Ping i240 irons - reviews

The i240 fitting heads and Modus 115  shafts arrived today at my course. I work in the golf shop so I got some time to hit the club, outdoors ,range balls on grass. I currently play i230 ,modus 105S. I hit the new i240 ,my gamer and a fitting cart Blueprint S. There was light rain so I did not our launch monitor, no data so just impressions.

Looks. Compared to the i230 and Blueprint it looks a little busy. I don't dislike it.

Size. The blade is slightly longer and not as tall as the i230 . The top line ,to me looks very similar. At address looking down, they (i230/i240) look basically the same. The BP is smaller than both.

Feel. the i240 has a slightly firmer feel than the i230. For me it was noticeable. The i230 has a more muted feel. The BP feels better than both!

Performance. With no data , what I saw was very similar distance from all 3. My Arcos data says I avg slightly over 160 yds with my 7 Iron.  Perhaps a higher launch with the i240 but honestly again ,all 3 were very similar. As for forgiveness, the i240 felt better on thin shots compared to the i230. Both are more forgiving than the BP, but IMO, not by much.

We have a Ping Fitting day on Saturday. It will be interesting to see the spin rate and distance of the i240. After playing the i230 for over a year, I'm thinking about a switch to graphite. If I get a new set I'll go with i240 5,6 and maybe 7. BP 8.9 PW. The BP feels very nice and its plenty forgiving for my 5.7 cap.

Awesome feedback, thanks for sharing. The i240 feeling better on thin strikes is interesting -- that's one where the i230 can feel kind of nasty. Love hearing that the blade length is slightly longer, too. I was especially hoping that'd be the case in the long irons. I've never had such a love/hate feeling about an iron release: hate the badging on the back, love absolutely everything else I'm hearing. Can't wait to test these.

Hit range balls today with a 7i.  Not a scheduled full fitting, just walk-up to a fitter who had a few extra minutes.  Off a mat, maybe 15 balls.

For reference: 56 yo, 6 HC, 7i SS 85'ish. Recent clubs played: Apex Pro's, 243's, i525's, T150's and currently in Cobra King Tours. Shaft preference, graphite, S- / R+.

Really like the address position, perfect sizing for my liking, ball framed nicely.  Noticeably leaner than i530, making the i530 look like a Game Improvement head. Appears many don't care for the rear badging, but I like it.  Seeing them in person and if you step back and think about it, the clean and everything is hidden look, is so copycat these days. Looks as if Ping went into their own sandbox, and put engineering ahead of marketing.

1st swing, 1st impression...."that was soft and quiet". Maybe I was expected something more like the i525, clicky, or just read too many comments.  2nd swing, "yeah, that feels really good, just fine, not harsh at all".  Rinse and repeat, impressed.  Consistent ball flight.  One thin ball, which was penalizing.  Confirmed by the fitter in his experience for thin shots - don't come out of it!

For me, given the various clubs I've played, Forged Feeling is overrated.  Play a premium ball and they all feel just fine, with their own unique sound and feel. Pack a lunch if you are going to argue against Ping engineering, forgiveness, and playability over other OEM's in this category.

What it was not - ball did not jump off the face or feel hot leaving the club.  Was not a piercing flight, but I mostly attribute that to the shaft and a soft mat surface.

Would have liked to hit some off turf and see how it reacts to digging it out.  Playability from the rough (FL bermuda) is a big deal for me.  A few soles do it well for my angle of attack, most do not. i525's worked, will see how the i240's do.

If someone has been able to compare, is the i240 sole width somewhere in between the Titleist T150 and the T250?

I just ordered a new set 4-PW in the Modus Pro 105 stiff. I tried the ZXi5, T250, T150 and P770. My least favorite were the Titleist. The 250 I hated the feel, the 150 were not forgiving enough for me. I had it narrowed down to the i240 and ZXi5. Felt like the Ping performed the best on average and had good feedback and feel. The ZXi5 felt better when they were flushed but not as consistent on mis hits. The Ping spun more and consistently. Excited to get them in this week!

How did carry distances compare on all those?
