Rules are rules, should have just said he is giving the invite to some other player of his choosing, could've been a bigger story.  
Now my question, hypothetically I win 100s of millions and want to stage a 4 men tournament for let's say 5 million and broadcast it on YouTube and want to invite Rory Scottie Bryson Xander, will PGA allow them to participate?

LOL! .........The most popular video on YouTube in 2024 was "Baby shark Dance" with over 15 billion views. I don't think that helped shark conservation one bit.

The PGAT has a long-term agreement with CBS, NBC, ESPN, and Golf Channel, which extends through 2030.

 

These Networks have exclusive rights. The Tour will not violate that agreement for a small time YouTube channel. That's insane.

It's crazy how influencers like Grant think the tour will prioritize their content over a  $680M/year deal with ESPN, NBC/Golf Channel and CBS. What's even more mind-boggling is people like Wesley Bryan a former tour member can't grasp how media rights work.

The pga tour will be fine without grant

 

grant will be fine without the pga tour.

 

To give up your media rights (pga tour) to a creator to film their own content ….there has to be something in it for them…. I’m sure people smarter than us have looked at this and don’t think the Horvat demographic that currently doesn’t watch the pga tour events aren’t really going to be revenue generators for the tour events after a Horvat collab.  It’s likely a lopsided deal and benefits grant more than the tour.

TLDR,   Waited until tournament week to withdraw……why….more clicks and money.  He should’ve withdrawn or not accepted a long time ago, when he figured out he couldn’t bring his film crew.   Now that he waited so long the tournament can’t give an exemption to a deserving non tour member/celebrity to promote their tournament. The spot goes to the first alternate, which is fine, however the purpose of sponsors exemptions is for the sponsor to invite someone.  
 

Broadcast rights were sold a long time ago to whoever is showing this one, Golf Channel I assume.   Can’t have someone else broadcasting part of the tournament on YT.  
 

Horvat is only promoting himself, which is his “dream”.

agreed Grant seems like a nice guy but he is annoying.

 

i wouldn’t watch if not for the other people on the video.

 

But every video he has someone interesting (Phil, Rahm, sheffler, Wesley Bryant, etc) so he’s doing something right.

No, they won’t.  Go do some research on how much those YouTube channels make and then compare it to how much the major broadcast networks make in advertising during a PGATour broadcast.  Hint, one is pennies and the other is thousand dollar bills.

 

Again, I don’t think most people realize how little money is actually made by these YouTubers off the video itself.  It’s peanuts.

The player doesn’t have the right to give the sponsor’s exemption to someone else.  If he doesn’t take it, it goes back to the sponsor to give to someone else of their choosing.

Interesting, but they probably could’ve worked out a deal behind closed doors and just announce it live. Would make a better story that’s all.

I don't begrudge anyone who watches YouTube golf, good for you, enjoy.

 

But to me, YouTube golf is nonsense and worthless. I prefer championship golf.

But the shelf life is limited. How many wacky variations of 'Grant playing golf' will entertain people?

 

Look at it this way: If a network like CBS or NBC elected to show a Grant YT video for 10 or 15 min during Sat or Sun coverage....people would go apeshytt. And not in a good way.  YT views are not indicative of what some people think they are indicative of.

A lot of comments here from folks who are not familiar with Grant’s content.  His ‘persona” is not arrogant in the least, nor is he delusional about his playing ability.  He is a solid AM and has played with enough tour players to know how big the gap for is for him.  Also, I don’t think embarrassment is a big concern of his.
