Srixon ZXi7 and ZXi5 Build with KBS TGI 60 Regular

Recommended Posts

Over a month ago, I started a topic that received great responses and very useful information regarding the swingweight effect of building Srixon ZXi irons with 85 MMT.  FFWd 6 weeks......  After investing in two independent fitting sessions, one indoor and one outdoors, both using Trackman, I've come to accept my age as being "up there" as the data and visual ball flights overwhelmingly recommended that I use a 60-65g graphite shaft, not the MMT 85R or SteelFiber 80, which were also part of the fitting session. As much as I would like to use the MMT 85R it just was not a good fit and slightly better vs. the SF80CW.

Now I'm in uncharted territory looking at 60G shafts.  I'm "up there" in golf years.   One recommendation is a LA Golf A series and the other is a KBS TGI 60, both regular.  I figure the TGI makes more sense since Srixon doesn't uplift and the LA Golf is an aftermarket custom option with a $100 uplift.  Another recommendation is the Mitsubishi Tensei Blue 60 K series, but these may be discontinued?

Whatever 60-65g shaft I choose, my concern is the possible need for "adding" weight somewhere to achieve my desired D2 to D3 swingweight.  Well, the fitter puts the ZXi5 clubhead on the TGI60 shaft (who knows what the swingweight is......)  and the results were pretty darn good (ideal and even the fitters said that I'm well above average for golfers my age) and, I should be greatful that there are equipment options available that allow an older guy to keep playing good golf, and care less about the swingweight?

In summary, I would appreciate hearing from those that have built these Srixons with 60-65g shafts and if there was significant manipulation needed and/or it's a tough build given the lightweight shaft.  I wish not to have a Frankenstein end product.   Srixon lists C9 as the swingweight for ZXi5s with graphite shafts but I have measured other's with Srixon factory builds using SF80CW and even the Japan only Diamana 70, both are D2.

Thanks for the replies.

The tgi 60 is a super shaft not too flexible at all.can be trimmed to various sub flexes .

I dont know the weight needed but I would think 6 to 8g .

Properly built i think one of the best combos around for" our" age group

Thank you for the insight.

If the shaft didn't say 60 on it, I would've thought it was 75g.  For a 60g shaft, it felt pretty solid.  My preconceived thought is that a shaft that is only 60g, the walls would be thinner and over all feeling is "hollow".  Not the case.

I would appreciate hearing from others that know whether or not Srixon will sort for heavier club heads to use with the lighter shafts.

Any thoughts on how to ensure the combination is "properly built"?  It's a matter of trust, I surmise.

Ive built a few sets with TGI’s

One set with the 100’s and one set with the 110’s which I played. Swingweighting was easy with both, I did weight sort shafts before I started building which limited the amount of tip weighting I had to do.

The heavier shafts would cause less problems though.40to 50 g difference which is about 5 swingweights

I've accepted several independent fittings and will decide between KBS TGI60 and Mitsubishi MMT 65R.  85R MMT produced results worthy of purchase, except it was alot easier (and fun) to hit with the 65R....  Reminded me of how I used to swing a golf club 15 years ago.

The TGI60 with the ZXi5 clubhead has a swingweight of C9 (clubhead afixed to shaft using the screw-in apparatus) C9 matches the Srixon swing weight chart on their website.  I'm fine with the C9 as I hit this set up well.

MMT 65R was only available on a TM790.  The swingweight was D1  My overall results were much better with the 85MMT on ZXi5, so I attribute the difference to the clubhead.

The MMT 85R with ZXi5 clubhead has a swingweight of D5.  Yes, my results were fine, but the configuration was noticeably heavy and not much fun to hit with.

The fitter felt that the organic swingweight MMT 65R on ZXi5 would be same as MMT 85R (D5).  Purely speculation, but logicial.

I understand the balance point on MMTs to be lower towards the tip, but how does an 85g or even 65g shaft produce an organic D5 swingweight?  The TGI60 on the ZXi5 is C9 using the detachable aparatus.

I thought lighter shaft would lead to a lighter swingweight?

** grips were Lamkin 50g.  "Organic" is my own definition of a swingweight achieved without tip weights and using only using the attachment mechanism.

My understanding is in order to reduce swingweight by 1 point, add 5g in grip.  May also shorten shaft length 1/2" to reduce by 3 points.  Does this mean that Srixon ZXi5 and MMTs are not a good combination to build with?

Thoughts, anyone?

I have the ZX5 MKII irons and have th TGI 60 in the 5 and 7 irons. I was actually fit for them during a Srixon Demo Day for the ZXi5/7 irons and wanted to try them after a bout with tennis elbow. I was surprised at how well the 60 orbs for me, turned 70 in July, I built them to D1. My main concern that they would be too light and loose control but hit a surprising 5 iron this weekend, 7 i on into a green as well. I ordered a Recoil Dart 65 to try before I commit to the TGI. 🏌🏻

I wish to extend much appreciation to Srixon, Mitsubishi, and KBS for providing the information I needed to make a very informed decision.  It certainly helps to be an educated consumer to be able to ask the right questions.  Many topics on this forum helped me quickly get up to speed.  It took time to mine through the topics.

Kind regards.
