Grant Horvat not playing in the Barracuda

I know everyone here was excited to watch but it seems like Grant is declining his sponsors invite since he can’t bring a film crew to a pga tour event.

First I’ve heard of him potentially playing. But I’m not a YT golf guy. So not surprising. What is surprising is him seeming surprised he couldn’t do his YT “show” during a PGAT event!

I love the implication that maybe next year the tour will carve out an exception for him in their billion dollar tv rights deal!

Oh the irony of the PGA Tour wanting to ride GH YT coattails and then not allowing him to film any content for YT and vice versa.

PGAT was alive & well long before GH, and will b alive & well long after he’s forgotten.

I really don't get the appeal of the YT stuff. GH and the Bryant Bros. playing Portrush is a video over 90mins long, they don't have anything to offer to keep me engaged for that length of time - boring.

I like Grant but I really think this is a round about way of him saying I really do not want to compete. Building a YT channel like he has and then it turning into a sponsorship exemption is larger than anything I thought YT golf would amount to. I don’t see how you decline that.

I do recall watching one of them win at Hilton Head but shows you how out of touch with the YT golf I am. YT can work there is some really good content out there but overalll its saturated with endless amounts of pointless challenge matches and repetitive content.

I don't think he actually wanted to play. First of all, he knew this all along and kept hinting at it. Secondly, his good friends, the Bryan Bros, just did a very nice job of creating a few videos out of their sponsor invites to the BMW event on the DPWT, and that tour has basically the same rules as the PGAT. He could have easily made some compelling (to his audience) content out of this without violating the PGAT rules.

Comparing his play to a washed up (and suspended) PGAT winner on their major course series it’s pretty obvious to any non-biased person that he absolutely doesn’t have the game to compete on the KFT let alone the PGAT.

I like the No laying up youtube videos, but they're more about highlighting the course and less about the "personalities" of the golfers.

I'm a fan of grant and would like to see him play. That said he is delusional for thinking he deserve some special ability to record a YouTube circus during the tournament. That would be a huge disservice to his playing partners. I think he is scared to play it anyways, he has always mentioned the competitive tournament nerves made him lose love for the game.

 

also, with the amount of content he does with LIV guys, especially Phil (who I am a huge fan of but is also like the biggest PGA tour nemesis)   I am surprised they are still offering to work with him at all.

I think multiple things can be true at once. Grant is one of the most viewed content creators on YT in the golf space and sponsors want those eyeballs. That's the only reason he gets any attention at all from the PGAT and/or LIV. I can only presume, Grant would also want to stick to the space he knows best and has built a brand around. So, if he can't film content the way he wants to, why participate? He doesn't have anything to gain otherwise. 

 

Grant played in the BMW Charity Pro-Am on the KFT a few weeks ago and was allowed to film the experience shot-by-shot. Which can be seen on his YT page. He was also -6 under par through 12 holes on his own ball before crashing back down to reality. He may not be PGAT good, but he can golf his ball. It's not like he's one of us hacking it around.

 

In short, sponsors want Grant, the PGAT has stipulations, Grant doesn't agree to the stipulations, so he doesn't play. Not really complicated I don't think.

I understand why he's not doing it, but what rubs me the wrong way is in his videos in the past he's claimed multiple times "playing in a pga tour event is a dream of mine." Yet because you can't record it shot by shot you're not going to play? It's just an admission that you care more about your youtube channel than golf, which is fine just don't pretend otherwise.

Yeah seems like kind of a fake explanation tbh.

 

There must be a deeper story and a strategic decision not to play.

Because just not being able to film is not a sufficient reason.

 

Is he going to stop using the restroom also?

 

Just play, man. If this has always been a dream of yours. Nah, he's choosing to distance himself from the PGA Tour. maybe has to do with Wesley's ban also.

Admission that he cares about his business and livelihood more than golf itself? I think he falls in line with 99% of the population there.

I agree this feels like a strategic decision. He is the biggest name in a space that the tour is clearly trying to make its way into more. I think Grant (along with other large creators) is trying to chip away at some of the rules/regulations that limit creators.

NoLayingUp and The Fried Egg are the my favorite youtube golf channels. They don't bombard me with content and it's objectively good stuff highlighting cool golf courses and not just generic influencer stuff.  These personalities know the rules, it's pretty cut at this point and complaining about it won't do anything.

Complaining about it will absolutely do something. As the YT space grows the Tour is going to want in on that market share. We've already seen them lift previous restrictions when it comes to content creation and they even have a "Content Creator Council" now.
