Callaway Apex Ai150 Irons! In-Hand Pics

Recommended Posts

I have a set of the Ai150's inbound.. I started with APEX Pro, really liked them, were very easy to shape the ball, but at 60y and post total left knee replacement I grew tired of coming up just short of greens on my approach shots.. traded the APEX Pro's towards the Ai200's, played those for a couple of months, and knowing that each club in the bag is a club stronger lofted than the Pro's.. I either took one less club, or tried to ease off of one.. sometimes that worked, but most often I was now on the back edge of the green.. better than short of it I guess.. I'm hoping the Ai150's will fit that spot with some help, but not loose the launch and spin numbers.

I'd be curious to ask anyone who has these already; do the come with all black ferrules and how are the swing weights? How many grams are the rear weights?

Callaway will accept a Swingweight.  So, enter the order and then call CS to tell them your desired SW.

Mine actually arrived yesterday, i went with stock DG MID 115g S300 shafts,  only change was GPTV 360 grips, and the Blue colored back weight. I only checked the 7i so far and swingweight was right at D2.

I thought that the release / shipping date was 7/25, but I got lucky I guess.

Can u post some in hand pics with the blue weights. Thanks

Thanks for the pics.  You mentioned that you had the Pros - do you still have them or were those traded for the 200s?  If you do still have them - could we get a picture of address of both.  If not, could we get an address picture of the ZX7 and 150s you have there (I play pros currently and my son plays ZForged/ZX7).

APEX Pro traded in towards the Ai200, which were traded in towards the APEX Ai150's..

Hard to get photo's at address for irons for me, that's why I took the sole picture. I will say, every YT video I watched mentioned the leading edge relief on the Ai150's.. I really can't see it, maybe if I hold it just right. I haven't played them yet, hopefully tomorrow..

Have you had a chance to hit these yet?  Anyone else have any feedback on the 150's?  I'm looking to put in an order for some cal irons...and unfortunately, no store in the area have these. Thanks

I just placed an order for them. I have never played a callaway iron but was very pleased when hitting these. They are slightly smaller heel to toe than my zxi7. I didn’t think I would like that but again I was pleasantly surprised. I also wasn’t a fan of the chrome but I like the way contrast between the chrome heel/toe and satin face. Not great for wear and tear but it’ll be okay. Frames the ball well imo. They feel incredibly solid and way better than the apex pro. Excited to see how they perform outside.

I’ve never cared for callaway irons as I’ve been a mizuno lover. Played MP20MB for many years then switched to 923 hot metal pros. I’m swinging faster so needed a stiffer shaft so hit these irons this am. Wow, they nailed it with these irons. Great turn interaction without digging, even on tight lies. Only gave up 5 yards maybe on my 923hmp irons, but very forgiving and can work these irons. I can’t do that with my current set.  I’m going to take the demo to the course next week and make a final decision.  The stock shaft works well with this club. Well done Callaway!!

Excited to read some reviews on these - I absolutely love the look at address, and as others have noted, how the chrome frames the ball on the face.  Looking forward to following this thread!

So I took the 7 iron out tonight and hit a lot of shots with it.  Full swings, tight lies, punch shots, par 3 tee shots, knockdowns, working it both ways into greens.  Here are my thoughts:  I can definitely tell it's not a solid one piece forging.  It left a bit to be desired on feel, didn't feel solid.  With that said, I love the way they look and frame the ball.  The turf interaction with these are incredible, I can hit a high launching club off a tight lie without digging.  These are as long as my 923 HMP irons.  I did like how they spin more as they stop close to my divots.  I have reservations on distance control on less than full swings.  I feel like the swing weight with the stock shaft was low.  I wish Callaway would publish their desired SW specs, perhaps if I could order a stronger SW I would like them more.  I'm on the fence with getting a set.   I'm sure I would get used to feel.  I do want to try the 8 iron to see if it's more solid for the short irons.  Need more time demoing.  I really haven't hit another iron like this before, and I've hit a lot.  The ai face really helps for off-center contact.  I'm hoping the short irons aren't has hot. If so it may work, if not I could definitely see playing these in long/mid irons.

After a second day of taking demo to the course and a third range session I'm going to stick with my Mizuno irons.  I can't get over the feel (just doesn't feel solid for me), if I were to get a second set these would definitely be it.

I've watched a few reviews of these and yet to see anyone hit the short irons. I play a ZX5/ZX7 combo set and really like the feel the ball has coming off the ZX7s (8-PW). Wondered how these compare in the 8-PW.

I’m wondering the same. The 7 iron doesn’t seem to be that spinny going by online reviews but I think that’s by design. I’m assuming from the 8 iron down with the 17-4 face, it’s spins more.

The srixons feel way more solid but don’t work well on thin strikes. I also hit the 8 iron quite a bit and it also didn’t have the solid feel I was hoping for. Even though it’s a players distance iron it spun appropriately in every iron I hit.

