Amazing how much better project x 6.5 is for me compared to x100s

I’ve been an x100 players for 10 plus years. Recently wanted to try some different iron shafts for the first time bought a set with modus 125x, so whippy and spinny. Heard about project x shafts feeling supposedly boardy feeling, found a set of pxg blades with 6.5s in them.

INCREDIBLE. I lost that pull, too quick draw shot I get. Hit so many more greens. No fear of the left ball. Hit nothing but hold off fades one way miss. One negative is it doesn’t feel as good as x100. It’s lost that thump in the ground, but I don’t care. Scores don’t lie.

It goes so straight and the ball fight is strong. What was once a two club wind with x100s, now is a one club. It’s the perfect controlled go forward ball flight. Honestly confuses me now how many pros play x100s unless there hard stepped or something.

anyone else play a million times better with project x ?

Not a fan of either shaft in terms of feel, however, I fit into the X100 profile and have played it for many years because it was pretty much the only option back in the day before PX/Nippon/KBS hit the scene.

X100 - med+/stiff/stiff

PX 6.5 - stiff/med+/stiff

PX works better in general for those that have moderate to aggressive transitions and X100 works better for those who are smooth to moderate.  This mainly has to do with handle stiffness, IMO.  There are always exceptions though.

Can you give me a tour players name that has a smooth transition? Never quite understood this. Obviously job rahm is the exception, but predominantly every player that has over 110 mph speed doesn’t look smooth to me.

Adam Scott.  Jake Knapp.  Are smooth.

Stephen jaeger and taylor Penrith are aggressive.

tour pros that are “aggressive” still have a pretty neutral path in most case.

amatuers that are aggressive tend to be steep and out to in.

Cameron Smith and Cameron Davis have smoother transitions and they are both over 170 ball speed.

Agree, but I don't consider Adam smooth.  He's more moderate, IMO, and can get pretty aggressive with driver when he wants to shift to 6th gear which isn't often.

Not necessarily.  I'll use me as an example.  I have an aggressive transition but hate PX 6.5/7.0.  Both started left and drifted even more left.  It comes down to feel and how the golfer's brain interprets it which determines what happens on the downswing.

Yup.  I like 7.0 but hate 6.5.  I need the weight of 7.0s as it helps with my rythem and timing.  I lose the 6.5 in transition and hit some of the best hosel rockets you’ve ever seen

Interesting, is that bc you’re used to the 130 gram feel? I don’t have an insane club speed. Hit 7 iron 180. Always heard 7.0 are for Gary woodland Rory types.

No.  Shafts don’t work like that.  To be honest it’s how you react to the shaft, not the other way around.

I wish I understand and I’ve been playing this game for 20 years. X100s my miss is an overcooked draw. These 6.5s are hard to draw and fade. They just go straight.

Could mean less consistent face contact, could mean you get a little flippy because you’re looking for a loading feel. But also maybe they just work. I wouldn’t worry about the ‘why’ if you’ve tried and like them.

Just out of curiosity how would the modus 120 x/tx fit into that simplified mold you bucketed those two into.

I fit into the group that does much better with PX vs. x100. There are a lot of ppl that don’t like PX, i think that probly comes down to the stiffer feeling butt section of the PX. When I was fit into PX iron shafts, I was shocked at the difference it made, gained decent amount of distance and drastically tightened up dispersion. I tend to struggle when I feel a shaft has a good amount of bend to it, or has a weaker butt section. I have a moderate/slightly aggressive transition but a late release. I am definitely sensitive to profile changes in shafts.

I like Rocco mediates take. He uses 7.0s at his age and says he wants to feel the club with him at all times. That’s exactly how I feel with project x. It’s never behind you, there’s no whip feel.

I had an iron shaft fitting in the spring. Long time x100 player. Short time modus 120x player. Hit both left a lot. Project X LS 7.0 was the first shaft I didn't hit left. Then, the C Taper. Finally settled on $ Taper. Probably could have played the standard project x also. Pretty sure I tried it but the $Taper had the best feel/dispersion combo for me.

So, slightly different product but exactly the same results/thoughts you have. I don't curve it much with this shaft for sure - almost hard to work it much. Doesn't feel quite as nice as X100 and certainly not as good as ANY of the Modus products (best feeling shafts out there IMO), but the results don't lie. I have gone from around 50% greens hit to around 63%. SG against scratch has gone from losing 2 to 2.5 to even to gaining 0.5.

Modus 120 X/TX

med/med/stiff (X)

med+/med+/stiff (TX)

Works best for smooth to moderate transition, IMO.  TX does feel quite a bit more stout than X though.

Never used x100's but I just went from KBS Tour 130 X to PX 6.5. I love the project X's. Feel better to me and even though it's only a 5g difference, 125 feels just right and 130 felt heavy to me. Made me swing too hard

I think Modus 120’s are in their own category. I have tried modus120 in stiff and x-stiff, and currently game PX LZ 6.0’s. I can see how some would see them as similar, the 120’s feel quite a bit looser in the mid and def the butt section.

Had 120x in mizunos, thought it was the hardest shaft I’ve ever played to control.

Many years back I played DG S300 and then X100. Something wasn't right; I didn't know what. In 2003 I was introduced to a fitter that did work for Titleist and their tour pros. Long story short, he introduced me to 6.5, and I loved them. Played those for a few years before switching to PX 6.0 and played them until not long ago. Still have them in another set of irons; also have PX Red 6.0. IMO they are great shafts.

Not sure why but I've always hated X100s but I love PX 6.5 and have played them for years. I've since switched to MMT 125 TX but if I had to go back to steel, it would only be 6.5s. I'm not overly mechanical but I'm a feel player. I always felt like the X100s were work to swing, but the 6.5s almost swung themselves. It might be the few extra grams, but I kind of doubt 4-5g would make such a difference. The 6.5s always made irons feel softer for me at impact as well.
