Golf / range everyday.

Recommended Posts

Not a problem if you have specific things you're focusing on each session as you mentioned and aren't just pounding balls. Fastest route to most fixes or solidifying good sequencing is mirror, video, and/or limited motion work--repeated, deliberate takeaways, half and three-quarter shots, etc.--with some kind of checks in place to be able to categorize what you're doing as correct or incorrect on every rep. Some rest periods to evaluate and digest are essential for the noggin to take it all in. Can do a blend of that on the range each time out, so good there.

Fun also goes a long way. If being out there daily is good for your head and mood and you're enjoying yourself then that's a pretty big weight towards what you're doing working well for you, and enjoyment speeds learning and retention.

As long as it's not taking away from necessities and obligations elsewhere keep at it. Only other caveat would be to listen to yourself when you feel you need a break for a day or more to recharge, goes a long way towards keeping it progressing in the right direction and not ever feeling like a chore.

I'm a retired senior and pretty much do the same.  Practice hitting foam golf balls every day and get on the course three times a week. I'm up to one 18 hole round and two 9 hole rounds.

When I'm on the driving range I'll hit a few balls and then sit down to think about what I've done.  Setting up properly is important.

When I used to lift weights heavy, we had this principle called Maximum Recoverable Volume. Basically, how much exercise can you do before your body can't recover in a given amount of time. Golf practice is the same. Does the amount you're doing cause back pain, hand pain, wrist, shoulder, etc.?  If not, then it's not too much. There are on our televisions each week that play and practice golf for 6, 8, 10 hours a day 7 days a week for years. So as long as you're not in pain, it's not too much volume. Just make sure you have a plan. Some people say "practice makes perfect" but I say that's wrong. Perfect Practice makes Perfect...bad practice just makes you bad. Oh, also, "too much" can also depend on your social life and family life, but you didn't mention that so that's for you to decide.

MRV is a great point. The only thing I'll add is if OP is young, they can hit balls everyday and recover just fine. What I would caution is:

  • is there any improvement to show for it, versus hitting balls 3 days a week and practicing in other ways
  • how does OP know that just because they feel OK now, will they pay the price 10-20 years down the road?

I can say recovery in my mid-30's is not the same as it would be in my 20's. CAN I hit balls every day? Yes, and none of the fatigue would HURT, but there's nothing to gain from it. There's resistance training, mobility, technique work (doesn't require balls or the range), other sports that can all be done in lieu of the range.

You see it all the time with people in the gym. The first program they reach for is the 6 day PPL, instead of the 3-4 day plan.

Great you can have that golf regime, OP.  I know a couple of retired guys who do the same, except that they also play 9 holes daily and 18 on Saturday.  I don't know if they focus and work out like we should here at WRX, but they always seem to be having a great time; plus they are awesome to be around with.

First off. Lucky bast-ian  , of hope , you are.  🤣.  Most of us fondly remember the days of daily balls and 3 times a week play.

no. It’s not too much. Just always hit each ball with a goal.  Even if the goal is simply a slow motion move to perfect your backing for instance.  Don’t just rake balls and fire. That does NOTHING good.

As long as you're not just beating balls and are doing structured practice, that is pretty normal. Are you also dedicating as much time as you're doing full swing to distance wedges, chipping, and putting?

If you're hitting that many balls and playing that much you should probably focus your efforts towards more on-course practice.

I'd recommend dropping some of those "practice" sessions and doing more creative / challenging activities on the course:

- Play the red tees hitting 2 balls with irons-only to replace a range session beating balls.

- Play the red tees with all clubs & keep score for the purposes of making birdies & going low.

- Play your normal tees with irons-only to make it exceedingly difficult & work on long-irons.

- Play "miss 'em all" where you purposefully miss all the greens to work on short-game.

- Play the back tees to add some challenge.

- Hit 2 shots and play a worst-ball to see what you can shoot.

How long have you been following this practice regime? How many balls are you hitting every day?

Have you seen improvement while following this routine?

Been doing it since the snow melted up in Canada.  I’ve been scratch in my youth so trying to get to a lower single digit handicap has consumed me haha.

i actually have seen improvement, been taking a lesson or two along the way.  Also going to the range with a purpose is the biggest thing that I focus on.  I’m trying to clean up my tee ball so my short game gets little practice but I’ll get to that sometime soon.

I hit between 150 and 200 a day.

If you were scratch as a kid , and you have no disabilities now. Then it’s still in there. Be patient track stats. And then work on the deficiencies.  Try to stay off the internet and out of rabbit holes. Play some up tees and remind yourself how to score.
