Double Advice Rule Penalty?

Recommended Posts

I just want to verify this common situation.  By Rule we can neither seek nor give advice.  For a competitive round, suppose two friends are playing a match.  Both players are on the green and one player is unsure of his line.

"Is this putt straight or outside?"
"I think it is ball outside left."

So because the first player sought advice, and because the second answered and gave him advice, both are subject to penalties?  Two strokes to each in medal play and loss of hole for both players in match play?  So in medal play both players must hole out and add two, and in match play both players pick up their balls and move on to the next tee?

Seems like an easy question.  I just want to make sure.

In stroke (medal) play, you are correct.  In match play, the person who asked or provided advice first loses the hole (same as when both players in a match play a wrong ball, first one to have played the wrong ball loses the hole).

Absolutely this.

Guys I play with do this constantly during casual play. They ask which club was hit etc. It’s a really bad habit to get into if one plans to play competitively.

Darn, I was hoping I could close out my opponent.  If I am dormie and my opponent asks me an advice question and I answer, I assume we both lose the hole and I close him out.  Certainly if he asks me first he will lose the match, but I was hoping I could set a trap for him by asking him for advice during the hole and hopefully he will answer.

I'm pretty sure that's incorrect for match play. It's loss of hole, not loss of hole being played. You must complete the hole and adjust the match after the hole is completed. Most violations are adjustments after the conclusion of the hole and don't involve just picking the ball up and moving on. (An easy example of this is too many clubs, Player A hits first tee shot, realizes he has 15 clubs in the bag, yeets the club into the bushes, the hole is not over. The hole must be completed by both players. If player A wins, match is all square. If the hole is halved, Player B is 1 up. If Player B wins the hole, he is 2 up.)

No. That’s not true.

Too many clubs is a match adjustment penalty, loss of hole applies to the hole on which the infraction occurs.

If someone loses the hole due to penalty, the hole is over right then. Everyone can pick up and move onto the next hole.

Well, that's rich. You stumble into the Rules folder and tell rogolf he's wrong. You might stick to TikTok. 😉

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the skill set which a player must have to play competitive golf.

You actually have that entirely reversed from the truth. There is only one rule in the book that involves a match adjustment for a breach, Rule 4.1b.
