 60°/8C | Nippon Modus 115 Wedge

Putter: Bettinardi 2024 BB1 Wide

Currently testing for GolfWRX: Wilson DYNAPWR Carbon 3W at standard 15° and 5W at +1 19° with Ventus TR Blue 7S, DYNAPWR 4H at standard 22° with Graphite Design Tour AD DI 85S

Lots of reviews out now and most pretty positive. Looks like might be great addition to lineup and worth testing.

We have to recognize that the YouTube gear review ecosystem is part of the promotional machine. None of them are going to be overly critical of an OEM club that just launched.

This is sometimes hard to see in real time but it's revealing to search on a similar club that was launched six months or a year ago. It'll be hard to find any negative reviews.

Thanks. Was just thinking the same thing.
I don’t even seek out those YouTube reviews but have noticed so many say something to the effect of “Best… Ever???!”. Lol

More spin and less distance than the 230?!

Wonderful…

At some point there will be no distance gains to be had, and we're pretty close IMO. The marketing will flop back to emphasizing accuracy, consistency or spin control.

I watched a great TPI iron fitting video and the fitter seemed to be going down that road, basically saying that the endless pursuit for distance was passe' and the more important thing was being able to get the ball close to the hole regardless of which club is in hand.

"Distance gain" marketing will keep coming as long as clubs are ID'ed by a # and not loft. We're not that far from seeing a set with a 40 degree PW.

I agree that we’re close or already there. The manufacturers are releasing the HL models now because a bag full of 1 irons doesn’t help anyone.

I bought a 4 and 5 to play with my Blueprint S 6-P. Hard to get ahold of i230 individual irons in good shape, and even then they're within shouting distance in price to the new ones. Figured why not. Now I'm anxiously waiting.

Just did same except also got the 6 also and can swap out depending on how swing feels.

HA - how would you even fill in the bottom of that bag! I guess there could be a set GW at 42 and a set SW at 46? Then you buy a singe GW at 50-52 and a single sand at 54-58? And then maybe a LW too?

Imagine how confusing it would be to tell a caddie what club to grab for you with that bag.
