I think the current trend in golf instruction YouTube/instagram content is exactly correct. The people don’t want what they need, they want what they want.

Now, as for youtube, insta, TikTok, nicknackpaddywhack, etc....I dont think most content creators care about what the people need or want. Content creators care about views, likes, and comments. They got a family to feed, yo. Gotta make that money.

I agree. But I don’t know exactly what you mean 🙃.   People do “ want  what they want “… but specifically what is it they want that doesn’t match what they need ?

Don’t you think that they think the likes/views are more likely to come from content people want vs actually need?

 

People want to hunt for golden nuggets. So, the merchants offer the possibility of a secret golden nugget.

No, they want a quick, easy secret fix that no one has ever mentioned that will allow them to try it the first time and suddenly hit it as straight and long as a tour pro……because after all, it is “the secret the tour pros never told you.”

You’re not wrong. People want quick fixes and that’s what a lot of social media golf is. How to fix your slice, how to stop early extending, how to stop hooking the ball, and so on.

 

There’s some good channels on YouTube that I think are a little beyond that like Chris Ryan or Alex Riggs on Instagram.

 

but overall I agree it’s based around what golfers want.

The swing is so nuanced with matchups that most folks dont know what they need and they think they know what they want. 

 

Golf content creation is almost literally "throw it at the wall and see what sticks".  

 

A true game changer in golf content will be someone who explains things in a matchups kind of way. But even then...Will your avg 15 cap understand it?

 

Social media golf content creation is a hustle...simple as that.

Yeah, but the last one I saw guaranteed to give me an extra 30 yards. Surely that's purely altruistic?? I mean, I did walk an extra 30 yards after watching it. No idea if it works for the swing.

Absolutely. He is not content generator, he's usually a feature on someone's channel, like Dana someone i also like a lot. Wish there was more of him, it's not a lot.

George Gankas had a video or two on matchups and I dont think the topic was all that popular.

We live in a microwave society.  We don't want to go that low and slow overnight brisket in the smoker. Microwave is cheap and fast and smokers and brisket are slow and expensive . Both and result in culinary disasters but people accept the cheap disasters. The expensive ones will scar them.

 

Microwave done right is almost an accident but results are still meh. Smoker brisket done right is amazing.Same thing for golf and other educational products..

I actually think the short game instruction stuff is in a good spot. Parker is really the only one I see making those videos on youtube but his stuff is pretty good and widely applicable.

I can speak from practical experience.

 

If I pick the 10 best videos I’ve ever put on Instagram.  Stuff that basically has 100% success rate for distance and score improvement with in person lessons. 
 

Those posts have done horribly.

 

They were objective info that’s proven to work.

 

When I give a mindless (but still helpful) “tip” those go viral.

 

”Here’s what better players do” and “Here’s what actually happens in good swings” don’t do well.

 

“I’m a long drive champion, do this and you’ll hit it far,” do really well.

 

When I analyze a great players swing and say here’s what most (90%+) good to elite players do, the comments are filled with outliers doing different.

 

My next premium video is going to be. 
 

I won a world long drive title.

I played high level golf and played in majors.

I made national top instructor lists.

 

No one but me can claim all 3.  Here is the secret sauce method to longer and straighter drives.

 

Now all the info will be solid and has proven to be effective, but the marketing makes me sick because it’s what people buy.

It's mostly all content consumption. Most people watching it aren't looking to play better golf. (Even if their name is BE BETTER GOLF 🤣 they still may not actually be committed to improvement...I lost that one but I digress). 

 

A lot of people that watch content on the internet don't even partake. Most of the content "for the masses" is for people that don't even swing a golf club regularly. There's a reason GoodGood, Grant Horvat, BDS, are all so popular. Their charm has little to do with golf.

My dad loves the Traeger I got him and it takes him 2 days to make the best ribs I've ever tasted...and he still wants me to give him a "quick" tune up on the range 10 minutes before we tee off.

I'd like to know how 2 day ribs works.  I don't think you could cold smoke them  and still not take more than 24 hrs... I have a reqteq and if I turn it on the lowest setting id still have em done in 6 hours.

If I watch a bunch of high level/generic tips, I can pretend/delude myself into thinking that I'm doing something about my game. I get the slight feel good about myself that is meaningless in the long run. If I really wanted to improve, I'd have to watch more in depth videos and actually think about it and learn something which is not easy mode. Like many have said there's gotta be a magic/silver bullet in social media somewhere! Overall most people are lazy....

Yeah, i don't know how it works. Lets just say "forever." I think when he said 2 days, he was talking about when he made 20 racks for all the guys in his Bible Study group.