After several weeks of reading through comments, YT reviews, and other online reviews, I decided to go back to my fitter and give these a go. A few weeks ago I had tested the new T-Series line (except T100), JPX 925 Forged, Srixon ZXi series with my fitter so had an idea on comparison. Currently gaming back and forth between i530s and T200/350 combo. Since I’m on the way back to mid single digits, I was looking for something more to be desired. Mainly something more compact, better feel, and more workable. Current gamers are fine but a bit challenging to work the ball especially at my home club where shot placement on the greens come at a premium. Also haven’t been in love with current gamers especially when it comes to feel. I’m a bit of a sweeper to little divots, so wide soles and I don’t really play well on miss hits.

Once I set the AI150s, I was immediately hooked on the look at address. It was nice and compact, with the top line perfect to my eye. I wouldn’t say I was intimidated but more so hoping I could game these. After the first swing, I was like “Whoa! That felt amazing.” Then after through about 20 shots everything was repeatable and easy to hit. Dispersion and ball flight were hitting all the marks. I barely had any miss hits. Was either in the zone or these things are legit! I was getting some T100S vibes from these irons which I gamed for two seasons, but weren’t the most forgiving. These reminded me of just about everything I loved about the T100S’s but so much more easier to hit. I also didn’t see really any lost in distance which is great. Was perfect blend of feel, performance, and aesthetics to me. I was hitting my ideal numbers on the launch monitor between 44-47 on the decent angle. My bad strikes only lowered the decent angle to 42-43 at worst. Only nitpick I had was spin was slightly lower than I was used to, but at those decent angles, the ball is going to stop especially in Northwest golf conditions throughout the year and using premium balls vs. range balls. I then started hitting shape shots left to right, right to left, etc. Was so easy to control and hit on command. I thanked my fitter and immediately went home to place my order and took advantage of both the Callaway 2X trade-in special, additional 15% military/veterans discount, and applied my Callaway points. Ended up with a 6-GW Nippon 950s set-up to gap with my Ping G440 5-hybrid (decided to replace a couple months ago and have never looked back).

Now we play the waiting game.

What’s your opinion on the differences between the Ai200’s and the 150’s?  I have been in apex since 2018 line the feel of the 200’s am also 60 and didn’t think these irons would be a good fit for me but you have me curious.

Spot on. If a player is looking for forged feel, as in 1020 carbon steel, I don’t think the ai150 feels like that. I also have the NL 702CB+ — tremendous irons which to me are like a more forgiving X Forged — and the ai150 does not have that “pure” feel. Having both I have hit them side by side a few times and they all work for me. I think the ai200 feels good too, maybe a touch softer than the ai150. The 702CB+ is about as forgiving a one-piece forged iron as you’ll find, but the ai150 is more forgiving. The New Level feel is as good as I have experienced. There always are tradeoffs.

The ai150 does have a satisfying feel IMO. For the high-tech iron that it is, Callaway’s formula with the microspheres works well. And without a doubt it shines on mishit performance. Some poor swings I’ve had produced mishits with more of a thud sound, but the shot results are fine, better than I deserve. Really good on thin contact, a big difference there.

The short irons feel closer to the TCB to me, but not quite the same.

Comparison pics - 7 iron of the ai150 vs Apex Pro 24 (in plastic) and Apex Pro Smoke 19.  I do not have any Apex Pro 21 after a trading them in months ago.

It’s been great reading through this thread and others threads regarding the ai150. This really helped me feel good about this iron change. My ai150’s arrived tonight, but I have not hit them yet. I placed my custom order (shafts/grips) on Saturday around 11 pm and they arrived Tuesday evening in NC.

My most recent sets have been the Apex Pro 19 & 21 and Apex Pro 24.  The ai200 just never suited me and I was happy with my Pro 21 at that time. The Apex Pro 21 was my favorite of the group listed above. This set was heavily gamed plus lessons so I traded them in for the Pro 24. I really wanted to like/keep the Pro 24, but I grew frustrated with them over time. So, I traded in my Apex Pro 24 for the ai150 since I would hit these shots that felt good, flying at the proper trajectory and then at times they would come up 5-10 yards short of my landing area. I was just getting punished at times for a lower toe side of center strike. The Pro 24 seemed to lack contact feedback vs my past sets. I was regularly looking for contact marks to figure out what took place. I believe/know it was yes me and my switch to MMT 90s/85r with the Pro 24 vs being use to playing UST Recoil Smacwraps 780 F4. I tried both MMT shafts in the Pro 24 to give it a good run, but I said enough. So, I went back to UST Recoils HDC 80s in the ai150 after speaking with UST. The HDC’s are a bit lighter than I am use too, but not overly. Plus, I hit this combo at my local builder’s place about a week ago. My preferred 780 shaft is not on the custom list was the my dilemma. So far, the ai150 reminds me of the backside of the Pro 21 (thicker than 24 in lower section), has a similar top line/face of Pro 24 and the soles all vary a bit. I believe this set will be a nice tweener between the Pro 21 and Pro 24 for me. Time will tell though.

ai150 is the shiny head and not in plastic.

I’m excited for you to hit these, I played the Apex21 / 21 pro combo and always wished they were all Pro.  Now I have the 24 pro/cb combo.  I love the pro4&5 iron and I love the 8/9/10 in the CB.  The pro 6&7 aren’t my favorite but these 150s have the same face plate as the 24 pro 4&5.  I almost ordered 150 6&7 irons just to try and add to my set.  I’ll be curious how you feel the 6&7s compare to your 24 pro 6&7.
