Why don't Srixon metals get more love?

Recommended Posts

Recently was able to get a deal with Srixon.

I have to say after having the metals for a couple weeks now. I truly don't understand why they don't get more love. The ZXi stock driver, not even the LS, is the unicorn driver I've been searching for and I got it with almost no intention of playing it. It is the longest driver I've ever used and God knows I've used a TON (Gt3,Qi35,Ai Smoke..etc.). I'm just curious as to why? I know the irons and wedges are beyond excellent and that's not really a secret. Is it just that Srixon doesn't have the marketing $$ to compete in the metal market??

I think bigger gear junkies know that their fairways and hybrids are really solid. The drivers just started picking up in terms of quality.

They probably need to catch the same luck as Cobra in reviews showing how they perform against the big guys for a lower price. If they could be neck and neck or beat out a few might see more people buying them.

But you walk into a golf shop and where are the Srixon woods? Usually past 5 or 6 other brands.

The zx5 and 7 did very well when TXG was doing their driver bracket shootout. The ZX5 MKII LS was especially good and may have won that year IIRC? I'd think those vids gave Srixon some legit street cred. One thing I did notice is that the heads seem quite loud compared to a lot of other manufacturers. That can be off putting for a lot of players.

A buddy of mine has been sponsored by Srixon for something like 20 years. He turned me on to Srixon over a decade ago. I’m a lefty so I had to wait on the 765s since the 745s weren’t available left handed.

i had the opportunity to play with his son who is left handed this past week. He had a Srixon driver and 5 wood. The 5 wood was simple and looked great. It also felt great when I hit it on a short par 4. I liked the simplicity it. Nothing to adjust. Just aim and swing.

He had his driver set up the complete opposite of how I would play it. High loft with draw face. So it didn’t work out as well for me. I may pick up a fairway wood to tinker with it a bit since used ones are cheap.

But for me being left handed, the reason they got no love is because I could never find a demo one that’s lh to hit.

You got it. Srixon drivers have tended to be loud. The last few generations were noticeably loud. They are all titanium, so they don’t sound like carbon heads. Interesting that Srixon says carbon crown drivers don’t necessarily save weight to be moved around because of the weight of the epoxy needed to glue the carbon in place.

Looks like Srixon has addressed the sound. The newest ZXi driver is a few decibels quieter and is getting nice reviews. It also is a step up in looks IMO. The LS head is supposed to be one of the most forgiving low-spin drivers.

Srixon metals perform well, but they tend to sound louder than most, which kind of tends to throw some people off with all the carbon sounding clubs in now a days.

If you put them on a launch monitor, you probably wouldn't notice a difference on them, but look and sound is a huge thing and they haven't figured that out yet on the retail* side.

It's the same argument as the other lesser known brands where Wilson/Mizuno/Srixon (and to some extent, Cobra) struggle to get traction in woods. I would say for someone to want to try one of those brands, you'd either have to be swayed by price (at which point, they might also just be thinking of a used big brand driver) or you have to think that one of those brands will out perform TaylorMade/Callaway/Titleist/Ping. And with current clubs, there really isn't that much room for other clubs to be better than those companies, maybe a better fit at best. Personally, if I know one of those big brands work (and at the worst, be as good as those other smaller brands), why should I waste my time with these other woods?

Again, not saying that these companies make woods that are any worse than the big names, but I definitely don't think they are better either. So for me, I'm not very interested in trying smaller brands knowing that the performance gains are either non-existent or marginal at best.

There are multiple facets to this in my opinion. The obvious one is tour usage/visability. Vs mizuno or Wilson, they do have more usage. They may even have more usage than Cobra. If they can continue the trend with more players/wins, it will only help.

As far as performance goes…. There isnt much in it in ANY of the of the OEMs when it comes to center faced contact and distance. The ever

so slight gains one might see over another is spin consistency with mishits. Thats where I think maybe some of the smaller brands are slightly lacking.

The last factor is resale. They just dont hold value at all. For the portion of gear junkies who just buy stuff on a whim and not really get fitted, this is definitely a factor.

Just like for Mizuno and Wilson, a lot of fans notice that most of those companies’ staff players are playing WOODS made by Taylormade and Callaway.  It doesn’t bode well if that even w all the customization available to their pros, they still choose to play another company’s driver and/or fairway woods. This is not to say that these 3 companies’ woods might not b best fit for some amateurs, just the reason a lot don’t even try them.

Came here to post this.

Ping, TaylorMade, Titleist, Callaway and to a somewhat lesser degree Cobra seem to get all the attention when it comes to drivers and FW metals. Companies like Mizuno and Srixon fly under the radar being overshadowed by the above.

The good news is that brands like Mizuno and Srixon can represent a really good deal, especially in the used market or as new models come out. I got a STZ-220 driver head for a steal as a result.

Obvious omission, you see a lot of Ping drivers under head covers who aren't  Callaway and TM players.

Driver market is tough!  I believe Johnny Wunder had some really good insight on one of his podcasts lately discussing this.  A really big point he made was the amount of money the top 5 OEM’s are willing to spend just on the driver R&D and marketing process.  They leave no stone unturned and basically have a blank check.

Outside of that.  I think the spot where Srixon gets overlooked the most, especially with the zxi release, is the fairway woods.  These zxi fairways look incredible and perform even better.  Simply fantastic!

When you go into the PGA store you see 5-8 total Srixon drivers and fairway woods. TM, Callaway, Ping you see 50 drivers and 100 fairways in different configs. Even Titleist will have 20 drivers and 80 fairways. Last time I was in No LS 2 3 woods and a 5 wood to go with the 4 drivers.

Amen to this comment.  My local PGASS has none of the current Srixon woods or drivers.   Hard to check out a product you have no access to.

Not sure about drivers but I took a chance on a ZX Mkii 3+ fairway wood at an end of line sale and it's easily the best 3 wood I've ever had.

My BRNR Mini driver was too one dimensional for my liking so I decided I would be better off with a strong 3W.

Did some research and read that this club is meant to be a cannon so I decided to give it a try since the price was so good.

It is an absolute cannon, I only hit ot off the deck even when on the tee and it just goes forever! I hit my best ever 3 wood shot, maybe even fw shot, ever with it and it just continues to impress me. Nowadays I only use driver on holes where I know the additional distance is worth the reduced level of accuracy.

Definitely one of the best chances I've taken, I'm sure it'll stay in the bag for a long time.

Very underrated. That TXG test last year really highlighted how good they were, very impressed.

Srixon is quality top to bottom. For consumers of my ilk, who like to buy/sell a lot of clubs (esp. drivers and fairways) the resale value of Srixon gear is considerably less than that of other more mainstream companies. Wilson make great products as well, but when you go to sell used Wilson gear...you're almost giving it away relative to Titeist or Ping products on resale. For some consumers, that may be an issue and may explain why Srixon and Wilson are not more popular, especially in the driver/fairway categories. But if you're buying and plan to hold on for 2, 3, 4 years, (the anti-golfwrx'er:) no reason not to buy Srixon. Everything I've played from Srixon has been excellent, and I still play a 565/965 combo set. Their utility irons are some of the best in the business.
