T150 vs Ai150 and advice on shafts worth demoing

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow wrxers

I'm currently gaming T200 with AMT 300S shafts but they feel a bit laboured to swing, not heavy, but maybe the swing weight isn't optimal.

for information, my tempo is probably on the deliberate side, and 7i swing speed is ~84-87 mph. My preferred shot shape is a baby cut / fade, but i'm also subject to the odd pull / draw.

This Monday I demoed the Callaway Apex Ai 150 along with the Ai 200 and they were significantly better balanced in my opinion.

Got to try a selection of shafts in the Ai200 while the Ai 150 club had a bonded hosel.

The stock DG Mid 100 was a tad light while the 115 suited me quite good. Also had a go at the Nippon 105 which was acceptable.

The Px 6.0 I've had a go at before in T100 /150, and i really like their solid feel which also worked good in the Ai200.  Having demoed the KBS tour 120 S in a i230, i also wanted to try that shaft in the Ai200, but he could only offer the $-taper 120 S which did not seem to work as well with my swing.

Bottom line on shafts, I think 115-120 seems like the sweet spot in terms of weight for me, however i havent tried anything heavier than 120.

Are there any potential upsides to potentially increased weight of the shaft?

Really enjoyed the Ai150, but i do also have a demo / fitting scheduled with Titleist next week.  Have my eyes set on the 2025 T150 which I hope should suit my play / skill level.

Has anyone here tried to hit these two clubs side by side, and can give a decent opinion on numbers / experience head to head?

Final question relates to bag composition, as I'm also pondering 4-P vs 5-P.  The top end of my bag is comprised of driver, (3) / 5w and a 4h + 4ui. The 4ui is rarely in use and will most likely be shelved, as it nearly overlaps with 5i in terms of distance.

I don't think the fitter / demo here in Norway travels with multiple irons from each set here, but I can't say for sure. Thus difficult to know whether or not it's worth going 4-P.

Would thus appreciate you guys input on 4-P vs 5-P!

This post spun a bit out of my initial question, but i would very much appreciate input!

+1 for 5-P, I love the feel of the KBS tour 120 stiff and enjoyed the fitting I had with the T150 previously.

I would consider the Ai150 in 5-pw and the Ai200 4 iron.  The Ai200 4 iron is crazy easy to hit. I have the 4-pw Ai200 in my bag.  My 5 goes 195 and the 4 goes 210,so no overlap.

Thanks for the recommendation. Which shafts did you go for?

Is it worth going for a lighter shaft in the 4 iron?

I moved from a 120g shaft in my old set to the DG Mid 100 which is a 106g shaft in the Ai200.  I just turned 60, and found that I was having more and more difficulty controlling the heavier shaft. I'm very happy with my decision.

It's their stock shaft and was a good for for me.  Also went 1/2 inch long. See photo below.  Only thing I would consider changing if I did it over is, I wouldnhave gotten the CP2 Blue grips for $13 per club.

No idea if that is best for you, but it seems all these specialty 2 and 3 irons use lighter shafts.  A 4 hybrid also uses a lighter shaft.

I bet one of our club techs on this board could answer that better.

Modus 120S and Mid 115 are the two I’d try. Modus is a bit easier to swing than the Mid 115, but it likes to draw a bit. I loved the feel of the Modus, but recent switched to the Mid’s as I had a tendency to lose the ball left.

I have the AMT(ascending mass technology) black shafts in my T150’s. They get progressively heavier by a few grams as you progress through the irons. I find they help with launch in the longer irons and they prevent the wedges from ballooning.
I would recommend that you check that shaft out. The shaft is available in both sets. I see myself purchasing the AI 150 with the AMT black shafts in the near future. I love my T150’s but I just don’t think I’m a pure enough ball striker for them.

Thanks for the input.

I'm generally a pretty high launcher of the ball, and have been playing AMT Black S300 in both my recent two sets, T300 (2021) and T200 (2023). Seeing the ball launch high in and of itself is good, but my home course is normally a bit windy, and thus the balls which apex > 30m / 100 ft, gets eaten alive by headwind.

Demoed the T150 yesterday and settled on AMT white as my optimum shaft, getting the launch a bit lower while also getting more consistency on impact location and flight.

Have thus slept on it overnight, and decided to order me a set of 5-9 T150 with AMT Tour White S300, +0.5" / 2° up and 1° strong.

That sounds like a great set for you. How would compare the AI 150 to the T150 with the AMT shafts in both?

I didnt get the chance to try Ai150 with the AMT shaft, but tried it again yesterday with DG Mid 115. It's a fair bit hotter, maybe 5-10 yards, but based on the few swings I had, the spin also seemed to drop by about 1k. The feeling and looks / size of the two club heads at address are fairly similar.

During the Titleist fitting, I first tried the AMT Silver, but could not swing it if so my life depended on it. Onto the AMT white, and it was a revelation.  Funny what ~10 grams can do.

Thanks for the insight. I see myself getting either of one of these sets with AMT shafts. I of course will do a fitting but it’s nice to hear about others’ experiences.
The drop of 1k spin is a lot. How did you find these irons compared when looking at left to right and front to back dispersion?
Did you have any issues with the narrower sole of the T150? Was it any more or less forgiving than the AI 150? I saw a comparison pic that has the AI 150 sole wider than the T150 but it looks narrower than the T200 and T250. I have a T200 5 iron and I didn’t want to get a T200 6 iron or 7 iron because the feel just isn’t there and they’re a bit chunky for my liking. But also, the narrower T150 sole doesn’t fill me with confidence at times. On paper, the AI 150 looks like it could be the perfect middle ground but golf isn’t played on paper as we know.

When I was fitted 2 years ago, I narrowed it down to the 2023 T150’s and the 2021 Apex but ultimately went with the T150’s

because they spun more and felt better despite a very similar ball flight.

My experience with both these irons has been limited to hitting off a mat, so that has some impact on the results, and thus I can’t say too much about turf interaction yet.
My first round with Ai150, I was on it, and it was so easy to hit. Off a mat on an outdoor range, those spin numbers weren’t representative, but loved flight and distance, baby fade and good landing angle.  Also contact club-ball was great.
The T150 was indoor in a bay, and while not having the best day, I think I also suffered from the indoor golf syndrome, which affected the results a bit. Carry of ~145-153 meters and pretty good dispersion despite my swing being more out-in than normal. Spin in the 6000-6500 area and 48 landing angle, so all in all great numbers.
The last quick test of the Ai150 was just after my fitting with Titleist, to get the comparison with T150 fresh in mind. I was probably a bit fatigued due to heat (26*C on a daily basis in Norway this week) and many swings with the T150. Thus couldn’t put up my best swing, but still got some apples to apples numbers with the Ai150. Did not see any spin number at 6k or higher, despite a baby fade, but distances increased to ~153-158.
My opinion of the clubs is that they’re very similar in shape and performance, and I really had a hard time choosing.

Having a massive soft spot for Titleist, that probably swayed my decision, but I’d have no issue going for the Ai150. Callaway’s stock has risen substantially in my book.

Regarding Apex pro vs Ai150; what I’ve read is that these are a massive upgrade on the 24 pro’s, but I haven’t tried those myself.
just getting back into golf 2 years ago after a 20 year hiatus, has put some limit on my club portfolio and experience.
