I230 vs Blueprint S Forgiveness??

Yaboyvmac

Recommended Posts

I have recently purchased a set of Ping i230 for my second bag and they seem great so far but I am missing out on the forged feeling and I can’t help but think they are a bit large as well.

I’ve read many times the blueprint s is very similar in forgiveness and have an awesome feel to them.  For context, I also have a set of zx7 and played MP 223s last year.  I tried the 23’ T100’s and thought they were way to firm and clicky in a sense which hust didn’t add to my experience. But man were they a beautiful iron to look down at.

How much forgiveness am I really giving up if I were to make that switch, or is the club hoe in me never going to be satisfied. Am I dumb for wanting a prettier smaller iron at the sake of hurting my performance?

I’ve played the i230s for a couple years and demoed the Blueprint S irons extensively because I LOVE the way they look. To be honest, I found the difference in forgiveness to be fairly significant. I can play the i230s without any trouble but would be stretching to play the Blueprint S.

I haven't played the i230's, but I did hit them during my fitting and I personally didn't get along with them as well as the Blueprint S irons (most likely due to the wider sole). That being said, I think the BPS irons are extremely forgiving for their size, and coming from Titleist T100/620CB, the added forgiveness is definitely noticeable.

Only way to find out is to just pull the trigger on a set and see if it fits your game 🙂

I have played these two sets for at least half a season each in the past and I will say that in terms of forgiveness i230 > BPS.  I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to come to that conclusion lol.  i think the more interesting trade off happens if you consider other factors like handicap, feel/looks, turf interaction, etc because I def enjoyed playing the BPS more than the i230s.   I think for the elite ams and scratch-ish handicap golfers, where the swings are much more consistent, it is the BPS all day every day bc i dont think giving up the feel and turf interaction of the BPS is worth the amount of forgiveness they would gain playing the i230, bc they dont need it.

My overall scores and stats with the BPS were a little worse than when I was playing with the i230s.  So for me as a 6 hdcp that is currently more focused on shooting lower scores, i230 over the BPS.  But if one day I don't care about the scoring as much and want to play with some that feels and looks great, while not giving up too much forgiveness, then BPS.

Did you ever run a combo set of the two? I have both and I am thinking 4-6 i230 and 7-Pw BPS.

I did BPS in the 7-PW and 5/6 in the i230.  I could never adjust to the 230. I've always played a narrow sole iron and struggled with the bounce and sole width of the 230. I ended up taking my old s55's and putting them in the bag for the 5/6 irons. Its made a ton of difference for me.

I thought about going back and ordering the BPS for the 5/6 just for consistency, but I really only have another season left in these irons before I move on to something else. In reality, its probably less than one season left.

For a few of rounds I combo'd them: 4-5 i230 and then 6-PW BPS.  I didn't really love it honestly.  I felt the transition between the i230/BPS wasn't as smooth as I thought it would be.  Eventually, I went just 4 i230, and the rest 5-PW BPS  and felt that was the sweet spot for me bc I was using the 4 iron more as a tee option than anything else.  I think it came down to the fact that feels of each model were so different from each other, that I couldn't reconcile the transition between them on course when using it as a combo set.

I have the Ping I230 5-8 then Blueprint S in 9,PW then S159 wedges.  The way I set the bag up is the 9 and pw are wedges I'm my mind that help transition to the S159's from the I230's.  Love the setup

Blueprint S is one of the most forgiving irons I have ever played.  Unfortunately, I do not have experience with the I230.  The blue print S is somewhat more forgiving that the TCB, S55 (in the 4 and 5 iron), J40 CB and 716 CBs.  Those are basically the Player’s CB’s I have played over the last decade & change.

The Stock Blueprint S is also the strongest lofted iron I have ever bagged with a 45 degree PW and a 33 degree 7 iron.  Most of the others I played in recent years had 46 or 47 degree PW and 34 or 35 degree 7 irons.  So the BPS is slightly longer also.  Spin, Launch, control, feel and turf interaction are all sublime.

I felt like the blueprints were more forgiving.  When I was off, the apex pros didn't provide much forgiveness. They felt great but just required a little more out of me.

I went to some S55s after the apex pros and rode those into the ground, found another set of near new S55s after the first set was dead, then got the Blueprint S.  The blueprint may be a little less forgiving then the S55s but not by much.

thank you for your response. In this case I should stop considering the idea of ordering the APEX CBs then...

I'll never tell an adult how to spend their money. I spec'd out some Titleist 680s a couple weeks ago and the Rors TM blades when those were out.  It's ok to have fun.

I honestly think the i230s are some of the most consistent, forgiving and easy to hit irons out there. Them and the G440 Max driver have definitely raised the floor of my game on bad days. &nbsp

the BPS are very forgiving for what they are, and feel fantastic, but it’s not apples to apples. Especially in the long irons

I feel the same. I do think it depends on your miss and how far off the center it is. I spent over a year trying to somehow get the BPS into my bag, but for someone who misses fat occasionally and off the toe sometimes the I230 is way better.

Just my two cents, but if you are concerned about feel I don't think Ping in any club is likely to be the silver bullet. Suggest looking at a mizuno (some good forgiving models available).

Thanks for all the replies, I’ll probably bite the bullet on the right deal or hopefully some one wants to trade to go to i230.

im honestly not sure if anything will kick the zx5/zx7 combo.  I think they feel better than my 223s did.

I don’t necessarily care about my score as much as having a good time, but I can’t look bad at the work outings.

If anyone is interested in a trade I have 4-u x100 black dot 😅
