Grant Horvat not playing in the Barracuda

I'm pretty sure his fans would have loved to still get good pre- and post-round content about the experience. And it's not like Tahoe is a bad place to show more off-course stuff anyway.

Exactly, this is just a cop out answer for Grant not wanting to do the tournament. He could easily make a compelling video about it without showing shots from competition. Or if he can't he's a really bad youtuber.

i think the issue is why have a crew film all your stuff then have them take the week off for the pga tour. and the pga tour now has its own studio company that also was like we want to edit the content to.

The tour has a multi-billion dollar media rights deal. Why would they want someone filming what is essentially an alternate broadcast

Because that single youtube video will do more viewership than the entire tournament. The whole reason for the exemption is to get eyes on a historically low-viewership event. Without Grant being able to film he has very little to gain for his business while the Tour has everything to gain. If I'm Grant, its a bad business decision and not a precedent I want to set for future collaborations.

So, I can assume all of you are watching the Good-Good s*** stuff on Golf Channel? 5-Clubs on Golf Channel? Matt Adams on Golf Channel?

NLU has talked openly on their podcasts about how Golf Channel and the Tour have reached out do put NLU content on their platforms. The catch - give up creative control. I wouldn't give up control of my product either. Bet on yourself!

Either way, consume content, don't consume content, does it really matter? All these entities are fighting over our eyeballs dollars anyway. They all seem to be doing just fine.

Anyway, I'm going to the golf course.

It's important to remember here that Horvat got that exemption because of his YT audience, which the PGA clearly wants a piece of (as they should). But there's little benefit to Horvat, his sponsors, or the PGA if he can't, you know, do the thing that put him in this position in the first place. While it likely is an issue with the PGA's broadcast deal, they now have something to work toward in the future.

Regardless of what the old guard here thinks, the PGA needs YT more that successful YT golfers need the PGA. Between his content, sponsorships, brand deals, and ownership in Takomo and Primo, this kid is rolling in it doing what he loves (and without having to grind it out on tour), and he's smart to wait for a deal that benefits both sides.

Let's break this down regarding that claim.

How would having to make a few episodes from pre and post-round discussion spliced with clips that no doubt the Tour would have let him use from their own reels or that he could extract himself under creative commons and the like have hurt his business and livelihood? He'd still have footage of him during play, and given that the Tour already does mic'd up segments and tries to get conversations between players and caddies I'm willing to bet they'd be happy to accommodate him being mic'd up the entire time. He might not have been able to have his normal "to the audience" conversations, but he could have gotten plenty to work with to share with them regardless. He claims being out on the Tour is his ultimate dream, yet because he can't have it happen exactly in the way he wishes he'd rather have no part of it. I fail to see how it's beneficial to his brand/business to turn down an opportunity many players strive for and never get when the whole draw is him being entertaining while working to be the best at golf he can be.

It's certainly not beneficial to his livelihood to turn down a potential pathway to the Tour, where he could get even more sponsor dollars than he has now. What he gets for the logos and brands now pales in comparison to what he could get representing those companies and more on mainstream TV in front of what is still one of the most sought after demos in entertainment. Being more directly involved with the Tour would also mean he'd likely get even more access to the other players, meaning more feature videos playing with them than his brand deals alone have brought, and pretty sure that would help boost his numbers even more.

He's afraid of the spotlight and using not being able to have his cameras there as an excuse or he's so arrogant he doesn't care about how having them there would affect his fellow players, or both, but none of this has a basis in any evaluation of how it would affect his business prospects.

This just shows a dramatic failure to understand the subject, at all.

From a business perspective he would see very little benefit from this. The tour essentially gave him a low ball offer because they know he would love to play a tour event.

Grant's betting on himself and the content creation space that holding out against the tour will provide more leverage in future negotiation. It's really not the hard to understand.

Regardless, fullswing is benefitting the tour as a whole. Grant's youtube doesn't

Full Swing also has the the rights to use tournament clips as fully negotiated between the lawyers with PGAT, NBC, and Netflix. The amount of actual tournament footage that Netflix uses is relatively minor compared to the overall content. Grant should get his lawyers to talk to PGAT and NBC if he wants to be able to broadcast (even if YT) footage from an event that has fully locked up footage rights.

Leverage to do what? To bring in a crew to film him on the course playing in a PGA tour event?

And then post the footage on his channel?

🤣

How does the tour benefit from that?

We see clearly that Bryson gets a lot of YouTube views but it doesn’t translate to 📺 ratings for his events.

100%

tv and YT are too different in both format and audience to really benefit from each other at this time

Do you really not understand how the Tour benefits from more viewership?

Take a guess at what happens to the TV deals when the sports viewership goes down. It's so simple that I would venture to say you will see these restrictions be lifted in the next 2-3 years. The only reason the tour isn't allowing it right now is the TV deal likely prohibits it and they couldn't come to an agreement.

1. Without Bryson LIV would have already been packed up

2. It's not about views for his events, its about views for the sport and specifically in this case the tour. Grant's ability to get people's eyes on Golf right now is extremely important to the tour wether you guys want to acknowledge it or not.

Tour viewership is the highest its been in years. And they've done it without youtubers.

they will have to work together constructively to find something that’s a benefit to both party’s.

but there’s no sports league on the planet that’s gonna let someone run around with their own camera crew and take game film for an entire event and then just go ahead and show it on their YouTube channel.

that would make no sense at all

I saw that the tour had some sort of creator golf tournament, where Grant got to play and show all the footage on his channel

The NBA hitched its saddle to Mac McClung so much, he won three straight NBA Dunk Contests without actually being on an NBA roster.

As soon as current TV contracts expire, leagues will get on board with alternative platforms. Gen Z is only getting older while us olds are only getting older. The way people consume content in the TikTok generation will change they way content is presented.

I’ve never had any interest in athletes “personality’s “

I just tune in for the action on the field! In a real event/game

Like I’m going to sit there watching these guys talking and joking around 🥱
