Another Player/ Caddie Split: Geno and Joel

Kinda wild to see this one. Reminds me of the Homa/Griner split. Don ruin the friendship for the work, especially if the results aren’t there. 
 

Wonder if Morikawa will give Geno a shot in the playoffs?

I think Geno and Max would be a great pairing.

 

Actually, Griner might be good for Joel as well. I've always thought Joel needs someone to kick him in the a** from time to time.

I saw the title and have no idea who these guys are, lol.  Too bad Chuck Woolery passed away, he'd have these guys sorted in 2 and 2.

Maybe they're splitting up professionally to save their friendship? I know they've always been very close, but Joel's results have fallen off quite a bit recently and maybe he needs to hear a different voice. 

Joel seems to suffer from more self-doubt than a lot of guys out there. I detect a hint of imposter syndrome maybe where he looks around at all the guys he's playing against and maybe doesn't feel like he deserves to be there. Who knows? 

If Geno wants to keep working out there I don't think he'll struggle to find another bag to carry.

Still not sure how a caddie is responsible for a tour player playing good or bad and how changing caddies will improve their game.  They carry the bag, give the yardages, clean the balls and clubs, and tend the pin.  It's the player who hits the shot.

Caddy is the psychologist, coach, distractor, friend and sounding board all in one.

How much the player uses the caddy depends on the players trust in the caddy for their history, knowledge of the game and the players tendencies, strengths/ weaknesses and course management.

Its a fragile and complex relationship as most are/were connected well before players career as friends, sibling, relative, spouse, parent and/or coach.

Maybe 30 or 40 years ago. Been trending for the norm to be what we have now at least since Tiger's emergence. Besides helping the players keep a reign on their emotion and attitude they do carry a lot of weight besides the bag because of all the info available on what can make or break good rounds. Lot to keep up with from nutrition, to current tendencies, to layout info, to having someone to keep an eye on other player's scores, the cut line, and so on, and known if and when to inform their player. Nice to have another set of eyes who can watch what the wind is doing on key holes as you make your way around while fully able to concentrate on the hole at hand. 

 

Clearly a reason you don't see many in the winner's circle getting it done alone; way too much for one person to shoulder and still play their best golf, and way too much of an advantage not to avail yourself of.

Maybe I'm nuts, but actually wouldn't be surprised to see them get back together.  Obviously depends on if Geno picks up a bag here for the homestretch.  He's played worse since the split...

Curious to see what is going on with Tony Finau & his caddie Mark Urbanek, who hasn't been on the bag for the last 2 weeks.

It shows a weak players mind.  You’re correct.  It won’t matter. But they need to blame anyone but self.  
 

I agree a good caddie will make you much better. But I fail to see how a long time caddie makes anyone worse.

Agreed, but I think that was just a narrative from Full Swing. They followed him around for months/a year and could probably put together what amounts to ~20 minutes of him having self doubt, which makes it look like that's how he always walks around. I mean, he's on tour, he may have self doubt at times, but I think all these guys have low and high points.

Thanks, Mark grew up playing the course where I work as a starter on weekends in New Jersey, a really good player in his own right.
