Club fitter had me thinking Iron Shaft Change

Currently got fitted for a Ping G440max and settled settled with lighter 60g tour 2.0 shaft stiff, 9 degree head set to 8*. Good peak 90-100, launch at 11, carry 270 avg...Swing speed over the 70 balls was avg 110.7. Fyi im a middle age who plays tourneys

He then looked at my irons...mkii srixon zx7s. Kbs tour $-taper 120 stiff. Lots of pulls hooks these...on course. He said you ever looked at say a modus pro tour 105-xstiff playing at 112g. Thats a mid launch mid spin. My spin current with a 7 is 5500.

Curious thoughts on moving to lighter shaft but stiffer flex.

Shaft profile for both are different which could definitely affect stability, spin, etc.

(handle to tip)

$-taper - stiff/med+/med

Modus 105 - med+/stiff/stiff

Weight is also a huge factor as it affects delivery into the ball big time. I know for myself that pull hook with a shaft, it usually means it's too soft and light. May or may not apply to you. Only way to know for sure is to test.

Did they let you try it or did they just drop a brain worm on you and say "see ya later!"? If the latter, that sucks and is cruel (🤣). However, you can always go to a golf store locally and ask to try the combo, or at least something close to it like in the Mizuno or Callaway cart.

100% brainworm. And I have been fixated on it ever since 🤣.

That's good information thinking about the shaft profile and the different weight. I know or at least heard the hitting inside Drops spin on irons so definitely want to try it outside. The weight is around 8 g difference.Things of concern would be adding too much spin and adding too much loft And getting something too light where dispersion is worse.

Sure, it can work for some. The downside, especially for better players, can sometimes be a loss of control with the lighter weight. However, other players match up well with the lighter weight and see benefits. You certainly have more than enough swing speed for Modus 105X if you are sitting in the 110 range with driver.

Two things to watch out for:

1. I haven't seen many players improve a hook with a lighter weight shaft, even in a stiffer flex. Again, this isn't always the case, just something to be aware of.

2. Watch spin rates. Modus 105X is said to be mid spin but the shaft profile is pretty player dependent related to spin. It wouldn't surprise me if spin drops too low with it.

Not to drop another brain worm, but another less drastic option could be $ Taper 125 S+ or even some X-flex full weight shaft options soft stepped to fight the hook. If you are looking to add a bit of spin to the irons, I'd be interested to see what KBS Tour X SS or KBS Tour S+ look like.

Did you ever get fit for lie angle with your irons? This sounds like they are too upright if you are hitting pull hooks and have not gotten a dynamic lie angle fitting.

Yup, I got fitted.. I am 1° upright.My natural shot shape is a baby fade with every club that I have. I've always been fitted 1 to 2° upright.

But that's a great interesting point. I need to go get them measured ......Maybe they have changed. Would be able to rule out this.

Thats some great stuff there too. Im going to look into both sides of spectrum. In theory like you said these can push my ball left more. Brainhoggled so far in a lighter shaft option he said!

Ill try to get out to outdoors soon with different shafts and see. I tried GG today but my 7 iron shots registered ~220 total with ~2500 several times..im sure thats not right 🤣🤣

Hitting off a short tee inside can help get around that limitation.

Well it's not impossible - but it's very rare for the lie angle being off a few degrees to cause drastic changes to the shot shape. More commonly it would just mean only a few yards change in lateral motion - only 2-3 yards per 1* the lie angle is off.
