x100 iron shafts into wedges or s400 in wedges

Recommended Posts

I am custom ordering an iron set with DG TI x100 shafts. my wedges go as such, GW 50, SW 56, LW 60. im definitely putting x100's in my GW, but not sure if I should go all the way through the wedges.

I use my GW 90% of the time for full shots or 3/4 knockdown shots. my SW and LW I use both of those for bunker play depending on conditions and length of bunker shot as well as height of the bunker I need to get out of. both get used for green side finesse shots depending on conditions and lie. Both SW and LW are also used for 3/4 shots into greens depending on pin placement whether its a tight pin tucked over a bunker or a back pin where I need a one hop stopper type of shot.

I use all of my wedges for "fuller" shots but also need the feel around the greens as they are all versatile in their own way. so im not sure if I should match the progression of x100 all the way through for that same feel of shaft.

as of right now I have it marked up to be x100 down to GW and S400 in SW/LW with the thought that if I dont like the different feel of the S400 I can always reshaft into x100.

I will also note a problem I have in this decision is I have never played anything but a stock s200 shaft in wedges which I have come to realize is way too soft for me. so in comparison to what ive always played off the shelf I do think either the S400 or x100 is going to be a noticeable upgrade and will make a world of a difference for my wedges.

but if anything I have explained here helps someone educate me on which shaft (s400/x100) would likely be the best to go with in wedges or if my idea of the s400 in SW/LW is a good idea please share your knowledge and any information to add. this is my first time with a true custom set and I want to make the correct choices

cheers!!

EDIT: I also have for the first time decided to go with GW-LW the same length at 35.5 for consistency and am quite nervous about that change. although my idea is worst case scenario I just cut down my SW and LW to standard length if need be. but if anyone can share experience on same length GW-LW for the first time that would be helpful for perspective thanks!!

I dont think there's a correct answer, because wedge shaft choice is quite personal.  The choice of X100 in the GW, and S400 in the SW/LW is quite a popular combo on tour, so great starting point.  Another option would be to soft step the X100 in either all the wedge or just the SW/LW spots, you will lose a little static weight, but I think still perfectly usable.

I currently play the X100 softstepped in my irons and S400 in my wedges.  I'm finding that I don't like the extra weight of the S400 in my wedges for greenside shots, I actually prefer either a matching shaft to my irons or just something else completely like KBS Tour 120.

interesting. since I have no experience with anything other than s200 wedge shaft which is like a noodle to me. since thats the case im conflicted as I have no other experience to go off of. maybe ill match my GW to my irons and with SW LW s400. maybe the extra weight will compensate for flex and give me better touch on feel shots. I have a tendency with heavy headed wedges to loose touch so maybe the added weight in the shaft will help in that are. and if I find the opposite is true well then its not the end of the world to re shaft 2 wedges

Are you more of a feel player with wedges in hand?  If so, then a tad softer S400 is better. Then again, if feel is not an issue, go with the same shafts in the rest of the set.

I think for the sake of me never having anything in my wedges other then s200, im going to go with dg s400 in all three wedges after PW so GW-LW will be s400. I can always change shafts if I need to thats not so big of a deal. and no im not scottie scheffler but he plays s400 shafts from GW-LW and plenty of others as well so well test it out coming from a s200 wedge shaft I think anything will be an improvement lol.

now the question ive been debating for a while of swing weight is there. always played a constant SW 4i-pw and my other wedges have been maybe a point heigher. I like a consistent feel through set so im not the biggest fan of the idea of MOI matching. ive never tested it but also just think a consistent feel through the irons seems more important to me I dont know. all of these spec talks about new builds really stress me out as there are so many options and some of those options like swing weight and moi matching are Kinda opposites of each other and without testing its hard for me to make a decision

I've never even considered MOI matching, suppose old school is a perk. LOL  Best to get a club set to your thoughts, take some lead tape and hit the range, add and subtract to see what feels good. Make the task fun.

Swing weight is personal, for me it's all about feeling the club at the top of my swing.  Ten years back my 2i-9i were D3, PW D5 and Gap D7 and LW E0.  Today, 2i - D3, 3i-9i-D2&D1, PW-D3, 52-D5 and 58-D6.
