Tour viewership is the highest its been in years. And they've done it without youtubers.

Highest in years is laughable. This years masters was under 13m final day viewership - which would put it well below most of the last 25 years.

Sure its been going up a bit slightly over the last few years but to think that the content creation space hasn't carried that water is ridiculous.

The NBA hitched its saddle to Mac McClung so much, he won three straight NBA Dunk Contests without actually being on an NBA roster.

As soon as current TV contracts expire, leagues will get on board with alternative platforms. Gen Z is only getting older while us olds are only getting older. The way people consume content in the TikTok generation will change they way content is presented.

How will the tik tok generation watch a golf major?

They won’t actually watch the event on 📺 or on a streaming platform?

Youre talking about marketing and promotion.

Not viewing events.

I’ve never had any interest in athletes “personality’s “

I just tune in for the action on the field! In a real event/game

Like I’m going to sit there watching these guys talking and joking around 🥱

the great thing about youtube is you dont have to sit and watch every bit of the video no one is stopping you from jumping to a part of the video you find more interesting. in your case that would be whenever they insert the havaday hard seltzer commercial ;}

I have no interest in watching dudes laughing and cavorting around

Now this is good YouTube content..

Which is why its laughable - viewership of the sport has been so bad that a 7 year high would put it at a less average day 20 years ago.

Yeah, you are right. It is not the viewership golf had in the Tiger era or the 2010s. And YouTube is a good way to connect to a new generation. But, content in the 2010s was WAYYYYY more limited. Streaming had just started and was limited. You are now competing with every source of entertainment vs only other cable channels.

It feels like a very pointed comment.  Knowing his current loyalty to the Bryan Bros and Phil,  it seems more like a call out of the PGA tour.

He is making money hand over fist.  Not being able to monetize 2 days seems like a lame excuse.

Sure but that exactly proves why its going to be important for the tour to find new ways to grow. They need to find a way to cater to the next generation and wether the olds like it or not, youtube and short form content is the answer.

It's ironic though because LIV won't let you film a tournament either. It all just comes down to TV rights.

It's certainly TV rights - but Grant is taking the stance that if they want in on the youtube creator space, they need to change the way tv deals are made going forward. Which they will.

He's not taking a stance of any kind - he's being a weenie and taking a convenient way out to get some more clicks and not admit he doesn't want to play, which would absolutely benefit him.

It's no surprise to him he can't film nor should he be able to - nothing to do with any "deal", lol.

The PGAT cannot and will not let anyone use footage of their tournaments. Unless a fee is paid.

The PGAT has a long-term agreement with CBS, NBC, ESPN, and Golf Channel, which extends through 2030.

These Networks have exclusive rights. The Tour will not violate that agreement for a small time YouTube channel. That's insane.

Bingo. Grant has been wishy washy about playing the entire time. He brought it up to Scottie who told him he should absolutely play and his response was "I don't know we'll see." The media thing is just an excuse to get out of something he doesn't want to do.

And stay tuned ….. maybe taking a little shot at the PGAT fits in with some future plans.

Phil's in Grant's ear, Phil told him not to play without his crew/monetization, LIV will let him do it at some mickey mouse event and Phill will claim it as some massive W over the oppressive PGA tour.

Yawn

He was allowed to film the pro-am in San Diego, but just himself, no footage of any pro's hitting any shots.....pga rules

I think he played with Jason Day who offered course strategy and tips which was nice to watch

it seemed like a good compromise.

Play but no pro footage 🤷‍♂️

Geez, the entitlement is strong with this one.  “Mommmmmmmm!  They won’t let me film my video!!!  Then. I’m. Not. Playing!”

What a tool.  He gets a sponsor’s invite that he 100% doesn’t deserve and then expects to be able to set the terms so he can monetize said exemption?  That’s beyond delusional and narcissistic.

Translation.  If the only thing for me is a golf competition, I’m not going to play.  Because I know I’m gonna get smoked and look bad.

From a business perspective he would see very little benefit from this. The tour essentially gave him a low ball offer because they know he would love to play a tour event.

Grant's betting on himself and the content creation space that holding out against the tour will provide more leverage in future negotiation. It's really not the hard to understand.

🤣  You think there’s gonna be a ‘future negotiation’ with Horvat about video rights?  Those things the PGAT sells for billions of dollars and which provides their largest source of revenue?  You think they’re going to feel pressure to negotiate with some YT dude that probably doesn’t even pull $1 million a year directly from his videos?  I’m gonna go with no on that.

Big difference between pro am and actual tournament.  Anyway rules are rules and would be surprised if fellow competitors want the distraction of him filming himself and so forth, but no need for a compromise because there was never any real dispute - he just wants to play the victim.
